If anyone would like to take a look at the new website I am starting and tell me what you think about it, you can look here:

http://www.clieuk.co.uk/MI/cliequeen/index.htm

It has some free Think DB's.

I am very new to the website thing and would like to know how you guys see this one:)

FYI this is NOT a replacement for ClieSource or CliePlanet, just something I'm doing to try to help out a bit:)

I made some databases of my own : DVD list, CD list, bank account, Star Trek CCG list for 1st and 2nd edition.

I used first ThinkDB and did the update with Smartlist. Real nice products.

I haven't changed to SmartList yet, but I thought people would get the hint.

Just as a reminder to all: ThinkDB has updated it's program and name to SmartList To Go, but the DB's should work with both still:)

I can confirm that the update works fine and I can use my previous ThinkDB with Smartlist.
Once you update with Smartlist (for free), ThinkDB disappear.

Ditto. And the tinybytes store/retrieve just fine from the MagicStick, but alas, don't run from there. Am told this is an inherent problem that all PDA databases experience. Anyone know if this is true, or if there's a way to have a tinybyte (or whatever they call them now...smartalecs? dunno..) run from MS?

Cheers

Really easy with Smartlist.
You define the default directory where you want to store your DB on the MS (list on the upper right corner, then 'Default Direct...').
After, your select your DB (with the dropdown list), then ''Move.
It will be transfered on the MS.

Can TinyBytes created with SmartList be used with the ThinkDB program. ie are they retrocompatible?

There's no way back.
Once you use Smartlist, ThinkDB disappears.
But I'll try to beam one Smartlist DB to my Visor with ThinkDB.
I'll tell if it works.

I'd appreciate that information very much Draak!

Oh yeah, it's easy to move the dbs back and forth from within SmartList, but where it isn't easy is wanting to access the several dbs I do in a day that reside on the MS. Waiting for them to copy to RAM first before being usable is a pain (they are all large, a few are close to 1 mb in size). So I end up leaving them in Ram, and all told they take about 3.5mb. Would be *much* better if they simply ran from Ram *or* SmartList could reside on MS and run from there, but it doesn't, and you have to manually move any db you use back and forth.

gvtexas,

The option to run dbs off of the MS is a feature that I've requested from the developer more than once. It works with WordSmith documents, so I know it's possible.

After playing around for a little while, here's a workaround I found. I use Launcher X, but it should work in any launcher.

1) Using LX info gadget or FileZ, select the "launchable" bit for the TinyByte you want to move to the card.

2) Move the TinyByte to the card. Put it in the palm/launcher directory unless you're using LX. In that case, you can put it in any directory as long as you have it specified in LX prefs.

3) Your TinyByte should now show up as an icon in your launcher. If it doesn't, you may need to refresh icons. Tapping on the icon should launch the TinyByte directly and any changes are saved back to your card.

The only "problem" I've discovered is that the TinyBytes no longer show up in the SmartList program if you leave it and then come back. You can still launch them from the launcher, but not from SmartList itself. Not a big deal to me. It also makes a copy on the card for some reason.

Many free smartlists can be found on dataviz's website at:

SmartLists (http://www.dataviz.com/products/smartlisttogo/sltg_samples.html)

Thanks, Mike. Will try your technique.

I've looked around at other dbs, and they all state pretty much the same thing - that you can only store dbs on MS, then copy to RAM when you want to read/write with them. So it must be some sort of issue related to dbs, I guess.

I can confirm that TinyBytes created with SmartList are backward-compatible with ThinkDB. Tried it and it worked.

Probably the biggest advantage of upgrading was the free upgrade included a couple of optional components that cost extra from ThinkDB.

ShellyBelly: your site doesn't contain any plugins, or am I missing something here?

Thanks for the tip "sebring"!

There was once a plugin community with ThinkDB : http://www.thinkingbytes.com/sdk1/default.asp

The original website for plugins (same as Smartlist) :
http://www.thinkingbytes.com/products/plugins.asp

I'm afraid there's nothing more.

Just want to say that you can transfert the DB to the MS, but to be able to use it and add records you have to move it back to the PDA. Explaination here : http://support.dataviz.com/display.html?docid=12340
Finally it is not that cool.
