My advice is to buy the card from UsedPDAParts. It's already formatted, ready to go. You just plug it in and it works. The service is excellent.

If I understand your question correctly, "Does any CF work for HD to CF upgrade, or is there a specific model to buy?" According to the "Replace Microdrive with Compact Flash in Palm LifeDrive HowTo" page (http://howto.wikia.com/wiki/Howto_replace_microdrive_with_compactflash_in_LifeDrive") (which is actually a summery of the Replacing MicroDrive with Flash and Partitioning (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=111497) 1src thread) the following CFs are compatible:
Dane-Elec 4GB
Jessops 4GB
Patriot Signature 4GB Compact Flash (CF) Flash Media
Model PSF4G50CF
Model THNCF4G09PG(T01CA)
preformatted at Used PDA Parts
SanDisk 4GB
Model SDCFB-4096-A10
Model SDCFB-4096-E10
SanDisk Ultra II 4 GB
Model SDCFH-4096-388
Model SDCFH-4096-902
Model SDCFH-4096-AC11
SanDisk Extreme III 4GB
Model SDCFX3-4096-901
Model SDCFX3-4096-902
Toshiba 4G (Model THNCF4G09QG)
