View Full Version : Roll call for UX owners...
So, who all still has a Sony Clie UX50/40? I've noticed the board seems to be very quiet.
What do you all use your UX series for?
I'm looking to buy a UX50 in the near future. I owned one in the past which I bought right after they were introduced. Great PDA. Just didn't care for the battery life.
I've been through a few devices and am now looking to get a UX50 again. I've owned a Palm Zire, hx4700, Zaurus C1000, plus many different mp3 players and I now currently own an Ipod Touch. I love the touch interface but don't like that it doesn't have PDA functions. Which is something I miss.

I've used the UX50 twice, but both times.... the battery life made it useless.

Have you jailbroken your Touch? It still doesn't give you a Palm PDA, but it gives you a lot more options. That, and the SDK coming in February could make a huge difference.
I've owned various PDA's, including a UX50 at one point. If you need a powerful PDA and run Palm OS apps then there's no substitute. But the Touch is an amazing device. The web browser is awesome and has very good battery life, and I'm actually very fast now with the keyboard (faster than with my old TG50, but only with autocorrect to clean up my typing.)
The UX50 would still be a wonderful PDA today, except for the battery life.

still getting constant use out of my ux50!
I use it for nearly everything a pocket sized laptop would offer.
My workmates have new mobile phones and some even have imates, but i definitely don't feel like i have any less functionality than they do.
i get web, email, SMS, documents, spreadsheets, music, pictures, google maps, rss news, note taking, and of course PIM and alarm clock, (not to mention games...)
with a 2gb ms i find i also use the ux at work for document and file storage.
eg. i download display drivers from the dell website for a pc with no internet connection, copy them off my laptop to my ux using wifi smbmate, then plug the ux into the usb port of the dell machine i need to install the drivers onto.
also for the UX, and probably other palm os devices, i find that PsLink is a great tool to enable linking items together, turning the palm os into a kind of web environment... point and tap to navigate through information from different applications on the device.
eg. i have 'Progect' installed to manage tasks and information for projects. so, if i find a client from my address book, i can tap on their name and open the project file, then Tap on a task called "reply to Bill re: [How do i...?]s" and open the SMS application with that message that Bill sent to me, then decide i want to call Bill instead so i tap on his name and open the address book app item for Bill, then double tap Bills phone number to make my mobile dial Bill.
Then while i'm talking to Bill on my mobile i can take notes on my UX... this is something i haven't seen anyone with an iMate do!!!
anyway... hope you enjoy your UX as much as I enjoy mine :-)

I used a TH55 for a long long time, and have been loving it. I tried once to use a UX50 in the past, but got discouraged by the poor battery performance.
But that was before I got a UX50 with the extended EB40 battery! I never leave without that EB40 fully charged. I try to use the UX50 without it as long as I can, because it is slimmer, but as soon as I know I'll use wifi or other intensive tasks, I put the EB40 back on. I love the keyboard on the UX50, it is simply awesome. On the UX, I check my email regularly, watch ebay auctions and use it mainly as a note taking and reminder device. Some occasionnal movie clip watching, even though the TH55 is better at that. MP3 plays well with the built in player, and doesn't eat too much battery.

I have a UX50 which I use for TomTom 5. I have a cradle which plugs into a USB connector which I have modified (read butchered) to attach to a phone holder which sticks to the front windscreen. Without the charger, Tom Tom lasts for about 10 mins.
I find it works well, sometimes I use the PDA functions, I use RoadLingua to translate from English to Italian and BibleReader to have both an English and Italian translation at the same time. (I'm an English expat working with the Church in Italy.)
I tried Mapsonic from Michelin, but it would keep loosing the BT GPS device, having to reattach it every 5 mins doesn't lower the heartrate much.
