View Full Version : Which app is draining my battery?

Is there any tool available that will help to locate which application is draining the battery on my T|X even when switched off? Initially I suspected NVBackup - great app, but I do not have any daily schedule enabled. Then maybe DateBk6 - but I have no alarms set. Bluetooth, IR are both switched off, WiFi (though nothing should be using this when the T|X is switched off) is in Power Save mode.
Yet - despite all of these things, something is consuming power such that I cannot leave the device off charge overnight - it is always at zero charge in the morning if I do.
This effect started to happen at about the time I installed NVBackup (1.21), and I know that there have been some discussions about this consuming power in the past. Does this still run if the daily schedule is empty?

install palm internals, look through the alarms and notifications that run in the background and see if you see anything suspecting. If not, try turning of some apps in theses lists and check if it can be one of them.

If you are using a timed security lock (aka lock after x minutes) disable it and see if the problem persists. There seems to be a problem with the lock and certain software in the TX. If you need security temporarily use the "lock on power off" function.
See this thread for more info: http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134144
There is a replacement for the timed lock function called pautolock (http://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~koppen/pautolock/) so if you can verify the problem to be there, use that instead of the built-in thing.

In addition to the above, excellent advice, I'd add the following:
It's also possible that you just need to recalibrate your battery charger indicator... To do this, plugin your charger cable (the wall wart one NOT the USB one), then reset your device while plugged in. Now let it set undisturbed for 3-4hrs. You might need to do this a couple of times to finally get the calibration to take. This has been reported to solve a lot of battery issues.

Any chance we can sticky this? I'm sure I've replied to similar threads at least 3-4 times the last 6 months :)

Sticky, great idea, this has to be the most common threa started.
If all of the above checks out, Try charging the TX in the evening (to make sure it has a good charge for overnight), then before you go to bed Warm Reset it (while pressing the Up Button on the Five-Way Nav, depress the reset hole in the back of the unit, release the Up Button when you see the grey Palm Powered Logo, NOT the Orange Palm Logo), then turn the unit off, and check the battery in the morning. If it's drained, it's probable a hardware problem.

Thank you for all the great advice here.
After doing some detective work, it looks like the culprit was an application called "4cast" which had passed it's initial review period. Deleting that app seems to have cured the problem for the last 24 hours at least.

I use 4cast without issue on my TX. There is a setting for how often to have it update during the day. I personally only update once a day in the morning. I could totally see how updating every hour or something would eat up your battery. Also are you using the latest version? The developer is very responsive and updates frequently. You should email him if your problem can't be explained away by frequent updates.
Glad to see you found your problem. :D

I did not have the latest version and the evaluation period had expired. I have now corrected both those issues and reinstalled - we'll see if that is an end to the nocturnal electron eater.
This is now off (my original) topic, so I'll stop here (unless I have more on battery consumption later!).
Thanks again.
