View Full Version : RLock revisited

I have spent plenty of time reading peoples RLocked entries and played along for as long as I've had my TX, but recently found that after I had it disabled for a day I forgot to add apps to my RLock list. This means I have been running with no RLocked programs, yet everything seems to function as it did when I had RLock speckled with checked apps. I know some apps have been updated to be NVFS aware, but for certain have not. My UnCache list has grown, but that's a different animal IIRC.
Has anyone else backed off their RLocked population?
I have; I currently have 4 things locked by RLock:
BlueJ
EUAudio
PButton
ScrollBar5
-and I'm not sure SB5 really needs it (PButton has other issues, and I've actually stopped using it).

I tried RLock in the past, but I've found it to be unnecessary with what I have installed, and I've since disabled it and put it in storage. I worked with it during the early months of having my TX (now almost two years ago), and it never solved any of the issues I had with dodgey applications. I got UnCache during that early period, hoping to solve some software issues. Although I continue to use it, I probably don't actually need it either.

I significantly reduced items locked with rlock. Most apps now lock themselves. Originally I got it to help with LauncherX before it was updated to work with NVFS. Now LX is fine and I actually finalized rlock so it appears in prefs. Currently I have the following 3 apps locked:
Event Launcher (probably from when it was in beta)
Mcfile (which I don't really use anymore)
Moepaint (which I can't use anymore)

You absolutely need it for EUaudio. This is so stupid, because it is a Palm-released patch. They cannot make their own patches NVFS-aware. How pathetic is that!

Any users of IconPlus (like myself ;) ) should definately keep it locked with Rlock, as it makes it much much more stable.

EL you don´t need to,
McFile neither, as far as my device is concerned.
EUAudio is the only locked app on my device. It´s got to be locked with "Lock only code" UNchecked ... besides, vovka is right :)

You absolutely need it for EUaudio.Get out! You're right, that is absolutely (coining a new phrase here) PAlmTHETIC! I hadn't realized it, but then I didn't really notice the hiss this patch was to resolve. That's its' purpose, correct? Raising the preamp volume or something? If it doesn't work without being RLocked, I guess I don't really need it.

Try it, you´ll be surprised just how fine the TX´s sound can be :)

I've got the following on my RLock (most of them are older apps that I couldn't find new equivalents for):
AuDodo
Clips
IconsPlus
ToastTimer
SlovoEd dictionary
ShowBattery
daMemoPad

I can say for sure that AuDodo and ShowBattery don't need to be locked to work correctly.

I have both and neither are locked with rlock. I never installed euaudio because it seemed superfluous considering I don't use my TX for audio that often.

I tried RLock and after following the instructions and reading recommenations here I locked some apps but found my TX to be less stable.
I played around with different combinations but never came close to the stability I had before installing RLock so I deleted it.
I guess all my apps etc are NVFS stable.
I was using daMemopad for over a year with no problems at all.
I still have it in RAM but rarely use it as I now prefer ChronMemoDA :)
All the best, woz of oz

Thanks for the correction, FerdFerd & CyberDude! I can't remember why I put them on the list originally - probably an attempt to solve a vague stability problem. I'll take 'em off the list & see if things stay stable :D

PCQ, I don't use it for daMemoPad or ShowBattery either. All I have is EUaudio, and I'm not sure I'll keep it either since I listen to most of my music on my Sansa e280.
The reason I started this thread was that it seemed that so many apps needed to be RLocked, but I've seen no change in operation after a reduction in locks. Many of my old entries were for old apps that haven't been updated.

Thinking back, IIRC, the reason I locked some of these apps was to prevent them from getting flushed when OffFlush triggers... I was experiencing crashes for a while and was trying to get things more stable. I believe I went through and locked anything made pre-NVFS (that's why daMemoPad, clips and Toast Timer have been locked) I know that IconsPlus and SlovoEd (resident mode) behave better when locked. I think AuDodo falls into the pre-NVFS category although I've removed it now along with ShowBattery (probably added it at some point during beta testing and forgot to remove it).
All in all, locked apps are taking up <300k and RLock only takes up 46k. I know this might sound silly, but I'm leary of messing with anymore settings right now since my Precious is pretty darn stable - if it 'aint broke - don't fix it.

if it 'aint broke - don't fix it.Very true. I'm just so into making any improvements I can. I've got the heart and head of a tweker, but find with age comes a desire for simplicity and stability :). No more buying computers one piece at a time and overclocking them one step back from meltdown for me. I only OC the TX cuz it's a dog - and WarpSpeed makes it so darn easy!
wow! Great! Thanks!
My TX was crashing lately very frequently, like starting Opera Mini and then trying to launch Blazer after that crashed it 100% surely. And all that was due to this darned EUAudio patch which I had installed rather recently.
Simple Rlock for it and device is now much more stable.
My palm is rock solid (manuly reset once day)
The only reason I reset is because the freaking IRkeyboard app/driver stops working
I dont use rlock at all anymore (had irkeyboard in it butit doesnt fix it)
I used to use rlock alot, but after a few months of tweaking, I dont need it anymore.
Anyone know how to fix the keyboard app?

Could be more specific as to what your problem is? What are your power save settings? Are you using the updated driver from Palm? If you use unCache, is it on your list? I use UWK pretty much daily - and it works great for me.

I use daMemoPad without RLock installed and it does not crash or anything. IMHO, all those "tweaking" apps, end screwing the device. Just as those super "clean-registry-orphaned-files-speed-improvement-connection" for the PC. I once installed one of the most renowed ones and had to do a system restore. The PC crawled, the ADSL was slower than dial-up.
The only app of that kind that I use is OffFlush. And it is serving me well. No resets, except when I want, or when I play with some betas. :)
My 2 cents. :)

Regards,
I'm sorry to disagree here, but I don't really feel like RescoLocker is a Tweaking app in the same way others are... If you lock something with RLock you're only making sure that it doesn't get flushed when the DBcache clears (whether by manual/OffFlush like flushing or by the automatic/builtin Palm OS flushing). Since most of the portion apps that are actually locked are quite small - the end user doesn't miss much.
I will give you that using a pre-NVFS or non-NVFS compliant apps on an NVFS device is risky and that's why there's so many threads and compatibility lists for newer devices. So in the sense that I'm choosing to use old/non-NVFS apps and then needing to lock them into cache, I am in fact "tweaking" (I prefer using a work around ;) ) my device.
It's great to hear that you've been using daMemoPad with OffFlush and have no problems. I had put that one on the list preventively and will now try to remove it. Thanks for the heads up :D
EDIT: I just want you guys to know that I wasn't dismissing) those that had said they didn't have daMemoPad locked (I trust you guys)... It's just that no of you mentioned using it along side OffFlush as well and I thought things might be different between the two configurations. :)

I also do not have daMemoPad locked, and it hasn't adversely effected my device (I don't think anyways  )

I am still trying to figure out the audio patch thing. OK, so you have to RLOCK EuAUDIO, that is just Palm's half baked app. But what about Dmitry's Powervolume? Why do you have to Rlock that? Or maybe you dont have to?

My palm is usually quite solid now. Considering it's a T5, has Skin UI, Warpspeed, UDMH, Blue Fang, and tons of other hacklike apps, that is pretty good. Man, how long has it been since I've last visited? August? Holy crap, I've spent way too much time at BH. And having a life. ;)

It's just that no of you mentioned using it along side OffFlush as well and I thought things might be different between the two configurations. :)Let me throw that into the mix then. I use Off Flush 2.00 (set to 60%) with "Only on power button" set as well as manually a couple times a day.
As of this week, I also have the new DBCache Plugin running under the new ZLauncher beta. This <knock, knock on wood> seems to be working nicely.
