Hi. My Tungsten T recently bit the dust and got replaced with a Tungsten E2. For backup, I decided to try NVBackup 1.18 which I found at PalmGear. Just yesterday I discovered this was not the latest version and installed 1.21. Not being real diligent about doing backups, I chose to run automated backups at 1:00 am with a cycle count of 3. In the week or so I have been playing with this tool, I have never once got the atomatic backups to work. I am wondering if it has anything to do with AutoLock? Assuming I have not used the E2 within the last 10 min, this app locks me out til I enter a password.
The only other possibility that comes to mind is that my SD card was formatted long ago on my Tungsten T. But a manual backup DID appear to work just fine, so I think that is unlikely.

Pruss really needs to answer this one. IIRC, the regular palm security app did NOT intefere with automated backups, but then again since I don't use it - I don't know for sure. I believe Pruss' Picturelogin app, which I did use for a while (which uses the palm security app's password as a backup) did work with NVBackup.

Welcome to 1src :)

That's a very good thought. I don't know myself. I know that UNCache interfered with my backups some time ago, but that got fixed. I agree with cyberdude, this is a case for Pruss himself.

One thing you might try is turning off autolock and see if the autobackup works.

Good suggestion. I removed my AutoLock pin and changed the daily backup time to 1:00 pm. I checked back around 1:30 pm and sure enough there was a new cycle-backup there. So... Looks like some type of interaction with AutoLock. BTW, AutoLock has a fully functional 30-day trial if anyone else is interested in trying this. I started using it when I left one of my older Palm units at the grocery store. Fortunately, someone there was able to figure out how to call me. AutoLock lets me put my phone# right on the powerup screen  .

The auto-lock feature that comes with the TX works fine with NVBackup; I use them both with no difficulty. This might be something to report to the Autolock devs -- or, it might be that the security screen on TE2s isn't compatible with NVBackup and Alex needs to look into it.

The AutoLock I am referring to is a 3rd party shareware program developed by Catamount Software. Sorry, I should have been more explicit.

I guess it is I that should have been more explicit; I purposefully called the PalmOS one auto-lock, and the third party one Autolock. I was suggesting you contact Catamount Software regarding the issue.

I keep all my important stuff in SplashID behind a long password. Locking a device is too much to deal with for a number of reasons.

I am not here to discuss the merits of security applications. In fact, my reasons for using AutoLock have very little to do with security. My PIN is actually only 2 digits! I use it for the reasons mentioned above -- so if my PDA is misplaced for any reason, a person who finds it will be presented with a screen that shows my name and phone number. Once past that screen, I place sensitive information in Secret! "behind a long password" ;)
So I am basically interested in whether or not I can get AutoLock and NVBackup to play well together before the 30-day trial period for AutoLock runs out.
The suggestion that I take this up with the AutoLock developer is a good one -- since NVBackup is freeware, it should be no problem for him to do some testing! Not sure how their support is, but I guess it is time to find out.

Sorry ftwitty, I did not mean to offend :) .
Regarding my original issue, I traded some correspondence with the developer of AutoLock and he was not interested in any further development of his tool. So, I think that pretty much kills that option. But really AutoLock is primarily a security app rather than a "how to contact the owner" app. Since my sensitive data is already protected in Secret! with a long password however, security is not my main concern and my investigations have led me to a combination of the following 2 apps to suit my needs:
1. Event Launcher, and
2. Owner
Event Launcher has 2 things I like: 1. It allows user to run app only if device has been off for a specified number of seconds, and 2. It disables the launcher during a user designated time slot. Owner is a simple app which just shows the owner info from prefs.

Any idea if Alex Pruss' PictureLogin will work on your device? I just created a photo that had my picture, contact email address and a login prompt. Tap in the right combination on the screen, and you log in; otherwise, you get the regular security app prompt.

Dumb question: why doesn't the built-in security app work for you? From what others say it works with NVBackup.

Good question. I guess by injecting AutoLock into the conversation above I implied that I was asking about security + backup, when what I am really interested in is "who owns this PDA" + backup. I prefer not to enter a PIN every time I turn my PDA on, but want a clear method on how to contact me if I misplace it (like I did once in the past :( ). Anyway, I picked up AutoLock a while back because it clearly states owner information when turned on after some user specified period of time. The password I have set for it is trivial. All information that is of real importance to me is encrypted using Secret!.

I recommend using Alex's PictureLogin with a single tap as the login key then -- you can make a really snazzy "Who owns this device?" graphic, and it goes away with a single tap... if you know where to tap. Adds a touch of security, and doesn't get in your way.

I forgot about this app. I used to use it quite often. I made a new screen as you suggested. It works great, but is there a way to get your palm to autolock when it turns off - I haven't locked my palm in so long, I don't remember!
