View Full Version : How do you utilize your new storage options?

I've seen a couple of posts about how some are using their newfound storage options and was wondering if we could use this thread to post our ideas and experiences about what works best and why?
I just got my Sandisk 1GB and I've got so much space that I really want to "plan" on the best use of it.

i have a 512Mb CF
i have mostly MP3 and books on it
but I also use it for backups
I'm using mine to essentially replace my everyday MemoryStick. I do alot of photography with my DSC-F707 and like to pop it into the Clie to look at the pics while I'm on the go. I also have a couple of sticks of MP3s so it makes more sense to keep the MS slot available for other things. Now I just need the BT stick to complete my setup.

I'm still waitting for my Sandisk 1GB CF card, and I mostly plan to use it for MP3. I have a 128 MB Memory Stick, and only 20 songs on it. The new storage space will help me have much more music, and free my MemStick for photos & videos. I guess 1GB is a lot of space, so maybe i will use the CF card for videos too.

I use it for backups as well. In fact, it works with BackupBuddyVFS when in masquereding (sp) mode.

I use it mainly for storing MP3s & watching last night's video recorded using my PVR card during my train trip to work.

Still playing with my new toy! But currently
CF - purely mp3
MS - iSilo Books, pictures and recorded voice notes
When I get a larger MS, (currently a 32MB - "borrowed" from the camera!) then I'll move any games and apps that are not in Flash onto it.
A larger CF (currently a 64MB - 28Euro) will have to wait until my next trip to the US (if you really want to get hacked off with prices, just compare the cost of the Sandisk 1GB on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk!!!!)
Not sure where to backup too, I guess that the MS is safer because it will always work (and allow me to recover the CF Driver if I cannot get it into Flash)

I use my Clie and iGB CF as on the road storage for my Sony F717 digicam. Its slow transfer, about 25min, but is great at battery usage, only about 9%.
The probelm is that with 128MB MS prices now around $30 I did not save much with my $200 CF card. But at least now I get all the other uses for additional storage for Clie, like more music, video, and reviewing lots of photos.

I have a one-gig CF card.
310 megs store my mp3 music files.
176 megs are my documents. This is mostly a collection of 900 science fiction and fantasy novels, though it does include some usefull stuff like a first aid manual.
58 megs stores a couple of Kinoma movies, just to show off.
12 megs stores web pages captured by iSilo.
7 megs are various applications stored in PowerRun.
7 megs are snapshots taken with the NX70's camera, mostly of my cats.
1 meg stores my Mapopolis maps.

MP3s & Movies on my (512M) Compact Flash
Virtually all my Apps on my MS
In Masq mode I can still use the camera and save to MS

on my 128 mb CF goes the enterprise episode of the current week and the whole palm/launcher and programs/powerun folders.
I keep using my memory sticks the same way I did before, mp3 and docs, and stuff I like to bring with me sometimes.
And I keep hoping for a bluetooth CF driver, and now this CF45 CF phone...
auch, I really hope my NX lasts reaaaaally long, I don't see sony keeping the CF slot after they begin selling a wifi ms...

I've noticed a couple of really good points about CF storage and Memory stick in regards to "what happens if I gotta do a hard reset". Looks like having essential drivers or a full backup on a non pro version MS might be a really good option (especially since the old versions are now getting inexpensive)
This way you can always be assured that you can use the latest patches/drivers/etc. anywhere anytime!
...just thinking

Well, I have the CF drivers in flash, but you're right. I keep FlashEnable on the MS so that after a hard reset, I can get to the stuff in flash, including my backup program.

CF
MPG movie files from my Sony DSC-P9 camera (300MB)
MP3 music (200 MB so far)
MS
Back ups
Avantgo
Voice recorder
ackbar

mp3's 300 mb
movies 100 mb
iSilo 10 mb
pictures 40 mb
the rest I am using to shuttle software between my work PC, laptop, and home PC. Between those $7 CF to PCMCIA adapters and the many cheap USB CF readers I will never travel again with a stack of floppies. Its extremely convenient to transfer customers their software and backups on a CF card...

ACK,
That's cool!! I seem to keep having a little trouble "loosening up" on being a storage miser, even with a 1GB CF card! I guess I've been conditioned from all those Palm Pilot years?

I don't have my 256M CF card yet but...
I plan to put books, Quickword files, Mapopolis and maps, and music on the CF. This will free up a couple of 128M sticks. Then I can use DVDx to rip movies onto the 128M sticks. It will take two sticks to watch a movie but thats OK. If the new driver allows watching movies from the CF I'll reverse the actions and buy additional CF cards.
The bottom line is it is handy to have two memory slots and CF is less expensive.

I use the CF card to store MP3 and pictures. My digital camera uses CF cards too and it is great to have the NX70 as a portable picture book.

Plan to put XMap maps and data for the whole stinking country on CF. Remainder for MP3s and possibly small videos of things I'm trying to learn or demonstrate.
BTW, great advice about drivers/backups on MS.

Anyone having any luck with Documents To Go files on the CF? I'm not having much success. What's the secret?

I haven't tried D2G on MS or CF yet but I've seen in other threads that you should be sure to leave the "Documents" program in RAM and you can put the rest of the progs (Word2Go, Pics2Go, etc.) on MS or Card. I also read at one point on the Dataviz site that you need to first have all your docs in RAM and then use Docs to Go to move them to the MS (or CF). I guess that establishes the directories. There may be a shortcut, but you can go to the Dataviz site for the latest?

XMap is put out by Delorme to transfer and use Street Atlas maps on your handheld. I have it, but removed it from my Clie as I don't GPS installed on it and it's LowRes 160x160, yucky!

Docs can be synced directly to the card. First it needs to create the /Palm/Programs/DXTG folder. Then it puts a hidden card identifier file that is hooked into VFS. (The only way I could delete it, was to use an external card reader.) The desktop first has to see the folder on the Clie and then a category is created for it. The whole procedure is in the extensive desktop PC's DTG help files.

Anyone hear anything about Powerrun v1.3 being released? It is supposed to support dual card usage.

I am a professional photographer and I've just found out that the ClieViewer recognizes the picture format from my S2Pro... which means it is pretty cool that I can view my photos directly from my FinePix Camera...
too bad it is too slow... but it is ok... I can live with that...

There is an updated version of Clie viewer on Sony's support site.

Additionally Acid Image is much nicer and faster, but not free
