View Full Version : SD card reader for PSP on UX
I saw the threads about the 4in1 and the Datel 4GB Harddrive and their somewhat compatibility with the UX so I thought I'd give this new device a try. Its called the Double Expand Memory Converter for PSP. It is similar to other other two above devices in that it has a Pro Memory Stick input into a box. The box has two SD/Mini-SD/MMC readers. Unlike Jamerican's experience with the harddrive this has a very flexible cable.
Anyway, it came in the mail yesterday and I have both 128MB and 2GB SD cards. Put the adapter on it and..... nothing. I have the FAT32 prc installed and tried several resets but nothing. It clicks in like it should but no LEDs come on, device shows no Memory Stick, nothing.
I was hoping that someone would have some ideas on this to help me out. My wife has a Treo 680 which uses the SD cards so this would be handy to get worked out.
Thanks in advance.

Excellent idea - I'd really like one if it works. Have you tried using the adaptor with just one card at a time?

One card and two cards. Nada. I looked through my apps and saw that for some reason I have CF Mount with the 'Mount MS' checked off. When I get back home from work I will try and fiddle with those settings to see if I can get it to work.
Prior to installing I downloaded the FAT32.patched.prc from Dmitry's site. When I went to install it It was already on my RAM. I guess I forgot I had already done so. I don't recall if the first one was 'patched'. Does anyone know what, if any, difference there are between the original FAT32 and the patched prc?
I'll keep trying.
BTW- the card reader was only $25. Took two weeks to come in from Honk Kong.

Nada does nothing :P
well anyway this sounds interesting!
I think the FAT32 patched prc is a driver to use FAT32 on removable media storge for Clie UX50 (in fact Memory Stick cards)
FAT32 natively supports more than 2 GB or 4 GB or whatever you think the usable limit is...
please tell us when it works, then I'm going to buy it...

Update:
I figured I should test the reader out so I attached a memory stick adapter to it and put it in my card reader (which is integrated into my printer). The computer does not react but the printer's window says the card is in upside down. This may be the cause of the reason the Clie is not recognizing the reader. Next I need to find a local person who will let me test it out on the PSP which is what it is designed for. My best friend has one but he is half a country away.
More tests to follow...
I realized that the 128MB card I had was originally used in my old camera. It was formatted as RAW. I tried to reformat (my only card reader at home is on the printer) but my PC was giving me fits (probably because of the printer reader). Somehow after numerous attempts it said it was formated as FAT. It would not let me format as FAT16 (the only other drop down option it showed).
I removed the new SD card and popped it in the double reader and then into the UX.
Memory stick LED flickers... zilch.
Reset... no go.
I then noticed that the SB icon was trying to read the card. It would show a question mark on occasion but would not read the card.
I then fiddled with inserting and then starting to eject but only about a mm and holding it there.
The UX starts to read the SD card but takes about a minute.
Presto... built in Media Info shows a 120MB Memory card. File Manager allows me to open the card (takes about a minute) and apparently the UX did 'format' the card and create a Palm folder with the appropriate sub folders.
I tried a screenshot capture and it did write a bmp file to the card but it seems to have errors and won't open.
Tomorrow I will try to format the card a different way.
Anyone have any input regarding the 'seating' of the card in the UX. I tried to bypass the adapter and just insert the Duo size 'card' but it had a bump which prevents it going in that far. I thought I read previously that the adapter really isn't needed but obviously makes it easier to remove sticks.
More to follow.

sorry to inform you, but 4gb is the max for the ux with the fat32 driver.
i tried 8gb msdue which works on my psp, camera and card reader. it wont recognize by the ux and giving a question mark on the ms status icon. 8gb sd card don't work either (using neo 4in1 adapter), but this might be because the sdhc thing.
4gb of both kinds work just fine.

if you put an msduo card over ms card youll notice that the connectors are just the same. the msduo is only half short and 2/3 thick of the regular ms. i can put msduo directly in my card reader even though its not supporter without the adapter.
the ux is another thing since the ms card fits entirely into the unit and you wont be able to push him entirely, and if you would, you cant take it out.
BTW: if you want to expend your ux, buy the neoflash 4in1 adapter. you can fit it to the back of the ux and it will give you access to ms/msduo, sd/mmc and cf1/2 cards (no microdrive, flash only).

I would love to buy a 4in1 but because ling sink or whatever it was called was sued by Sony they no longer offer it. I found a few sites that sell them but they want upwards of $70 and usually sell it as a package with a 4GB harddrive. The 8in1 is readily available but way too bulky for my needs.
I feel confident that I almost have this working.
Finally figured out what the problem was. The Duo type card on the reader is not exactly the same dimensions as a standard Duo. My real Duos have a small nick on the non angled corner that goes in first. The SD Duo card did not. I was at work and not around my regular tools but took a cheap knife and cut a portion off. The problem was the SD Duo was not seating in the Duo adapter properly.
I inserted the double reader with a 128MB card and.. yippie! It works.
Its much slower than a standard memory stick but I'm still satisfied.
The reader only appears as a memory card when an SD card is inserted. I only have one working SD card here at work so I have yet to tell what both slots filled will do. The SD card I do have will only appear if it is in slot A.
After I finish testing out a second card the next step will be modifying the reader to be more ergonomic with the UX. My other SD card is 2GB so we will see how the limit reacts (2GB + 128MB).

I'm now tempted to find one of these (although they seem to be ridiculously expensive to have them shipped to the UK). I would also be really interested in seeing whether the unit could be modified to accept it's own power supply.
Tried it with the 2GB SD in slot A. It is very slow but after several attempts did show the 2GB card on the File Manager. Filez had some trouble with it and wouldn't show it present. While the 2GB was in slot A I placed the 128MB in slot B. It did not show. I read some PSP forum where I guy did some format technique to make it work.
The device is acting up now and doesn't always want to show up. I have to push it in and let it spring out a few times to sorta trick the UX into reading it. I may have to look again at the corner snip.

I suppose the next thing to try (once you have it working consistently) is to see whether the slow read speed negatively affects the playing of video and audio files from the SD card...
I read somewhere on this forum (may have been with the 4in1) that certain built in apps don't work with the SD cards. Clie media player, voice recorder, etc. I can say that media player was unresponsive. Clie camera did load up and seemed to take a picture but I cannot find where it is at (doesn't appear to be in the regular folder). Voice recorder did work however. It took a while to save the recording but it did work.
I'll do some testing on the playback speed of video and audio.

How did you get on with the tests? I have just found an ebayer who will ship one of these to the UK for a reasonable price and I'd like to know how good video playback was before I make the leap and order one...

just get a 4gb ms. i got 2 of these converters and beside the big size it doesn't works well. it won't support sdhc cards anyway nor microdrives.
It was really only a proof of concept experiment. It initially reads very slow when inserted. I only can get one SD card to read and only from Slot A. I cannot get any videos or music to play. Device just freezes up. I really don't find it too useful. That being said, I will probably still throw it in when I get ready to sell my UX50 and all accessories now that I have replaced it with a Treo 680.

That's a shame - SD cards are so much cheaper than Memory Sticks :(
