a little pricey. I love Sony design but I'm not sure I would pay this much for a small ultra portable. I'd probably go for a lightweight tablet pc instead.

I love the idea but not the price. I have seen the price fall by £300 here in the UK this week, so maybe come January it will actually be affordable ;)

It's not a true evolution of the CLIE UX design, it's a VAIO running a full version of Windows XP or Vista. To see the heritage of it look at the VAIO U8 series as opposed to any CLIEs....

Yeah, I totally agree.

As you may know Toaster, Sony doesn't make PalmOS powered PDAs anymore. It doesn't make sense to compare the CLIE UX and the VAIO UX, because they're completely different.

yeah I know. It's a totally different hardware plattform (Intel Architecture hehe), but I just wanted to know if you like the design of the Sony Vaios UMPCs more or less than the design/usability of the Sony Clie PDAs.

I would have thought that most people given the choice would prefer one of the £2,000 VAIOs.... For me personally the biggest selling point with my UX50 is the wifi and bluetooth which in turn lead to any time anywhere internet access to full e-mail and the browsed internet. Hence I'd prefer a VAIO, especially the version with a flash-memory hard drive for speedy operation.

ps, I've actually had a real good shot of one of the VAIO UMPC's running Vista and they're great to use, touch screen functionality is spot on. One pleasant wee surprise is that it's an identical stylus to the UX50 that pops out of the silo :D

I owned one for a few months. It's really pretty cool. Not really for everyday use. I needed a bigger screen. So, I sold it.

I have to be positive about it since I have one for more than a year (since July 2006). I use it to store my electronic travel stuff (pictures, dive logbook, maps, etc.). It is compact enough to cary around when laptop is too big.

To give Sony credit, the Vaio UX is not receiving the greatest reviews in the tech press but they have not given up on the UMPC and have been steadily refining the design since the original release. For instance, the original Vaio UX had a standard hard drive whilst the latest iteration has a 32GB flash drive. Good on 'em I say.

How big are the new Sony Vaio UMPCs (specifically the Vaio UX)?
Are they bigger, less or equal than the Sony Clie UX50?

on the photos they look like normal notebook's sizes, but it's Ultra Mobile and there stands it feeds in my pocket....

According to the specs (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665246465), the Vaio UX measures 5.91”(W) x 3.74”(H) x 1.27-1.50”(D) making it larger than the UX50. HTH.

i personally think the screen is just too small. i was thinking between the UX and TZ but i think i made my choice, im going to buy a TZ soon.
