Can we do anything about these unregistered users who flood the forums with threads about nothing? I don't see why we shouldn't just make people register before they post. I have nothing against unregistered people reading the posts, but when they open their mouths it can turn ugly. How much trouble is it to register anyway, if you really need a question answered?
I know this has been said before, but it needs to be said again, now that I've seen the problem firsthand.

I will not register until I buy a clie. I have never owned a palm unit of any kind, but am intensively researching them to buy one in the near future.
If unregistered users are banned, I won't participate, just read.
It sounds like many would happy about that, oh well. :)

you see unregistered, a bad man posted as an unregistered and said some very bad things, some people are not good and pure. it's not that we do not wish for unregistered posters to post, we just wish that the bad men would go away...

Couldn't say it better myself. Well, then again I can't say much at all very well. :-P I see this Unregistered's plight, but really it does only take like 30 seconds to register, and then cookies take care of the rest forever afterward.

Also it would eliminate the double posts of "Hey that was me up there my cookies got wiped" :).
The mods here are pretty good about taking care of the type of thing I think you (CoolDoctorJ) are refering to; but there's still a lot of trolls out there. While it's been said that someone could register just to troll, I think it would be a sufficent barrier to entry to make most of them go away. Plus having to have a verifyable email address on file would virtually put an end to "Hey check out my warez site" type posts.

also please do something about the registered users who post about nothing or post the same things over and over again or just post to say they agree or "ditto" ? some seem to just like to run up their total posts numbers.

Well the registered users of this site do have a right to express themselves no matter how insignificant you think, but the people who are unregistered sometimes stir up some emotions and do some unscrupulous stuff.

oh, i get it now, if you are registered what you say has value no matter how meaningless it is and all registered users are honest upstanding citizens while unregistered people are all borderline criminals.
thanks for the clarification.

It's certainly not a black and white issue, where all unregistered posters are bad and all registered posters are good. I would say that the majority of unregistered posts are very good, just as it's also true that some registered users cause trouble or make posts that don't add anything. But it's also true that the majority of the trouble posts are made by unregistered posters, whether it's due to the desire for being anonymous (as if a username gives an identity) or if it's a drive-by trolling. I'm not sure where I fall on the issue. I certainly don't want to drive good people away who might be hesitant to try the site out if they can't make unregistered posts first (though I don't see why it's a big deal to register), but as a mod, I would love to see episodes like what we had last night minimized, with 20-30 threads of total garbage started by an unregistered poster. I used to be well on the side of let's let things be, but with all the problems lately, I'm moving closer to the side of wanting to ban unregistered posters at the expense of also driving away good, valid posters. Tough issue, that's for sure.

Sigh... the least you could do is have a name, even if you are unregistered. I bet you wouldn't say such scathing things if you could be identified. Like I said before, I dare you to register and say that again. It's not like it's a life-altering or even time-consuming event.
I said my part, now I'm done with this flamewar.

If we can make time to post, we can make time to register.
It's not at all that uncommon. Many forums have you register before you can post anyway.
I honestly believe that the integrity of most of the those that have all ready registered is way above standard and that it would be nice to reward those who thought it was WORTH the time and effort to register a community where no one(good or bad) who posts is wearing a "hood".
Thanks

Of couse we do. And I'm quite certain most of us are doing those things as well.
But otherwise, I don't consider positive suggestions on the "registration" subject to be barking (as you put it).
I along with many others am hoping that by implementing mandatory registration, most will think twice before posting offensive, crude or meaningless posts.
I also beleve that not only would we have a much friendlier forum, but that some of the unregistered who do have much to offer or ask will have a face or at least a name.
We've all seen that "That last unregistered was me" but I've also seen "That last unregistered wasn't me" to avoid misreprensentation.
And sure, one can still be rude hiding behind a registered name, but atleast I can identify the individual and possibly ignore his posts or a particular thread altogether.
Not barking, just trying to share positive input on an important subject.

I can see some justification in the unregistered case. I may be paranoid, but today's society is heading down the Orwellian path where there is no longer any privacy. So why must we advertise ourselves in a forum such as this purely for the gratification of others?
The recent court case with Verizon attacks file sharing networks and their users (I don't want to argue the pro's and con's here) and it has implications on privacy. I'd like to surf the web etc with a fair degree anonymity and not be dicatated to by others. No I'm not a criminal, I just don't see why I should have to tell eveyone what I'm doing! (Even if I were a crim, I'm sure the NSA or most any other government could figure out what I was up to very quickly.)
However in saying all that, registration can be a pretty anonoymous (and painless) process, so is there anything to worry about?
I registered because it feels to me like I am part of the CLIE community, I am able to share my views with others, while plagerising other people's ideas . I could do this anon but as someone pointed out, it wouldn't raise my number of posts :p.
BTW, I'm obviously not that paranoid - I registered!

"Threads about nothing" ?
Shouldn't we refer to them as the "Seinfeld" threads ?

Oh wow! I was just pointing out to a friend the other day that with all of these nutso law suits where no one wants to accept responsibility for themselves will eventually force the government to start monitoring society more and more closely...etc, etc.
And it's not just that, it stems right into the fact that so many parents don't "want" (I use that loosely) to raise their kids. They expect the school to do it. And when they don't pay attention to what the kids are watching/reading they blame the violence and porn on the problems the kids have!
What was this thread about again?
Oh yeah, unregistered users. I just noticed now that there is a password field up there when you're not logged in (I just installed mozilla last night). But if you're only concerned about voicing your opinion *cough* it is very easily overlooked. Maybe once you hit submit it should ask if you are sure you want to post as unregistered....hmmm

Well dammit! I know I typed my correct password up there.
And now I find out that quoting/editing replies (using mozilla) works fine if you're unregistered, but doesn't when you are logged in!!! Anyone know what's up with that?

In all the time that Unregistered took to make all of his posts, he could have registered, and then we'd actually CARE about what he had to say!
OK, that was a bit harsh, but really!
