View Full Version : No Prefs after Hard Reset

My unstable TX seems to reset regularly these days. I've done several hard resets, and the weird thing is that all appears well at first except the prefs do not load. It just sends me back to the Palm menu. On occasion, it will reset by itself and start with the opening screen asking me to Hotsync my TX as a new user.

When I try to do a selective restore of my software (NVBackup), it still gives me problems although I can access the Prefs then. I've even tried loading programs one by one, and I still find it's unstable.

Any suggestions?

That is strange behavior... Are you positive you're doing a HARD reset, where you hold down the power button and press the reset hole simultaneously? Have you been having problems with your power button at all?

How did you upgrade from prior Palm?

What third-party apps are you installing?

Any suggestions? This is a good web site to remember:
http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,case=obj(887)
I've had the very problem you describe. I ended-up trying several different resets described on this web site. Sorry to say I don't remember for sure which one saved my bacon; but I think it was the "zero-out reset".

p.s. Have you tried a full (non-selective) restore using NVBackup?

I've had the TX for about a year and a half, and have sampled quite a few programs, But here are the ones I have in it right now...

Zlauncher. Datebook6. PalmaryClock, NVBackup, MyKeybd, FontSmoother, NetFront, Bejeweled, ClockPop, FileZ, NoAlarms, Ptunes Deluxe, skinUI, TCPMC, Vexed, PowerDigi

Thanks for the response PinCushionQueen, I know I've done a hard reset. The TX is my 4th Palm.

Zano2004....I haven't tried a zero out reset; but if I recall a year or so back when I made the effort, it seemed to be almost physically impossible unless I had a third arm. I'll check out the Palm link.

Thanks for your suggestions... I love using the TX, and really appreciate it more since I had go back to my older Palm recently.

I just hard reset my PalmTX.

My Fontsmoother font settings vanished :-( Is there any way to preserve the font settings across a hard reset? e.g. by setting the Backup bit on some preferences file? I tried looking for files starting with "FontSmoother" and files with Creator ID "GrFn", but none of them seemed to be preferences databases.

You need to back up the SavedPrefsDB and UnsavedPrefsDB files. HotSync will normally do this for you automatically.

Cheers, _Em. I'll go set the Backup bit on them.

I have a NVBackup from before the hard reset. Is it dangerous to restore just those files?

Not at all, unless there is something very corrupted. If you have a backup from 1 or 2 days ago (I keep 2 "NVBackups" from the last 2 days), you should be safe. I just restore those ones and psysLaunchDB.pdb when I install something weird that wipes my preferences and categories.

If you set up the backup bit, remember to delete those files in case you upgrade to another device, they may screw up and drive you to an endless loop. Every time I upgrade, I use HotSync or if I choose to use the SD backup, just restore programs (which I already know they are compatible with the new machine) and their databases. I prefer to enter the preferences manually instead of "chasing" a problem. Takes less time. :)

Thanks Greek. I'll go restore them -- I really liked the font settings I had. Putting them all back was going to be a tedious nuisance. You and _Em just saved me trouble.

<embarrassed> I am an idiot. FontSmoother stores its font settings in a separate file, "GrFn-FontSmoother per app opt"

Thanks to Dr. Pruss for his prompt reply to my email; and for not saying "duh" when he replied. Thanks, _Em and Greek, for assuming I'm smart enough to have checked for such a file before asking here.

Restoring that file got my font settings back. I've now set its Backup bit so this problem should now be fixed.

Good to know you solved it. I must confess I did not remember at all that FontSmoother kept a separated file for the settings. :D Sorry I didn't check, it would have saved you some time. :)
