View Full Version : Looking for an app: scientific calculator DA

I am trying to find a calculator desk accessory with scientific functions.
Alternatively, I could try to accessorize any calculator app with Pruss's Accessorizer. However, I found that some apps don't accessorize so well -- they tend to crash when ran as DAs. For instance, Powerone Graph gives intermittent resets when accessorized..
So, maybe, if someone already accessorized a scientific calc and has good results, could you please let me know??
Just so you know, I've had no problems using an accessorized Power48 -- as long as I don't run out of memory.

Does that calculator only offer RPN mode?

Try Accessorizer, which can make a DA from any app. You can use the calculator of your choice, and turn it into a DA. You need both Accessorizer and a hack manager running - I use YAHM.
What do you need the hack manager for? I haven't had YAHM installed for over a year; last thing I had that used it was FontSmoother 1.
Power48 is really an emulator for the HP 48SX (http://www.hpmuseum.org/hp48s.htm), 48GX and 49G (http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/abouthp/histnfacts/museum/personalsystems/0046/index.html).
All three are RPN-based programmable graphing calculators. I'm sure you could write a program for one of them that uses another notation method, however.
For anything more basic, I just use the Palm Calculator (Calc v 1.0.1), which has more than enough modes for simple calculations.

I cannot accessorize Palm built-in calc .. Just does not work. Makes the DA, but the DA won't launch..

It works for me.
Maybe you have calcDA (its a standalone da) installed?

I have Palms built in calc "OnTop'ed" (Accessorizers successor, no pun intended), and it works great.....

Just found the problem! My built-in calculator does not run at all, forget accessorized mode, just wont't run in a regular mode. I launch the CALC app, but the screen just blinks once..
Isn't it in ROM? Help!

Yes Calc is ROM-based, try deleting it's Saved/Unsaved Preferences with RE.

NOOOO! Just for a stupid Calc app?
Found the problem! My bad! CalculusDB creator type was screwed up. I guess, SciCalc (built in) needs it? Now, why would it get screwed up, you may ask?
At some point, I was remapping EasyCalc to be called up whenever I referred to a built in calculator. So, I started messing around with creator types of different calculators using FileZ.. And then I forgot...
I think it is OK now. But why CalculusDB? I thought internal calculator could not do any calculus....

Good news: my built-in Calc works and I accessorized it.
Bad news: it causes soft resets after I pop it on top of 2day. Not all the time, but sometimes..

Does it work after a no notification reset (the one where you keep pressing down)?

Just to make sure I understand: you are suggesting that I do a soft reset and press the "down" key while doing it?
I am aware of a soft reset when pressing the "up" key, but the one you are suggesting is different? What does that do exactly?

There are dozens of calculators around for Palm, most free, and many are more sophisticated than most people need. It's one of the easiest apps to build, so it's very common. Any freeware site should yield what you want, and then you can accessorize it.

Here is what I found.
Some accessorized calculators cause a soft reset upon exiting. This happens specifically when popped on top of 2day, not with other apps (for instance, not in LauncherX).
1. Accessorised PowerOne Graph causes a soft reset.
2. Accessorized built-in Calc causes a soft reset.
3. Accessorized EasyCalc DOES NOT cause a soft reset. YEAH, I will stop experimenting at this point

Sorry, I meant the reset you mentioned. I was just waking up when I wrote the reply :)

49G is not RPN, I think, or at least has a non-RPN mode.
I just tested it out, and you appear to be correct; the 49G does standard notation as well.
I have no Idea how this will help anyone, except that I have solved my problem for a simple caclulator, SnapCalc5 which I found here:

As for a scientific calculator, I was able to successfuly accessorize the built in ScientificCalc. :D

The last great RPN HP Calculators were the 48S and 48G.
