Having experimented with an large number of OS5 programs, I now would like to clean up un-needed files from RAM. Unfortunately I can not figure out what files or applications can be safely removed.

Is there a source that defines for explains what file are by their name. For example: Can I delete DSLib, MathLib, qsimport, ZLib, etc.? I am wondering what these files are and if they are leftovers from applications that I no longer use.

Mathlib belongs to powerone and Zlib belongs to Lightnzip.
There is a very good program for monitering newly installed apps, especially their data that get left behind. Here's a link.

you can also use the Creator ID database to track 'em down

One way to see what's save to move is put everything you have a question about on your memstick (maybe make a cleanup folder or something) and check your programs to make sure they run OK, then you'll know they're safe to delete.

Or, alternately, you could do a hard reset and fresh install the programs you know you want to keep.  I do that once every couple months, just because (oddly, I usually end up getting about a 1MEG back!).Yes, I know I'm a sad, twisted person . . .

The combo of CleanUp and Uninstall Manager is a very nice one. CleanUp is for current apps and Uninstall Manager is to avoid leaving leftovers on your device from now on. It is the best combo on the market:)

I know that this is a hatefurl solution but this is what I do... about twice a year. A hard reset then reinstall programs...

I agree. But the upside is that reinstalling to the PDA isn't anything like reinstalling to a desktop. Just go into the archive directory and delete the installable PRC files and sync it.

Did that last night actually. Gained 3m from all the BS files that stayed on.

At most, it is a 5 minute operation. From hard reset to reload from the archive folder.

Another strategy for unknown files, is to move them to a temporary directory on MS to see if any app blows up, before you delete them.

There is also another app called Leftovers that shows orphaned files, but be careful, it isn't always correct. I might be useful for deciding which file to move to a temporary MS directory.

CleanUp has the ability to back them up before removal so that if the removal causes some error or other problem it can be restored again from within the CleanUp application:)

Yellowrose can you walk me through that a bit? I've put my NX through the paces so I've had a do a few hard resets. I am familiar with that but want to understand how you do your re-install. I have most programs loaded onto the memory stick with PowerRun. I also use JackFlash for a few. I've always just restored from the BackupMan file and have to run Flash Enable and reinstall the driver for my WiFi card...and then I'm back to where I was. My question is---do I wipe my memory card? (I know I can copy the contents onto a file in my PC) I certainly wouldn't want to loose the database for my datebook. I have a nice icon set finetuned for Datebook 5 with Icon Manager. I don't want to do that again so I need to keep that too. There must be many things I'd need to save a reinstall. How do you handle this and really start from scratch?

one thing that can save you 600K is if you have ever used PhotoEditor, and dont' want to use it anymore

use MCFile and find a photoeditor file that is 600K and remove it.
It seems to be something that is created if you ever use Photo Editor and open up a blank canvas. hey, any K helps.

1.  Rename your backup file on your PC.  It's under your user name in the Sony Handheld folder.  I usually use the date tacked on to the end.

2.  I usually remove my card, no reason, I just do.  Then perform a hard reset.  Nothing should show up except what you have in JackFlash (unless you want to reinstall them too . . . then take them out of flash before your hard reset).

3. At this point, you'll have a 'clean' PDA . . . doing a hotsync will reinstall your database files (i.e. datebook, memopad, etc.) but since you renamed your backup file, no programs will re-install.

4.  Start re-installing your programs.  I usually re-download everything, just to make sure I have the 'latest & greatest' but it's probably not necessary.   It is fine to re-install your apps (and icon file) from your PC back up directory (the one you re-named) unless you've been having random hard resets, soft resets or freezing issues - then there could be a corrupt app and I highly recommend re-downloading everything.  Also, if you use BBVFS OS5, you can selectively install from that directory.

5. You will have to re-enter your reg codes using this method.

Please let me know if anything is unclear ~ and everybody else pipe in if I've forgotten anything.

GOOD LUCK!

But what about all those apps on my memory card? Do I need to wipe it, then reinstall stuff there via PowerRun or ZLauncher?

That brings up another question. I can move things to card via ZLauncher, right? Should I just use that and not use PowerRun at all? I like how PowerRun puts the programs in a directory for each program....not sure how ZLauncher handles the move.

I don't bother to 'empty' my card . . . only time I can imagine that would be useful is if you've got a corrupted app. You will have to re-enter those apps' reg numbers.

And I use PowerRun WITH ZL, because PowerRun has the ability to move apps AND databases to the card.  Saves a good amount of space!

SysTool is a quick and easy app that allows you to view and delete saved and unsaved preferences.

I use PowerRun and I have two SD cards so I can alternate backups using BackupMan. My problem is having different programs on different cards. I'd like to get the same programs on both cards so that the only difference is my daily backup data. Tried copying one card's content to the PC and copying back to the other card but PowerRun wants the cards swapped. Any idea how I can "clone" the SD card, or copy the same programs from the Palm to both cards? PowerRun will only Move a program, not copy it. Thanks!

I believe that PowerRun uses the card name in its shortcuts; have you tried naming both cards the same name? Obviously this would require you to put a physical label on them to distinguish between the 2

ZLauncher stores app and databases in a separate folder for each app and reloads both when needed in memory. I doubt that you would need PowerRun if you are running ZLauncher.

Note: Zlauncher also recognizes apps in the Launcher folder, but does not manage them the same way (i.e. the databases remain in memory). When I got ZLauncher, I moved my "Launcher" apps one at a time into memory, then used ZLauncher to move them back to the card in the ZLauncher managed folder.
