Palm OS loyalty: Commodore/Amiga and Palm OS similarities

The Palm OS/Palm Devices community reminds me of the Commodore and Amiga users back in the 80s. Commodore was once an empire (just as now Microsoft is), and now purely extinct and lives on in the minds of retrocomputer enthusiasts.
I'm not that old, I grew up in the NES days playing Super Mario Bros.
But I played around with a C64 growing up.

Palm Computing or Palm Inc had its golden age back in 1996-2002, but now its very distant in the minds of the mass market (brainwashed by Steve Jobs).
When the Mac came out in 1984, this killed sales of the C64.
Now, the iPhone is out, will it kill sales of the Treo?
Treo = c64
iPhone = the first mac.

Do you see any similarities of Palm and Commodore?
Both companies had loyal customers and a fanbase as well as huge amounts of software. We keep hearing on the internet about this Amiga OS 4.0 from Amiga Inc (www.amiga.com), but it never made it to market, just as Palm keeps mentioning about Cobalt Palm OS 6.0 or this future Palm OS Linux that will arrive before 2010. I hope Tux the Penguin will be the savior.

Garnet is equivalent to Amiga OS 3.5 (current version of Amiga OS)
It works now, but its foundation is about to crack.

Yet, there were many failures and false promises.
Just look at last week with the Foleo cancellation.
The latter days of Amiga used to be like this.

Do you feel that Palm will eventually become the next commodore
or the Book entails: The Rise and Fall of Commodore (google it)
or The Rise and Fall of Palm Inc.?

Is Palm going the way of Commodore? Will this Palm OS II
catch up with Mac OS X embedded (iPhone), Symbian, and Windows Mobile?

Will the Palm Community stick together like good old times?

There used to be many people saying that Palm is like Apple with the POS5<=>Mac OS9; POS II<=>Mac OS X; Linux<=>Free BSD... analogies.

Now here comes the Amiga analogy :D

Both have their points, yet we'll only see the result in the future. What I think is interesting here is that 2 years ago, a lot of people here are thinking that Palm would soon be reborn and successful, thus the Apple analogy; 2 years later, when Palm "was supposed to be successful again", many people are thinking Palm is dying, thus the Amiga analogy.

Palm fans are losing faith.

When I got my Pilot 1000 in 1996, my first thought about the UI was that it looked Apple-like. The font, the way the menus drop down, etc. reminded me of the Apple IIc.

Well, there are certainly similarities between Palm and Amiga in the sense that in both cases mis-management has seen both lose their once strong position.

I was a huge Amiga advocate, and there were always rumours of a come back with a new product or OS and nothing ever eventuated. I hope Palm doesn't go down the same route but it seems Amiga and Palm (now) simply aren't willing to listen to any of their customers.
