View Full Version : NetSkinner

This freeware application is pretty simple, but effectively. Essentially, it replaces the graphics of your Palm's web browser (6 currently supported) with that of a skin. Enjoy!

The current browsers supported are Blazer, NetFront, nWeb, Universe, WebPro, and Xiino.

I literally just finished getting the bugs out, so try and bear with all the FileFront download links. I'll have actual webpage up in a few days.

NetSkinner v1.0: http://files.filefront.com/NetSkinner+v10zip/;8466894;/fileinfo.html

NetSkinner SDKs: http://files.filefront.com/NetSkinner+SDKszip/;8466907;/fileinfo.html

Currently there have only been 2 user-created skins:

FireFront - A NetFront skinned based on Firefox 2.0 [link removed do to a bug]

HighRes Xiino (http://files.filefront.com/HighRes+Xiinoprc/;8466983;/fileinfo.html) - A high-resolution version of Xiino's default skin

And in case you want to revert to the original skins of the web browsers, skin files containing the classic skins can be found at [link removed due to a bug]

Feel free to make you own skins and share 'em. Feedback is welcomed.

Lol, unfortunately, it may have been too soon. I have removed the FireFront link for the time being, as well as the Original skins zip file as both those seem to have problems. However, the HighRes Xiino works beautifully.

EDIT: cms, in the next update I'll try to add AvantGo support

Unfortunately this is why he took down firefront....

But Im glad to see that the program can actualy skin browsers, I am very happy with outcome (and will be even more happy when it gets fixed :D )

I assume that using an application like SkinUI will skin the webpages you visit (i.e., the buttons on forms)?

Skinning the browser is a cool idea :)

Once Jason Robitaille finds a workaround for the pilrc bug, I *should* release the skin shortly after (I've used pilrc before, so it *should* be easy to port to the correct format).

Updated NetSkinner to 1.1:
-Added AvantGo support
-Added icon skinning support
-Fixed compatibility problems with Blazer and NetFront

Until the webpage for NetSkinner is up on my website, here are the temp download links:

NetSkinner v1.1 - Download (http://files.filefront.com/NetSkinner+v11zip/;8479334;/fileinfo.html)

FireFront (http://files.filefront.com/FireFrontprc/;8479389;/fileinfo.html) - Firefox 2.0 inspired NetFront skin

HighRes Xiino (http://files.filefront.com/HighRes+Xiinoprc/;8466983;/fileinfo.html) - A high-resolution version of Xiino's default skin

Original skins (to revert to original settings/graphics) can be downloaded here (http://files.filefront.com/Original+Skinszip/;8479395;/fileinfo.html).

The SDKs pack (updated) can be downloaded here (http://files.filefront.com/NetSkinner+SDKszip/;8479411;/fileinfo.html).

I have 2 questions:

Is anyone working on a skin for AvantGo? I have no experience, so don't ask me.

I believe the purpose of NetSkinner is to change any built in graphics in the supported browsers. Anything else? Not that that's not enough to make it cool.

HiRes
09-04-2007, 07:24 PM
So it's only capable of skinning Netfront if its in RAM not ROM? I have Netfront in the ROM and it's telling me to move it to RAM before it can be skinned. :?

BrentDC
09-04-2007, 07:33 PM
Yes, ROM-based browsers can't be skinned as they are read-only. You would have to copy it from ROM to RAM. The NetSkinner app actually changes the app, and thus this why programs have to be RAM-resident.

I skinned blazer. Now everytime I try to start blazer I get a white screen and I need to do a pin reset. I've tried waiting a while, hoping that it's just blazer's slow startup, but no go. Any idea what's happening? Could it be some conflict with the ROM and RAM version? In netskinner it seemed to skin it okay.

BrentDC
09-06-2007, 10:28 AM
@PCQ

Yes it is "skinnable", in fact any image you see in any application is easily changable. I originally changed that to a loading circular thingy like in FireFox, but Blazer doesn't call that resource real fast, so it didn't look good (and was hard to see). I ended up going back to the default.

@cyberdude

Try warm-reseting your device, and launch Blazer after (while still being warm reseted), and tell me what happens.

How did you copy over Blazer? Did you use RExplorer? That's how I did it - and just the one Blazer file (~492k IIRC) in ROM ->copy to RAM. We use sooo many of the same apps and this skin works great on my device - I'm surprised it's not working on yours

@BrentDC - thanks for the information :) I think you made the right choice about not skinning the spinny globe thing if Blazer isn't going to play nice. ;)

I skinned netfront and blazer and everything works fine. looks greta, also, thx!

As someone somewehre stated that netskinner actually changes the program file I guessed itīs OK to delete netskinner and the skin file after the skin has been applied and I guessed right. As for returning to the original skin I guess itīs fine to just delete the RAM copy of blazer and use the (unskinned) ROM copy, right? (This doesnīt apply to netfront, of course, which has to be re-installed or skinned using the "original skin").

BrentDC
09-06-2007, 10:46 AM
It's not Blazer, or NetSkinner, it's something else. Have you installed any non-NVFS aware stuff lately?

BrentDC
09-06-2007, 10:51 AM
@juggernaut#2

Yes, Netskinner actually changes these Web Browsers resource files, so you can delete the themes and NetSkinner after if you like. Deleting the RAM copy of Blazer will make your palm call the ROM one, so that's a good way to un-skin. NetFront would have to be reinstalled, or skinned to the original to go back :)

cyberdude
09-06-2007, 10:56 AM
It's not Blazer, or NetSkinner, it's something else. Have you installed any non-NVFS aware stuff lately?
To be perfectly honest I have a lot of junk on my TX and I'm not sure what is and is not NVFS aware. I know I've got a least one app that is a problem (although I don't know which app it is) because Palm Internals crashes on me when I tap notifications. Unfortunately that doesn't tell me anything. I've tried everything I can think of with the exception of reinstalling everything from scratch. I don't particulary want to do that, since I've got about 65mb of apps and dbs installed (not counting stuff on card).

Any suggestions?

I thought that the ROM copy of Blazer was working - I'll have to check that.

cyberdude
09-06-2007, 11:03 AM
When I launched the RAM copy of blazer, my DIA popped up and then it froze. I deleted the RAM copy using RE and refreshed my launcher and launched the ROM copy of Blazer. The DIA did not come up and the TX is now frozen - I'll wait a little longer before I do a reset.

Anything I installed recently was from this board or updates I got through trackerdog.

BrentDC
09-06-2007, 11:06 AM
Well... that's a tough one. Blazer is really finicky about the DBCache because it uses so much of it. But if that was the problem, I'd expect a crash not a freeze/not load. I don't think it is a NetSkinner problem at all because if it was, the problem would persist even after a warm-reset. Tell you what, go to Resco Explorer, and export your applications list to the memo pad, then paste here.

Does flushing the DBCache cause a reset? A lot of times flushing the DBCache when you have a non-NVFS aware app installed will cause a reset, this could tell us if this is the problem. Although it might also brick your device....

LOL No I use Offlush 2.0 and it works very well. No crash after a flush.

Note that after moving the last four of the ones you suggested, blazer started okay.

Those were:

Crash (crash pro which I've had on my device since I got it)
Fixfield (Alex Pruss's)
folder (app from old device to move things synced to launcher directory on card to proper directory)
Offdisc (This software and its source code is in the Public Domain.
Use at your own risk. OffDisc disconnects your network connection every time the power button is pressed. This fixes a problem on some Treos that allows them to maintain a connection and drain the battery even though they appear to be turned off. by shsmith of 1src)

Haven't tried that yet. I just did a reset after copying crash pro and fixfield back to my device and blazer didn't work so I deleted fixfield (the overlay file as well) and reset again. Instead of immediately resetting it flashed a bunch of stuff - what looked like a calculator screen then went black. I then did a pin reset and it did reset and I got a security screen - security should have been disabled! Luckily I had a hint in there so I knew what the password was. Now I just tried starting blazer with only crash pro of the 4 back on the system. It looks like it is frozen again. I'll try resetting, taking crash pro off and resetting again.

It is definitely Crash Pro. But I've been using this since I got my TX and Blazer has worked (although I last used it a couple of days ago).

So with Crash Pro gone Blazer works, and no Palm Internals crashing?

Now I'm really perplexed. All this time I've been playing with Blazer in ROM and it didn't work until I deleted Crash Pro. I copied Blazer to RAM and started it and white screen. Whether I start it from my launcher or from RE by going to the RAM section and tapping on blazer. When I warm reset it shows up skinned - is that the ROM or RAM version?

Palm Internals still crashes when I tap Notif.

If it shows up skinned, it is the RAM. The palm os will execute the RAM version if it's there, and if not the ROM one.

If PI is still crashing, you still have a problem....

Yeah well ....

Blazer is now working! I don't know why. I'm going to try to put my entries back into my UC list one at a time and see what happens. If everything is okay I'll put Crash back on and see if I can keep it working. I have a feeling that even though it started working after I took CP off, it isn't CP, but rather something else it is conflicting with.

Anyway the CrystalFox skin looks great!!!!!!

Hi CyberDude! I just tried launching skinned Blazer with OffDisc & FixField installed & CrashPro 2.28 enabled --> No problem. You must have some other issue and crash pro is kinda catching it but locking up instead. You might try to delete your Blazer cache file - I was getting locked up's for awhile (although at a different time) involving Blazer. Deleting the cache helped and made it so a flush didn't occur everytime I used Blazer... Something was corrupted in there.

I don't use Crash Pro, but doesn't it have some sort of "custom" reset screen before the actual reset? Maybe it locks up when initializing that, so.... does that even make sense?

Iīm glad my tip got you further even if you donīt seem to be running smoothly yet ... but keep trying, itīll help :)
Since I do use a lot of the ones you have and am running smoothly I might be able to give you some hints concerning those you listed:

BackOff!
Bdicty
NoAlarmsEN
RescoNews
Screenshot5
PowerBright !LPThese I donīt know about.

DisplayManager !LP
NVBackup
OffFlush
SkinDIA!
SecurityPnl-scr1 !P
Showbattery !P
YAHM !PThese I am running as well without any problems (assumed that we have the same versions, but Iīd suppose youīre using the latest of all of them), except for OffFlush of which I think I remember you use v2.0, whereas I use v1.0.

Time Logger !
UDMH !
AutoOffExt !LP
LauncherX !LP (locked by rlock)
TextPlus !LP (locked by rlock) - this came with D2G 10
Crash !P
Fixfield !P
Folder !P
OffDisc !P
Is TimeLogger the one from ResponsiveSoftware (the best time&billing soft around)? If so, I really have no clue why this would be requiring a notification because it does no background processing at all. At least the one I use does not use notifīs and does not cause any problems as well.
AutoOffExt did not work on my device which might be due to some other software I use (HandyAid, i.e.). LauncherX does not need to be locked.

I donīt know anything about UDMH, but that would be dmitryīs part anyway. OffDisc did cause problems when you do a flush while a connection is up (which i.e. happens when switching browsers), thatīs why I took it off (since it was written for treoīs it does not actually help on a TX, since just turning it off will do the same, something you obviously wouldnīt like to do with a treo). Crash (all versions from 2.24 up) and TextPlus turned out to render my device unstable, thatīs why I took them off. Instead of Crash you might consider using ResetDoctor which does have a reset log, too. Donīt know about Folder.

FixField is a special candidate. I do suspect it - together with CenterMenu which i am missing in your list - to be the cause of severe blazer crashes when putting the stylus into a web-based text field, i.e. when trying to do a quick reply on 1src mobile. But I have not been able to confirm and track that (thatīs why I didnīt ask alex about it). With "severe" i mean it does not just crash and reset, but will keep on crashing until I do a PAGE-UP-reset and a normal reset afterwards.

So one last tip: When moving suspicious apps (and at the beginning all apps are suspicious until proved not to be) donīt forget the panels.

This is the RNS software. it logs what apps are run and for how long. I originally got it to trouble shoot, but found that it gives very little valuable information.
AutoOffExt did not work on my device which might be due to some other software I use (HandyAid, i.e.). LauncherX does not need to be locked.
LX doesn't need to be locked? I was having some problems with it and locking it was one suggestion.

Unfortunately, Reset Doctor, which I also have, although it has a reset log, is virtually useless. The log either says it is a fatal error or not. It doesn't have near the amount of info that Crash pro has. I can't understand why Blazer has been working fine with crash Pro until now. I haven't updated it since 8/8/07 and I've used Blazer at least a couple of times since then.

Donīt know about Folder.
I really had this for ebooks (moved them from the launcher directory to the books directory after a hotsync), since I don't hotsync my ebooks the same way anymore I removed this.

My list didn't include panls. I used Final to put a bunch of stuff in prefs.

CyberDude, here is a list of Blazer files to delete from RAM:
Blazer BF-History
Blazer CacheHistory
Blazer Cookies
Blazer Field Autofill
Blazer Find Autofill
Blazer URL Autofill

**Don't delete your Bookmarks file**

Sorry I didn't have the list handy when I posted last evening. Also, note that most of these files will be recreated as soon as you launch Blazer for the first time and you'll have to login into sites the first time you visit.

I really don't think you're actually having a problem with CrashPro itself - it's just that CrashPro is bringing to light a different problem. I think it's locking up when trying to launch the "Crash Image" because launching Blazer is causing a problem.

Thanks. I tried launching Blazer but it froze I then deleted these files and it worked!!! It seems to be working now although I've hesitated to put crash pro back on. CP is one of my favorite troubleshooting tools. I would not get nearly as much info about crashed apps without it.

Yay!! :D:D I'm glad it worked - that means one of your Blazer files was corrupted. So can you skin Blazer now?

I understand what you mean about being leary of CP... To be honest, I bought it and have it installed but only enable it anymore when I'm beta testing or trying out new software or trying to specifically hunt down a problem. Otherwise, I disable it. :)

Yeah I skinned Blazer - love it! That's a good idea about CP. I think I'll try that and see what happens. If it is indeed something else causing CP to invoke then having it disabled should circumvent that.

Hi all,

Just wanted to let everyone know the NetSkinner webpage is now online. The official NetSkinner page is at http://canuck-software.ca/netskinner.html

I've also set up a page for all of the skins at http://canuck-software.ca/netskins.html

hehe, old pilrc bug -> messing up endianness on 16-bit bitmaps

It's fixed in the pilrc cvs, but we haven't released the fixed binaries.
