View Full Version : Terminal Server client for Palm OS5?

I have an NX70V - that means that I can get an 802.11b card to give me wireless access to the Internet.

That would give me handheld access to all sorts of applications through Windows Terminal Server via an 802.11b base unit, IF the Internet Browser for Palm OS5 has an equivalent of the ActiveX control needed for Terminal Services Client from Microsoft.

Without it, Palm PDAs are restricted to on-board use, remote e-mail, and <>ml applictions through the browser...with a Terminal Services client, all 100,000 Windows applications can be used on the PDA.

Yes, the PocketPCs have a Terminal Services client. But I spent a lot already for the Sony NV70 (which I dearly love)...

Does anyone know whether there is one for Palm OS5, whether it is being developed (or is plain not do-able)? and how I can get an answer?

Thanks

AFAIK its only possible with the Terminal Server client running on a PC then using PalmVNC or WinHand to connect from the Palm to the PC ...

I could be wrong though ... I don't see any technical reason why it wouldn't be possible ...

What would be nice though is to have an X server for Palm, then the 1,000,000's of Linux/Unix apps would also be available :D

That may well be easier ... I'm pretty sure all the stuff needed to get an X server running is opensource as is enough graphical stuff to work on Palm (since, AFAIK, the PalmVNC client is opensource), it's just a (non-trivial) matter of getting it together to work ... I'm not sure what the licencing situation is with terminal server clients nor do I know the amount of developer info available to actually write one ...

What would also be cool is to have a Citrix client running on PalmOS. Citrix provides way better application based terminal services than the stock TS by Microsoft.

I've actually put this question to a Citrix development team manager in a Citrix seminar and was told that the PalmOS based dragonball processors are not capable of handling the workload required.

He's also told me that with the advent of RISC based processors, Citrix "MAYBE" looking into writing a PALMOS based Citrix client.

Since Citrix makes a living by the continuing good will of Microsoft, I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting for this to happen ;)

Guess we're stuck with PalmVNC & WINHAND for the moment.

Sorry, there are Terminal Server (Remote Desktop) clients for a number of computers: Windows boxes (Win95 and up), Macs, Pocket PCs and even Linux boxes.
The Palm/CLIE platform is not one of them.

The open source Linux version could be ported - but I doubt it is worth the effort.

The official version must come from Microsoft (or someone who signs a licence agreement with Microsoft) -- so don't hold your breath.

You can use VNC directly. Ie. run the VNC server on your main computer and run PalmVNC on the CLIE.

Assuming you can install software on your computer/server, this offers a similar alternative to Terminal Services.

Raybot suggestion is to use both VNC and Terminal Services together - also possible but the extra middle-man is not necessary.

I actually called Citrix and got it might be possibly considered for development. Won't really help you if you have windows box though because windows uses RDP while citrix is using ICA. The citrix client kills palm vnc. The scaling is the greatest part. The only thing I envy of HPC/PPC users.
