View Full Version : My own MP4 Woes

I've hunted through several different threads on this forum all saying much the same thing and much of a different thing. I've tried many different permutationns and have still been unable to get an MP4 file to play on my UX50.
My most recent activity was as follows - install Full Media Player on MS, copy MP4 codecs to RAM using Palm Insider Pro, locate MP4 files in MPROOT/100MNV01 and still get a "file not found error".
I play MP4 files on my Sony Ericsson P900 so am embedded in the format and use a great utility called mpegable for converting them to my own specification, so I am determined to solve this problem. Could someone come up with a definitive walkthrough or similar that leaves nothing ambiguous? Thank you.

1. FMP does not have to be on the Memory Stick but I don't think it's a problem if it is.
2. Copy mp4 codecs to RAM. I used McFile I think.
3. Make sure mp4 is encoded for PSP. There are lots of kinds of mp4 files out there. MP4 files encoded for ipod need to be reencoded. I use ffmpeg to encode by following jamerican's instructions.
4. mp4 files can be stored in /MOVIES or in /MP_ROOT/100MNV01 for FMP to find them. I have had problems with mp4 files with odd filenames or long filenames. Keep them short and leave out any unusual characters.

just install TCPMP. it will play everything you throw at it.

Thank you very much :) I've now got TCPMP working beautifully on my UX50 plus the AAC plugin :) Last question on the subject - can anyone recommend some settings for bitrate, framerate, audio kbps etc for best viewing on a UX50? I'm off for a hunt through the forum just now on the subject.

Drat! :( Trying to open a VOB or mpg2 file in MPEGable is now crashing it every time, I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. I can rename my *.vob files to *.mpg files and get them to play in Windows Media Player but I don't know if this is the definitive answer about whether I have the right codecs or not. To be honest I'm very uneducated in the video departments, does anyone have any suggestions about where I should look with this issue as I don't want to add another layer of conversion in down to mpg1 (which doesn't crash MPEGable)? Thanks.

video need to be encoded with 480x320, 23-25 fps, 256-768 kbps. keep the audio 32-44 khz, 32-128 kbps mono/joint stereo.
these will playback just fine, it's up to you to decide the quality vs. size.

Much obliged :)

Some background on my mpegable trouble. It functioned properly with files extracted from DVD using SmartRipper. This was on a previous "build" of my VAIO. I have since erased all data and reinstalled the OS.
