Okay.. first My Disclaimer:
I got my Clie SJ-20 for Christmas from my In-laws and It's never further than arms length from me 24/7. This is my first PDA and I would label myself as yet a Newbie.

Now... Seeing as it's only an SJ-20, I don't get the nice fancy color graphics/pictures and so the draw/desire for the nice backgrounds offered in YiShow don't interest me. (Note: Sure it interests me, but without color I don't even know if YiShow would be worth installing/owning).

These are my goals:

1. After buying Memory Stick-> Move Jpgs off desktop onto memory stick. (Question: Moving a 48kb sized jpg off my desktop to the memory stick can be kept at the same 48kb file right? I don't need to convert it to the standard clie format do I if I use an image viewer program other than PhotoStand?)

2. Move as many apps off my RAM as possible, and preferrably keep them on MS. (Including BibleReader and BibleVersion files, AvantGo, small/minor games).

Questions:
Keeping in mind I have an SJ-20 and my goals above...

1. Is YiShow suggested for my use? Or will AcidImage offer smaller graphics file storage on my MS? YiShow has a lot of background and OS type stuff on it.. will that be useful on a wimpy little SJ-20?

2. Is LauncherX neccessary/recommended for me to make shortcuts on the apps I want to run off from MS?

3. Can I run AcidImage off MS if I have made a shortcut with LauncherX for it?

4. HandStory...
This app is a Web Clipper, Image Viewer, Doc Viewer, Ebook Reader and Menu Program. Problem is, it can't zoom in on pictures.
A big memory hog though is Avangto, does HandStory ((Replace)) Avangto (do the same thing)?
By Menu Program, does this mean I use HandStory to run other programs like BibleReader (which I can keep on MS)?
How is HandStory's image viewing compared to AcidImage?

My Goal:
Have as small as possible sized jpgs on my MS, an image viewer (AcidImage or HandStory), the ability to run apps off MS without loading up RAM all the time with the apps, and trying to control the size of AvantGo in my RAM.

Any Help?

Don't think I am real smart.. explain it in newbie talk if you respond please. I've been researching YiShow and Zlauncher and LauncherX and AcidImage and HandStory, etc for a while now, but most of the talk goes over my head. I am worried about forking out money (in short supply) and ending up with apps that don't work (only SJ-20) on my system.

Thanks!

1) Depends on what you want your launcher to do. YiShow does image viewing, including jpgs. In general, launchers like YiShow and ZLauncher are designed for color devices, though they work just fine in gray scale. That might be something to weigh. Most third-party launchers add a great deal of capability, and I wouldn't be without one. You need to try a bunch and see which one best suits your needs.

2) Absolutely not required. Most launchers don't use shortcuts unless they support launching programs that are not in the /Palm/Launcher/ directory of the stick. I don't use LauncherX, but I'd be surprised if they used shortcuts other than as I mentioned here. In any event, any reputable launcher should find apps in the default Launcher directory on the stick w/o gimicks.

3) Yes, you can run it off the stick. No, shortcuts are not required. Again, I don't use LauncherX and can't speak specifically for it.

4) HandStory will replace Avantgo very nicely. I changed over to HandStory and haven't looked back. HS can save clips, etc., directly to the card and then copy them to its own directory when launched. Very slick and reliable. To be fair, you should also take a look at iSilo which, although it doesn't do everything HandStory does, its doc view and handling of rich text is better. HandStory is NOT a launcher and will not "run" other programs. I don't use AcidImage, but I like HandStory's image viewer well enough to stop using Fireviewer.

I recommend that you spend some time reading my and spradlinb's (http://launchplug.com/) websites, as these will give you some basic knowledge in what you are trying to accomplish. Any launcher, including the built-in one, will enable you to run as many apps as you can fit on your card. I'd personally recommend HandStory for an Avantgo replacement. I wrote a review of it on PDA Avenue (http://www.pdaavenue.com/) you may with to read, and I expect a review of YiShow to be there shortly.

I just got a review of YiShow up this afternoon at PDA Avenue. However, I have a HiRes colour device so I can't really comment on a B/W, though I know it does support it.

shortcuts are required for programs that temporarily quit. ie, handmap, loads the main program, then loads the viewer to load the map.

unless you create the shortcut to handmap, the viewer has nowhere to return to when you click the home icon. ie programs on memstick w/o shortcuts won't show up on mcphling history either.

LauncherX allows the creation of shortcut/stub's that can HotSync apps on the memory stick.

For image viewing only, Acid Image is tops.

Most apps have a trial period of 15-30 days, so you can check them out. Palmgear is a great place to search and download trial apps, but I don't buy from them unless absolutely necessary. The reason, is non-existant customer service.

www.palmgear.com (http://www.palmgear.com)

www.launchplug.com (http://www.launchplug.com) spradlinb's website as Tanker Bob states is a good place to go.
