View Full Version : ShowBattery stopped working?

I have been using showbattery for a while and all was well.
Most recently; however, I noticed that it stopped updating. For instance, I will have charged the TX and unplugged, but showbattery still shows the charging symbol. Or, it shows the "less than full" symbol, though the pop up TX panel states 100 % charge.
This happened about the same time I started toggling status bar on/off; so, a lot of the time, ShowBattery is not even visible - -could that be messing it up?

Does it update when you switch the screen orientation (Portrait<-->Landscape<-->Portrait)?

I dunno. I took it off my Palm, because I got disappointed. It would update if I turned it on/off from the prefs menu.

It works on my TX perfectly, except when I use something that takes the statusbar off-screen (some games). When I flip the orientation, it will update and keep working fine. Don't know if this helps...

OK, I see the same behavior. So, why does it get confused when you remove the status bar off the screen?

maybe it is a bug from the skin itself. Same images for different status, just a thought...

It shouldn't be getting confused... If I hide the status bar for a period of time, ShowBattery will not update while it's hidden. But whenever I unhide the status bar, then ShowBattery will update eventually (it does take a few minutes to show up). If yours is not updating even after a few minutes then it could be a bug in your stat bar skin. I'm using FerdFerd's skin. What skin are you using?
I think this is because ShowBattery doesn't update constantly? But checks every few minutes. I see similar behavior whenever I charge - in that ShowBattery has a slight lag before showning the updated battery state. If you think about it, just checking every few minutes would use less battery life than checking constantly - and that's a good thing :D

I think this is because ShowBattery doesn't update constantly? But checks every few minutes.I remember Alex Pruss mentioning during development that ShowBattery only updates periodically. I can't remember the interval between updates. There certainly is a delay of some time on mine before it catches up with the real state of the battery. I only ever notice this when I've just unplugged it from the charger. Otherwise, the changes in battery state are gradual enough not to notice the lag.
I don't generally hide the status bar, so I can't comment on whether ShowBattery stops updating when it isn't displayed. But it might, and that would explain why it seems to be inaccurate when it reappears.

Hmmm... When I unplug the device ShowBattery updates instantly.... And when I play with PalmInternals, SB shows up as registered for connecter attached/disattached notifications....
BTW, I use MetaView's version.

The "Charging indicator (eg: lightning bolt) changes right away when I plug in/unplug my TX but it can take a few moments for the actual level of charge in the battery icon to update. This is also true of the stock Palm battery charge indicator (ie: you know that your charge is 100% but the indicator still says <100% and then slowly trickles up to 100% even though it's not plugged in anymore), so I see no reason why it would be different in ShowBattery. I too use Metaview's version.

I did an experiment to see what happens to ShowBattery when the status bar is hidden. Starting from about 60% charge I kept my TX on until it dropped to about 20% charge. I kept the status bar hidden. At the end of the test period, I raised the status bar. ShowBattery initially indicated that the battery charge had not declined from the starting state. About 10 seconds later ShowBattery updated to show the real charge state.
I forgot to time the period to refresh exactly, but I began to count off the time eight seconds before it refreshed, and I started countining a little bit after I raised the status bar.
In short, it seems ShowBattery does not update while the status bar is hidden. And the delay between updates is something like 10-15 seconds.

I tried it as well with my TX. It definitely does not update while the status bar is hidden. However, for me, it did not update even after the status bar was visible. I waited for about a minute. However, if I toggled screen orientation between portrait/landscape then it would update.
