View Full Version : For Dmitry: FastDIA won't install

Dmitry and anyone else who might know,
I've tried to install the TX file for FastDIA repeatedly, but it keeps giving me the error message in Hotsync that it is an "Invalid handheld file" and deleting it from the installation, although I always have to reset my TX afterward nevertheless. I am running other OS extenders, such as TX Tweak and McPhling; are there known incompatibilities with those programs and FastDIA, or some non-standard installation methods somewhere? Thanks. {ProfJonathan}

Most folks who've had this trouble have been able to install by copying the application from their SD card to main memory with Resco Explorer, then doing a soft reset. FileZ doesn't seem to work for those of us who have had this trouble (including me). If you poke around, you will find a discussion of all this. One user who isn't a Resco Explorer user downloaded the trial just to install FastDIA.
I don't personally understand why this is happening, but you aren't alone.

If you are going to go the RE route, make sure to use the "Install to Ram" option, as the other methods will not work. I personally stopped using FastDIA because one time I had to do a hard-reset (unrelated), and restoring the FastDIA file caused my device to go into a reset loop (I figure that since most file managers can't copy that to RAM, then when NVBackup tried to restore it, it failed which I think caused the reset loop. Who knows what happens when that resource is unavailable to the OS, because Dmitry did say it was a rewrite.)
I believe that I installed it using uniCMD and by using "install to ram" instead of copy

I am curious as to how you removed 'FastDIA' after the install. I cannot find it as a PRC. I am guessing that it rewrites some code? Do you know what I need to restore?
Your help is appreciated.

Don't quote this, as you can see I uninstalled FastDIA more than a month ago, but I *think* I did this: as Dmitry said in its original thread (search DIA Up, DIA Down, DIA Up, DIA Down) this is a code rewrite, so it rewrites something you already have. So I *think* I set the StatusBarLib file to recyclable, and then soft-reset. Remember don't quote it :)

@BrentDC~ Thanks. I found the thread. I searched on Google first and did not find any specifics on how to remove FastDIA. I should have known to look here first! I found it here (http://www.1src.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1000192&postcount=37) for anyone who is looking.
I will probably give it a try anyway (FastDIA that is), but I like to know how to remove something just in case. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

to install it, just copy to ram from car using your favorite file manager WHILE UDMH IS ENABLED

FWIW, I never, ever worry about having to remove an app after I've tried it because I just use NVBackup first, then try out the app & if I don't want to keep it - just restore!! :D That ensures that all of the files are gone and everything is back exactly where I left it.

I do the same as PCQ. I have about 14 backup sets in NVB labeled like "pre fastdia inst". If I have a problem I just restore.

I do the same as PCQ and CD, but I used FastDIA for a few weeks, so doing a rollback that far was not-optimal. Glad I was helpful (for once anyway :p )

Yep, that did it. Thanks as always, Dmitry. {J}

Hi all~ I would have done a restore as well, but I was not sure which item to restore. Also I often change many things so a full restore would remove some I wanted to keep perhaps.
Anyway, I have been using FastDIA and I like its effect. Makes my notify ladden TX seem a bit zippier. Thanks Dmitry.
I love fast DIA
My palm is globaly set to run at 156mhz as opposed to 312
because of this, special effects like the sliding DIA make it slow down.

Besides for OS5 only apps, games, and web browsers, most of the other apps that are on my Palm TX run smoothly on my Palm m100.
If the palm m100 can run apps quickly with only 16mhz, Surely you dont need to waste 312mhz of processing power to run them on the PalmTX.
Since Im only using half the electricity that the palm TX normaly supplies to proccessing, and as a result Im getting better battery life.

I agree that one probably does not need 312 mhz to run most programs. However, what really annoys me is that start up lag, at least 1 to 2 sec for most programs and way more for things like VersaMail and Blazer. This is where FastDIA helps. But surely, Palm should be able to do better than that!

That is not a CPU slowness problem though, it is a amount of free DbCache problem. If you flush the Cache before you launch one of these large apps, they will boot up faster (this is no way a solution, as it is just differing the time to when you flush, but it proves it's a Cache problem).

Yes, I am aware of that from previous threads. I am just annoyed that here you have a PDA with way more than enough clock speed to handle most apps, but with such immature memory management scheme.... :( :(
Dimtry is supposed to come out with a paging file for the palm, which would fix alot of DB Cache problems.

I'm not a developer, but from what I've heard, the Memory Management on the PalmOS is awful. If a Freelance developer (i.e. Dmitry Grinberg), has fixed many bugs in the Mem Management with his apps, that doesn't really give you an warm feeling, does it?

Would it be like SharkCache for Lifedrive, kind of?

IDK, if im correct, sharkcache stores programs from the hardrive and locks it into Cache so it launches faster.
A paging file on a palm would be expanding the cache (a page file "emulates more db cache" making the cache load to a page file which is located on a card or ram, thus, crap load more of cache)
Think of it like pruss' cryptdrive app except it mounts more DB cache instead of a vertual drive
If im wrong, tell me plz

Today I've got to install fastDIA first time.
In my opinion, all issues when installing start because you are trying to overwrite a file that is placed on ROM (read only memory).
[Explanation of new way is temporarily "off-line" until dimitry gives an OK]

this will not work, stresm database does not split into resrouces right, it will just kill your DIA completely....

Hello dmitry,
As you can see on the above message, I have prudently "deleted" that explanation as of your response. It was very fast, thanks!! (Mmmm... are you working on christmas night?)
You are right, file database splits incorrectly and gains size. Sorry for the confusion. Surprisingly DIA kept working perfect - besides of the "white problem" only blank area.
I join the rest of people thanking you for all your great work, and encourage you to continue.

Hello again, dmitry,
Again thank you for all this stuff.
Could I ask one thing really interesting for both? (as programmers)
If I install for example "FileZ" and then install again the same program but with a modified new name like "FileX" (binary-edit first bytes of file)... as expected I get two programs on my palm, okay, with different names.
However if I get an exact copy of my original StatusBarLib, which is the same as your great work of fastDIA (except for those magic 4 bytes), and then install it with a binary-modified name "StatusB4rLib", it will complain as of invalid file and delete inmediately.
So the problem is not a ROM file being overwritten or "shadowed", it is the file itself being discarded. But why?? unwanted??

Hrmm.. after installing this, my TX is crashing whenever I load the Applications menu. I have UDMH running but I can't pick the StatusBar file specifically. If there is no fix, how can I revert? I also couldn't find the correct file in NVBackup.
Edit: The described "Recyclable" trick only seems to be possible with Filez, not Resco Explorer. It still didn't seem to work for me. I tried manually copying over the file from ROM. The DIA seemed to revert to its animated pop-up but it still crashes if I try to view Applications.
