View Full Version : Screen Part of Clamshell Won't Close Properly, Paint Chipping

my clie is getting old fast- the back is all scratched, the paint on the camera has worn off in many places. The worst problem is that it has suddenly decided that the screen part of the clamshell will not automatically close all the way (I assume that all other NXs are like how mine has always been- at about a centimeter it shuts itself and the screen turns off- correct me if im wrong). Now there's about a 3 mm gap between the two parts of the clamshell. Has anyone had this problem, and more importantly has anyone been able to fix it?

I've been considering getting this one repaired/refurbished. is this possible? I don't want to upgrade until there's a T series or NX series of at least the 2nd generation of Palm OS 6, so I expect to keep my NX for quite a while. I don't have any need for a 400 mhz processor or more RAM, so I see no need to. I would just like to keep this one looking nice, running well, and the screen unblemished. Any suggestions for aesthetic refurbishment in the $100-$150 price range?

My NX suffers the same problem. It gets worse every month. I wish it looked new, but it really doesn't anymore. The only way to keep this design looking new I think is one of the many available cases. A long while ago, I started a thread about some paint chipping. Check it out at http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=776&highlight=philipv

If you find out anything else, let us know!

My clamshell is definitely not closing all the way, also a 3mm gap. The only place the paint is chipping is around the connector on the bottom, due to my pocket knife that the CLIE rests on when in my pocket.

My one is the same. The wear and tear made her terribly looking. But the spring or what ever it is works fine. Mine closes always the same.

Do you guys have cases? I'm waiting for my Bellagio to arrive. I'm hoping that keeping a case on will help prevent some of this wear and tear. I saw a display model at Best Buy that was all worn out around the hinge and camera. It concerned me a little but I bought one nonetheless.

Best buy has PDA holders that wreck the PDA.

I have a Piel Frama leather case. This will help a bit. But is no real protection. I don't like my Piel frama case anyway. Anybody has a Incase Design Flip case??

I always thought it crazy to buy a case for a clamshell pda. The only thing I can see it doing is eliminating scratches. But that's just me. In general I don't like PDA cases. I don't even like flip covers. I used the flip cover on my PalmIII for a while because I spent all that money on it. Then I popped it off and used it 2 years without and only got one scratch (my own fault).
When I bought my 710 I was the same way, started with the cover then got rid of it. I had no problems with it except a few minor cosmetic scratches.

Yeah these parts were dark and tougher against scratchens. The NX is tough as well against dropping on the ground or squeezing it in a car's door. But the finish accepts any scratch although the NX won't ever break apart..
As for the case I agree, a clamshell design should be fine alone added a belt clip..

I have the PEGA-CA80 sports case, which is really a pouch. I have my Gunmetal NX since December, and it still looks pretty good, even the original "Audio, Video, Communication" sticker on the front looks new.
I credit it to the case; a friend of mine here in Brazil has a silver NX, and he carries it without a case. His Clie shows the wear you are talking about. It has marks on both sides of the app buttons, it has scratches on the back, and the sticker on the front looks worn. His clamshell also feels looser than mine. I carry mine everyday, and he doesn´t.

I don't see how a case could protect against scratches next to the app buttons. Maybe he tries to open and twist to fast and is catching the edge of the display.

The only surface marks I have are due to the fact that I put the CLIE in my pocket on top of my pocket knife. So the area just above the comm port has flaked off. That's 100% my fault, and I'm not changing a thing *grin*

There is an old thread about this, see http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1557&highlight=marks

It seems that movement between the Clamshell and the bottom part causes marks near the app buttons. I think the case I am using minimized this.

I have the padded OEM case from Sony, it is a bit on the large side but after 6 months the NX looks as good as new (apart from the finger prints on the screen!)....

.............. I guess if it wasn't for the case wear and tear would be expected....... life is but one big compromise
