View Full Version : Why I like my TT more than the NX?

Since I have been a NX user for some time now, I just got my TT recently and would like to tell you my experience. Since all of us here are NX users, you might not have try using the TT yet. We all know there are many nice features on our NX so forget about that topic.. :)
I've been using both NX & TT and I found out that I am starting to like the TT more slowly. Why? Here are some reasons :
The sound output on the TT's speaker is much louder and clearer in most way... well, at least I am able to listen to MP3 loud enough than on my NX! On the TT, the stylus is also much comfortable to use unlike the slim NX's stylus. Third, it's lighter and smaller - nice to hold and great especially when reading ebooks. Forth, at least I can use keyboards like the one in the picture which is just great. Fifth, the 5-way-navi is excellent. Sixth, we are not stuck at using the build-in CF slot only for Sony's WL100 card.. which I think is just their monopoly thingie. Seventh, at least Palm don't introduce a new product every few months to make us consumers crazy! There's also Bluetooth build-in and not paying another $200USD for the Bluetooth MS!! Lastly, I managed to get better Tech Support @ Palm than Sony's which doesn't help at all!
Btw, this is just my personal opinion from my experience with sony products. If you have any comments, please feel free to post your suggestions. Your 2 cents will help me in some way to like the NX more... and I am not looking for a fight with anyone here.

I like the Tungsten too, but I love high res+ even more! If Palm would go to virtual graffiti, I think they would get a lot of us Clie users back!

Nah, I think I will keep the NX. Yup, I like the virtual graffiti and HighRes+! - especialy when play high res+ games like Billiards and Kickoo's Breakout.. :)

I like hardware buttons. My next pda will probably be a tungsten unless Sony releases a new t-series (or equivalent).

I will most likely give up my NR for the tungsten, but I will wait and see what the T models have coming.

Exactly my thought. The first thing I noticed in that picture is the difference between the sizes of the screen. I dont' think I could go back to a square screen. Now we just need to work on getting more apps to work in landscape mode.
I do like the TT a lot, and I was torn between the NX and the TT when my NR broke. I would have loved to have bluetooth built in. That is still something I expect to have in my next handheld. I also love how small the TT is... it feels so hightech being so small. But then again, just now I held my NX in my hand and realized that even it is very small when you consider everything these devices can do. My NX got passed around Latin class today and everyone gawked over it (senior in high school). They caught me reading a e-book and started assaulting me with questions. I won't say I minded... but it happens in every class.
Sorry, that got off topic. If someone decided to give me a TT, I sure wouldn't say no! I really wish I could afford both a NX and a TT, and I'm jealous that you can!

You guys like the picture I took? :) It's not edited in any way, just resized and added the watermark.
Well, at least there's a nice slim and portable keyboard on the TT I can type @ 70 words per minute without any problems.. and portable. After all, there are dozens more spaces in my Scott E-vest jacket.

Wow, can't say I've ever seen someone else who took (is taking) Latin! I had 3 years of Latin in High School, and even took the AP exam for it (a real killer, but I did well with a lot of extra studying). Of course, now that I work in an office with a bunch of Hispanics, I wish I had taken Spanish instead!
Back on topic...the NR and NX are definitely high on the eye candy factor. I love showing off photos and videos of my dogs!

Yea man, I went ahead and saved it to my image archive. I think it's very well taken.
I like the new stowaway, but I don't have anything to be wishing for when the PalmOS5 drivers are out for my Belkin keyboard. I hit 70wpm on it easy.

just a quick question.. what doesn't* feel high tech about holding the nx, with a camera that can do video and still, and play full lenth movies, and the multitude of other things?
I stood at the bar and made videos of my friends' band the only complaint the band had was that I wasn't connected to the internet to upload them immediately to their website..
I'm not trying to start anything.. just had to make sure the nx was mentioned as high tech as well.. it's the only palm device of it's kind as far as I'm concerned..

Lizard, I agree. I kinda changed tone mid-post there. That's why I made the comment about how it is amazing what any of these devices will do and they arn't the size of a briefcase.
But still, when I hold the TT in it's collapsed form, it feels almost like it is just a screen. It is a very compact device.

Haha, just to confuse people! But really, just for a change. He probably won't be there long. My cat (in the photo) is as big as my dog though, poor Taz is totally scared of him. I love all kinds of animals, even though I do the most with my dogs.

It's one of the reasons why I went for the Clie NX70V rather than the TT - because I prefer the virtual graffiti area! Shame really, as I'd much rather have a PDA which is slim.

I really wish they would make the black plastic area have touch sensitive areas for the 6 buttons palms normally have... I really miss just hitting the buttons when i need to jot a quick note... but I guess that would make it turn on all the time...

Melvin,
How did you get the colors of the LCD screens to look so "normal"? Usually they get all blue (or red) when the case looks good. Or the LCD is done right and then the case is blue or red.

Sony need to bring out a small OS5 device quick to keep my business:)

Hires+ is awesome. plus TT isn't much better than T or N series Clie's. why not just spend $200 or so and get one of those.
OcellNuri

Neither the T or N series have OS5 yet. I also feel like the 175mhz is a big step above 33mhz and 66mhz. And you know we all love Bluetooth! :D

Anyone here worked with computers long enough to remember the derrogatory term, "chiclet keyboard"? The keyboard is an embarassment. That style of keyboard got laughed out of the computer industry back in the early 80's.
Not that I can picture a better keyboard that fits in an area that small (thin), but I'd honestly rather not have it. I'd leave my NX in tablet mode at all times if I didn't loose the app/scroll buttons when I did that.
However, 320x450 usable is sexy enough that I've got an NX, even though I didn't bother with the camera. That single fact kept me from getting a TT. My HandEra 330 did 240x304(?) usable, and after that, I couldn't go back to a square screen, not even 320x320. Of course, now there's at least a hint of PalmOS5 competition on the horizon, from the iQue.

I am really psyched about the iQue 3600. I travel several days a week (I'm a pilot, if you couldn't tell by the username)
Since I'm always in a new town, having a handheld gps to get around would be sweet. Can't say I use the keyboard much on my NR, either. I'll miss the built in camera, but on the NR especially, its mostly a novelty - not good for decent pix. I can't wait to get my hands on an iQue... just to compare it. 32MB built in doesn't sound too bad either!

The secret is not to use Flash and get a 'proper' digital camera. :)All the pics ware taken using my Sony S70 Cybershot 3.3MP @ 1600x1200 and resized to 640x480.

Sorry to go off topic again...but just couldn't let this pass!
You must have spent time around the wrong kind of dogs (or their owners!) My dog is impeccably clean, hardly sheds at all, and never messes in the house. My cat however, regularly pukes up hairballs, and sheds like there's no tomorrow. Unlike my dog's hair, cat hair gets everywhere!
Of course, there's always those hairless Sphyx cats....

Is it just me, or doesn't it seem like a hires+ screen could fit on a nearly TT-like model?
However, considering palm didn't make any real built in support for hires+ in OS5, I'm not holding my breath for a Palm unit with Hires+.
It's gotten to the point where I can't buy anything other than Sony, because if I like something else, Sony will come out with a better alternative in two months.

Having compared an NX to a TT, this photo is deceiving. It appears as if something like Vaseline has been smeared on the NX's display. Not so in the real world.
MelvinTong
01-15-2003, 12:41 AM
Mr Thompson,
I noticed that too. That is because of the Brando Screen Protector I am using. The screen protector will help in making the screen non-reflective under bright lights. The picture is not edited in any way, and that is what my camera 'sees'.
Comparing both the NX and TT, I can confirm you that the NX screen is better. The dot-pitch on the NX is smaller and therefore the image is sharper. I think both NX and TT are great. The picture was not meant to be 'deceiving'.
No way I am going to put something like vaseline on my NX!
Mr. Thompson

Thanks Melvin. From your previous posts I was certain there was no conspiracy. I thought the discrepancy of screen resolution in the photo should be mentioned lest someone get the wrong idea.

Thanks Mr. Thompson. :)
Well guys, I wonder why Sony don't make their keyboard with LED like the one on Treo? It would be great if the LED can be turn on and off whenever we like. Yesterday night, while I was chatting in ICQ using my NX using graffiti, I can tell you that it's hell tyring. Too bad but I can't use the keyboard since I sleep with all the lights off.
Anyway, check out another pic I took. I called it the 3 Kings! :D

I like both the TT and the NX70. The NX is significantly faster for some tasks. Database filters on large databases (3000+ records) are completed by the NX70 in about half the time the TT takes. Large spreadsheet calculations are completed by the NX 70 is about half the time the TT takes also. For reference, the NX 70 completes the same database and spreadsheet tasks in about one quarter of the time a NR 70 took.

I was really tempted by the TT when it came out for the smaller size. But, I had been lusting after a hires+ device ever since I saw my first NR. I received my NX as a Christmas gift and it has been great, other than the small problem of filling up my 128ms with wideformat videos. I went used my old T665 the other night, I gave that to my wife, and the 320x320 square screen was driving me nuts at how "small" it seemed to be. I really doubt that I could get a TT now and get used to the "small" screen again.
Then again I don't mind the size of my NX, you can't even tell it is in my pocket without a case. And, even with my Vaja standard case it is bearly noticeable. Plus I think the battery lasts longer in the NX than the one in my 665 and seems to be better than the one in an acquaitances TT.
They are both great devices and I wish I could afford to have one of each but I will stick with the Sony because they like to push the envelope. But, I would really love it if Sony would reveal their API's for audio and CF development.
The 2 things that stop me from replacing my NX with a TT: the built in keyboard and the voice recording. Gotta have them both. If the upcoming Tungsten with the keyboard would have had the voice recording, I would have switched back. Love the formfactor. The smaller the better! My 2 cents.

Umm, the TT does have voice recording:

and the tungsten W has a keyboard.. although it's palm os 4....

I guess the point that bcoutlander is making is that Tungsten-T does not have a keyboard and Tungsten-W does not have voice recording. i.e no model has both.

Not to be picky but I don't prefer the TT over my NX because it lacks HR+. I think JoeT was the one looking for the keyboard and voice recording.

I'll never go back to a Palm hardware product unless they can innovate better than the rest. Right now Sony is far and away the most innovative product out there. I agree with the overall size of the TT being better, that's the one reason it was hard to say goodbye to my M505 but the feeling was short-lived since the NX70V is superior in all other ways to the Palm. I actually think the NX feels better in the hand, I like the narrow width and the CF slot protrusion seems perfectly cradled in my palm! I would not trade my NX for any other model out there except maybe the NZ! :)

Not that I would choose the Tungsten over a Clie, but while Tungsten W doesn't have a voice recorder, it does have Copytalk, so JoeT could compose an email via dictation and have it sent to himself or others.

Well, seeing as PalmSource announced an SDK (I don't know if it's available yet) for manipulating a software-driven grafitti area, I think you may be in for a bit of a surprise sometime this year. :)
Traditionally, Palm hasn't created APIs for anything that their own hardware didn't use. Splitting the hardware company off from the software company may have changed this, but it's still a good sign, as I'd like to see all of the OS5 320x480 PDAs software compatible with each other. They also need a jogwheel API, or to extend the 5-Way Navigator API to handle jogwheels better, IMO.

this is slightly off topic, but not enough to start a whole new thread.. I would not choose any pda over the clie NX. I have been more than happy with it since I got it. I have had no complaints. It is everything I expected it to be. The only thing I miss from my Visor Prism is the stylus.. It had a miniature screwdriver in one end that I used more times than I can tell you.. Other than that.. I love my nx, and wouldn't pick any palm hardware over it. I switched away from Palm when Handspring entered the market, and just recently (christmas) made the switch to Sony.. :)
Yup, it was me who wants both the keyboard and the voice recorder. Although sending yourself a voice email may be possible, I don't want to pay for online service, so I'm waiting for the Tungsten formfactor but with both keyboard and voice recording.
(BTW, love your signature quote. I try to live by that and the serenity prayer.)

I have been a loyal Palm user for a few years now, first was the Vx, then the M505 (terrible screen) then the TT. I liked the small size, but it feels heavy. I like the nav pad, but haven't found it all that helpful for my use. Liked the hidden graffiti area since I don't use it. Never had a need or desire to learn a new way to write. Hidden graffiti area is nice until you have to learn multiple programs so you don't have to open it to access the keyboard etc.
I have considered Sony in the past, but their constant innovation made me reluctant (gotta have the latest) to purchase as there is always a hot new on the way. So recently I joined the chorus of Palm TT users who are sick of Palm Solutions Group not delivering on anything they promise time and again.
The TT is supposed to play MP3's but it can't software is not available, and won't be until Real comes out with it. I know there are a few apps out in beta and such, but the sound is not right due to the down sampling issue (Palm again).
So I start to search the web for answers, review Sony NX60/70V and see what they offer. Check out sites to sell my old M505 (upgrade to 16MB RAM) and my new TT that I at least got a good price on.
This week I stopped at Best Buy where they don't have a clue about the PDA's at all. This was evident four months ago when i told them OS5 & ARM Processors were coming at they looked at me like I was nuts. Well they came and Best Buy didn't have it for weeks. Sorry Staples did.
I stopped into CompUSA and couldn't get much help on my lunch hour so I stopped again tonight and got help. I am not a Palm genius or claim to be, but I research (insert topic here) to death before purchase.
He was great helped, answered questions did some demo's I was ready to buy. My Palms are virtually sold, waiting to ship out and get my cash.
Bottom line from a TT user since it's release. I like the size, I like the HiRes I like the nav (pretty much). What I don't like is that palm can't/won't deliver as promised and my needs are now defined by audio/video with business apps tied.
Clie may not be smaller, but it feeels about the same in weight, and the screen kicks. The color is crisper, brighter and the larger display is nice. I haven't used MP3's before but looking to.
Sony will always innovate while Palm Solutions Group will continue to suffocate under their own useless management's weight.
I have moved to Sony and don't plan to look back. By the way Sony has stopped shipping NX series with OS5.0 since OS5.1 will be shipped on all new units. This is why I couldn't get one tonight. I will be PDA less for a month or so and it will be hard, but I will enjoy the Sony more when it comes. Oh and Palm Solutions Group doesn't have a clue when OS5.1 will ship.

I had a Tungsten for a few weeks and loved the form factor and the navigator pad. But the screen, although nice, didn't stand against my T665. So, for kicks I bought an NX. The difference between screens is very noticeable. All you have to do is download Colorize and change the screen to a Burgandy color and Wow, what a difference. The color is so much richer on the NX. So it came down to what I really wanted. I wanted an ARM Palm OS5 machine with a small form factor and a transflective screen. Unfortunately that doesn't exist right now so I had to choose between small form factor and the transflective screen. Placed the two screens together and compared photos. Placed both units in my pockets and compared size/weight. I chose the NX60 because:
CF landline modem
Much better screen
Excellent video playback
Faster with large files
The first company that releases a small OS5 machine with a transflective screen will have my money.
