I just received a TX back from warrantee - it is either new or refurbished, but is at least cosmetically new. The battery discharges faster than expected while the unit is off - from 100% to 80% overnight. The previous TX did not do that.

Is this a
defect
artifact of a new battery
result of some default factory setting ?

What if anything can I do about it?

Beam receive is off, no hacks installed, I have wifi and BT not yet configured

thanks

Try an in-cradle reset (plug in to charge, do soft reset, leave alone for 3-4 hours) to reset how the battery is charged.

my guess would be that if dump71's advice doesn't work then it's definitely the battery.

Just because you haven't yet configured the WiFi and BT doesn't necessarily mean that they are turned completely off. Verify that both are completely turned off/disabled.

A new TX (or battery) may take a few battery cycles to get to the point where it doesn't discharge so quickly, or seem to discharge so quickly. Let the battery drain down to a low percentage and then fully charge it. Do this a few times and it will probably keep a charge longer. If not, send it back.

Is this a defect artifact of a new battery result of some default factory setting ?I had the same problem for a long time. Almost drove me to pitch my TX. Then I finally found a msg in this forum where someone mentioned that there's a known bug in the security subsystem. Setting auto-lock to "After a preset delay" can cause symptoms like what you mentioned.

Try using a different setting (like "When power is off") for a few days and see if that makes any difference. If it does, give me a shout and I can point you to one option that allows using "After a preset delay" without the problem. (At least, it works for me...) :)

You could also grab a freeware utility called "Alarms" that shows things on you Palm that have registered with the OS to wake up the Palm. You might have enabled some timed operation that uses battery power and then forgotten about it. (Like a timed wireless hotsync or backup that uses Wifi. Due to Palm's foolish "Would you like to turn the radio on now?" popup, WiFi won't work *unattended* without AutoWifi installed and enabled. It'll just sit there and drain your battery...)

Good luck.

That feature is a mess! I was using after a preset delay, but had similar issues, so I switched to a preset time which behaves better, but I have to enter my password a few times a day to get in - in part due to the frequent resets. I hate to turn off security, but it seems to be the only way to eliminate a few annoyances that this feature causes. I understand that the Stay on while in cradle was apparently designed to shut off when the security is enabled, but I wish there was another option to tell it that when I say stay on, I mean it - regardless of my security setting since my palm is pretty safe when cradled on my desk at home.

I thought it might improve after a few cycles and I set it to no security to be sure. Still the same issue. Called Palm and they will exchange it. I suspect the actual cost of the hardware is quite low. If you ask someone with a Treo there's a good chance they've had warranty service for it.

How can I do an untattended wifi backup/hotsync? It sounds like a smart thing to do.

NVBackup has the option to back up via FTP. You can do this as long as you have your FTP service configured and your WiFi access point configured.

Automated hotsyncing can be done via a number of different apps that let you schedule events -- one of the more common is to schedule a hotsync. Of course, you need your computer to be turned on, and you need network hotsyncing enabled for that device.
