I assume the free versions are still free?

Also, what is the deal with the T|X version: free or not???

If I'm not mistaken, anyone seems to be able to download it for free :) I downloaded it yesterday, and they didn't ask any questions, just took me the download page. Many people are reporting trouble with this version on the Palm TX, but I haven't noticed these problems.

It's a Java Virtual Machine and not a Java Virtual Manager.

The reason I asked is because, iirc, the product page says that the T|X version is free but when you proceed to download, it claims it is a 6.95 charge. oh well, the t5 version works, imho

That didn't happen to me, I just followed a link to the product page (from an rss feed), hit the download button, and it downloaded. I did it via blazer so maybe I missed something, but still it did download. BTW it said it 1.xxMB when it was really 1x.xxMB.

Do you think this will work on the clie devices?

People have said it's quicker/more stable.. I honestly don't think that's the case. It's just a sorely needed update, you can now navigate menu commands using the d-pad, on the 700+ series devices the Home & Phone buttons now work (in that they exit Opera), the Alt key on those devices now also brings up the virtual keyboard so you can copy/paste.

Probably more, but it just went from 5.7.1 to 5.7.2 so I wouldn't expect all that much.

Edit: from treocentral:
