Hi,
I am just about ready to get an SJ33 but wondered whether it slows down when playing MP3 in background?

I've never noticed that on my T665c.

I have an SJ33 and play MP3's in the background all the time with no apparent slowdown in other operations. One of the nice things about the SJ33 is that you can put the unit on Hold which shuts down everything by the MP3 player and get around 10 hours of play time on a battery charge.
I am very happy with the SJ33 and MP3 player but there are 2 things you must keep in mind: 1. you need a memory stick to play MP3's and 2. there is no good facility for putting your songs in playlists and setting the order of songs.
Also, you do NOT need a MagicGate stick, just get the regular memory stick and copy the MP3's. Sony is trying to push their ATRAC-3 copy protection scheme with MagicGate.
Good luck.

the sj-33 use a hardware base for play back mp3 ! so there won't be any slowdown !
but if you run application on the memory stick while playing mp3 there is a little bit slowdown !
