I'm sure this has been covered before (couldn't find anything) but am considering a 680 (versus an iPhone) but have been holding out due to lack of built-in wifi. Is there an SD wifi card out there that also has decent storage size - say 1 gb so I don't have to constantly change them out back and forth.
Thanks

im not really sure into details but it has been like that since the treo 650. altho there was a hack in the treo 650 that made it possible to use the sd wifi of palm but it was unsupported due to a software update.

i dont know why palm does this :D

Simply it could be down to conflict with the phone connection running (Garnet OS' not liking of multiple connections :X )

OR

It can be down to the carriers wanting Palm to include something that will easily detract from their revenue (using wifi vs paying for internet through the carrier)

I just got a Treo 680 a month ago and its great but teh missing wifi does get annoying as it costs far too much for me to use my telco for internet but ehy its NZ and we got poor internet ($20NZD (16usd atm) per meg when your on prepaid like me ! eek! )

But if you could get it on a plan with a decent data paln (unlimited? but I ahev no idea how much that costs at teh moment) it would be better than wifi as you get internet pretty much wherever you are!

I know that this isn't a direct answer to your question, but if you just want a (non-phone) wireless connection, say, at home, to avoid large data charges, buy a bluetooth access point.

I have a Belkin one in my house and while the range isn't as good as 11b/g, I can connect my Treo from most rooms. I can then download stuff and surf the web without worrying about data volumes.

...and a more practical note, the SD card slot on the 680 is on the side with a door covering the slot (unlike the 650 which had it on the top). I don't think any of the wifi cards fit wholly within the slot and there's always a bit sticking out with the aerial in it, though some extend more than others.

Consequently, I don't think you'd want to walk round with the door flapping about.

(If there is a model out which fits wholly within the card slot, please let me know)

I thought there was a Wifi sled, which worked with 680?

As an FYI, after 6 years with Palm I've put a bid on a Cingular 8325 on eBay. I just don't excited with the old Treo design and things like lack of wifi. Sorry Palm but I'm going to the dark side.

Heh fair enough just seeing an engadget article on palm stuff and yeah 43% drop in profit last year and rim increased some 83% ouch

*(inserts moan about wanting a TX2 with gprs radio as well as wifi :P )*

Still I do admitidely like my treo 680 somewhat but still carrying around a few too many devices (my trusty nokia 6585 (drop or do anyhting to it it still works regardless and is nice and small but still has lots in it) my TX (big screen wifi nuff said) and my treo 860 (small but good screen and teh keys are somehwat usefull)
