 Okay....

Last night the computer that I use to Hotsync my Clie died!

I was thinking about getting a newer... updated computer because this one still runs on Windows 98 (stop laughing). Anyway... I avoided doing so because everything functioned so well with it that I didn't want to risk messing anything up! Now that it has died I can consider upgrading!

Question... How do/can I get my original Hotsync information off of this computer that runs Windows 98 and onto a newer operating system.... say Windows XP!

By the way... do you quys recommend Windows XP? Are there any known problems associated with using that operating system?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Depends on how your computer died.

If your hard drive died, you've got a very, very small chance of getting the data back. You could pay a few thousand dollars, and have a data recovery service do it for you, but that's not usually in most people's budget.

If your harddrive didn't die, you could install that drive as a secondary drive in your new machine, and copy the contents of your palm directory into the corresponding directory in your new machine.

Hey Headcronie....

That's not a bad ideal! I do have another question. If I attempt what you suggested... will I still be able to use my conduits to sync my information like Microsoft Money, DayNotz, Avantgo,4Cast, etc....?

You will need to reinstall each of the corresponding programs like MS Money, DayNotz, AvantGo, etc. Copying the contents of the old directory will not set this up for you.

You could backup your Clie to a memory stick first.

Install Palm desktop and all the conduits on your new computer, set the same hotsync username, set everything to "handheld overwrites desktop" then sync. Then you have most of your Palm related data on your new computer :)
