If you took the time to read the Palm web page for the new Desktop software, you would have an answer to your question.

Windows compatibility:

* Windows Vista only
* Not recommended for other Windows versions such as Windows XP or Windows 2000

Funny how Vista lacks full backward compatibility with XP. Makes it so much easier to jump to a new OS :p. Ubuntu Rules :)

Of course it is compatible with the Z-22, TE-2, and TX but looks like Lifedrive will not work with it....

Now we will wait for any Sony Clie compatability which I seriously doubt. Looks like the gautlet is tossed for hackers to come up with more compatibility....

As noted by Drunkard, if you read the documentation, you would have seen the following:

You must uninstall previous versions: This version of Palm Desktop is only intended for new installations on Windows Vista. It does not support the upgrade of pre-existing Palm Desktop installations to this new version. You must uninstall old versions of Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager prior to installing this beta version. We show you how, below.

You can find the installation documentation here (http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/windesk62.html).

Any idea what the new features of hotsync manager 7 (if any) are?

I curious since this is a major number update which should mean that they will be developing it for a while (as opposed to a minor version update which can be forgotten). Which in turn should mean that they will be producing devices to work with it, which in turn means that POS is not (fully) dead yet.

I have compiled an installer for hotsync 7.0.1 for Palm Desktop 4.2 as I dont want to use the crappy 6.2 which doesnt support Cyrillic

Here it is. It works on my Vista ultimate with Palm Desktop 4.2

I'm not sure, aside from Vista support, is new in this version. I do know that ACCESS, the company that purchased PalmSource, is still in control of the Palm Desktop and HotSyc Manager software. Palm continues to license this software from them. The major version numbers Palm Desktop 6.x and HotSync Manager 7.x could merely indicate this is a version under the latest license agreement. It could additionally signal that Palm has done the development work rather than ACCESS.

I tried it on my Vista laptop using the unofficial drivers from www.sonyclie.org and my Clie UX50 and it works fine. No Windows Calendar or Windows Address book integration though, I had to manually export my calendar, convert to vcs, and then import into Palm Desktop.

I had a clie N760C which wouldn't work anymore with my new vista PC. I didn't want to lose all my old data so I just bought a Palm Z22 so I could sync my data for now (since I read that 6.2Beta is Vista Compatible and works for the Z22). But I keep getting an error message when I try to uninstall the old palm desktop for clie (internal error 2738 it says), and the 6.2Beta instructions say I have to uninstall old palm desktop before installing the new. Any ideas on how to uninstall the old software? Thanks.

Also, if I'm not asking too much, what is the process to move the old files from the clie onto the z22 (I could beam them, but several years of calendar data makes that unwieldy). Is the old data in an archive that I can load onto the z22?

I'm sorry if these seem so basic, I'm not a computer wizard...

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I had some difficulty uninstalling my Palm folder (in prep for the fairly dreadful 6.2. OK, this is a Beta, but this is the best they can do? But I digress...) and there were several error codes that would pop up, including the one you mentioned.
A quicky Google found some 'solutions' but still didn't permit me to uninstall. In the end, I went back to the Palm CD and the Desktop 'saw' the current install and asked if I wanted to 'Repair, Modify or Remove'. I chose Remove and this worked.

It still leaves behind some Palm info which the fresh install of 6.2 will discover and use, but the 'old' Desktop is gone.

Hope this works for you.

I'll try this as soon as I can find my old install disc...

Thanks for the advice.

The Palm Desktop 6.2 beta did not work on my Vista Home Premium with a Treo 700p. The version (can't recall the version and not at home) that came with my Treo works well enough and I have a third party app that syncs .prcs during hotsync. Keep up the excellent support (NOT) Palm! How to win customers and influence consumers? Palm, you're losing at this game. :(

I installed a Treo 700p (Sprint) on a Windows Vista Business box and I had no trouble getting the Palm Desktop 6.2 BETA 1 software installed and HotSync'ing. The user account I installed the software under was an admin level account and it the user's primary Windows account. (The account that is used to do day-to-day tasks on the PC.)

The version of Palm Desktop that ships with the Treo 700p and later is Palm Desktop 4.2. It is not available for download from the Palm site. Palm Desktop 4.1.4e is compatible with the Treo 700p for those customers who have lost their software disc.

I installed Palm desktop 6.2 on my Vista Ultimate laptop and it works great (with my 700P post MR). I expected issues but was pleasantly surprised things worked well. (Seems that's the way things are these days; I'm surprised when things work instead of the other way around).

Hmm, must have something to do with my Vista install, although it is running fairly smoothly and stable. I'm not willing to restore to factory over it. I'm happy with Palm Desktop 4.2 and PalmVista Simple Installer combo . . . maybe Vista SP1 will fix so the 6.2 beta will work properly.

Hi, it is possible to hotsync ux-50 with palmdesktop 6.2 under windows vista ?. I read some people apparently made it possible with Th55. I did every step, but I can not transfer anything between palmdesktop and Ux50.
Any help?,
