View Full Version : SD Card Drains Battery?

I tried a little experiment last week at my night job (5-9pm). I took out the SD card to see how fast the apps would load. Apps located in RAM loaded just about immediately (as you'd expect), but I noticed that the battery meter started going UP a little, and otherwise didn't go down as fast by the end of the night. This leads me to think that with an expansion card loaded, it constantly uses power from the battery. Can anybody confirm this?
It's a Palm Tungsten E.
thx

I don't know what device your using, but a SD card definitely drains battery. On my TX, if the battery gets below a certain level, the SD card can't be accessed anymore.

Oops, sorry. It's a Tungsten E. In addition, I mean that the SD card seems to draw power even when the Palm is not on.

Never had this experience with my T|E. Perhaps the battery meter application is not behaving as it should. It is also possible that your LiOn battery is getting long in the tooth and is performing sub-optimally.

the performance ofthte battery in my T|E has decreased at about the same time that the power button stopped functioning- Connection?

Did you try a cradle reset?
It might be that the internal voltometer needs to be recalibrated.
Have a look here: (http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,case=obj(887)#incradle)
Although it says its only for the treo 600 and the Visors it does work an most (all?) rechargable palmos devices.

I don't think I can do the power-down reset: no removeable battery in my Palm. There's no cradle either; Tungsten E doesn't use a cradle.
BTW- I had the SD expansion card out of the device all weekend, and the battery only came down a couple percent in power. Now, I'm wondering how well the T|E will handle having the SD card inserted & removed a LOT- inserted only when it needs to load apps from the card.
thx

There is no need for a cradle.
Just do it while charging (but it has to be to back button).
There is one other possibility. It might be that either your card or your slot have sorted out. Have you tried with a different card?

I think that if the memory card was shorted out in some way then it wouldn't work at all. it works when I put it in the card reader...
I'm not sure that the card driver update has been installed. If not, I will try it to see what happens. It's also possible that ZLauncher needs the extra power.

After trying a few experiments with the SD card in & out to see how fast the battery goes down, I'm starting to think that some app like either ZLauncher or Agendus ( I have Agendus Pro) is draining the battery.
Any thoughts on that?
thx

I do not know about this but what I know is SD cards do draw power from my TE2 even when I am not using reading/writing the card.

what about backing up everything to the sd, doing a hard reset, and then testing the drain with / without sd card, so at least you'd know if it was software related.
