Got ambicom modem today. I have installed all the drivers, etc. listed in the CF modem thread. CF utility recognizes card okay, setup okay, but no light. Also, no matter my login setup, i get "Error:modem not found (0x1106)." I don't know what this means. Is there somewhere I can type an AT command to check modem, etc. Any ideas? I also have eruware drivers installed.

Can you put here, the used steps for the configuration?

I can type the steps if you think it will help, but they are all the steps from your posting in the CF modem install discussion (the long one with the files). The modem doesn't have sound right? Also, under view log for login it just has one line saying "Not connected" I thought maybe the card was bad, but the utility recognizes it no prob. I also tried after removing eruware driver (not utility tho), and the error message changed to someting else. Did hard reset, retried, still same modem not found error.

I cannot attempt dial-up another way since I do not have modem on my PC, but I dialed the ISP on voice and I can hear it tries to negotiate a conx.

You are using "Analog modem" in the connection prefs?

pelaca,
thanks for your help. I had a bad modem. replacement works okay, although compuserve is touch and go - not palm ppp friendly.

Is there any solution/work around to get a Targus Pocket Modem 56k v.90 modem to work with the NX? My understanding is that it does not work with the CFModem Utility.

Thanks in advance,
Jim

I am not sure, but if you are determined, it will be a driver issue. Can you plug it into laptop using a PCMCIA converter? That way amybe it can be properly identified. (Or not).

Don't work and no solution or work arround, sorry... I send a lot of mails to Sony about that, because the targus modem is made by Billionton, but no response from Sony.

Hi Pelaca!

Is there still a list somewhere of what modems my work? The only I can ever remember is Ambicom. Quite a few questions get asked about it. I thought at one time you had a list on your site:confused:

Thanks!

I can't get this to work with Compuserve Dial-up.

Using NZ90 with Ambicom CF Modem & Driver.

Have NetFront, WebPro, and PocketLink all installed.

My settings:
Network-
Service: Compuserve
Username: filled in
Password: filled in
Connection: Ambicom
Phone: filled in

Details-
Type: PPP
Idle Timeout: Never
Query DNS: Not checked
Primary DNS: 149 174 211 5
Secondary DNS: 149 174 213 5
IP Address: Checked for Automatic

Script-
"End"

Help! (and Thanks!)

And do I need any special settings/preferences for the Browsers?

Well I still am not able to use the Xircom 56k modem... I think that probably this modem is not supported... I've configured it just like that post instructed to.... but nothing.... always the same error "error : serial"...

I see that some people are trying to connect to Compuserve. I believe Compuserve is pretty much like AOL. In fact, AOL owns Compuserve. On a regular PC, if you don't have the Compuserve software, and you're using a regular dial up, you won't be able to access Compuserve (I may be wrong, but a couple of years ago, that's what would happen). You may try the AOL palm software and use your Compuserve screen name and see if that works. I intend on buying the Ambicom CF modem this weekend. I may test out my theory and see what happens. Hope this helps.

Ambicom is the only one I can remember, there are others, but I would have to search back through the posts to find them. I am told Ambicom is carried by Best Buy.

You can find the generic driver below:

http://clienx_cf_modem.tripod.com/

I don't have an AOL account so I can't help there, sorry!

CF Modem Installation Instructions
Hello all,

I have been requested by our favorite Brazilian, Pelaca, to put together a step by step instruction set on getting a CF modem to properly function in an NX. Here goes.....

1. Obtain an NX (preferably via legal means)

2. Obtain a compatible modem. I use the AmbiCom which I purchased at Best Buy (click here)

3. Install the attached files contained on the two following posts. The first file (cfutils.zip) contains the Japanese version of the modem drivers. The second file (cfutilityen.zip) contains the modified English language file that Pelaca has spent many hours on.

4. After installation, perform a Soft Reset of your NX by pressing the small button on the back of your unit.

5. Locate and execute the new program "CF Utility" in your launcher (hint: the icon has a picture of a hammer & screwdriver)

6. Insert your new modem into the CF slot on your device. The screen should read:

Brand: CF
Product: 56K Modem JATE

7. Return to your launcher and run your system PREFS utility. Select "Network" in the dropdown menu (upper right).

8. Within Network Preferences tap the dropdown menu next to Service and select the top entry (AT&T). Next, tap the dropdown menu next to Connection and select "Edit Connections".

9. Within "Available Connections" select "New"

10. Within "Edit Connection" replace the name "Custom" with the name of your modem (i.e. AmbiCom, or maybe Pete). Set "Connect to:" to "Modem". Set "Via" to the top setting of "Analog Modem (gibberish)". Tap "Ok" then tap "Done"

11. Now you are back at the "Network Preferences" screen. Replace the service name to your ISP name. Enter your ISP info under "User Name", "Password" & "Phone #". Under the "Connection" setting, select the modem name you entered in step 10 (should be the bottom choice).

12. Connect telephone line (analog) and tap "Connect"

Simple eh?

From: Pelaca
You have to install... the "CFUtilityen.prc" then the "CFNULLinf.prc", "CFmodeminf.prc" and "CFmodemvdrv.prc"...
In the "cfutilityen.zip" you can found the needed files...
The TDK, KAGA, Billionton are supported by Sony but the Princeton and Ambicom works too...
I'm working on the Xircom now with no success for now...
