View Full Version : Question about Z22 capabilities

I just read a thread here where someone asked whether the Z22 would display a spreadsheet well. I saw a lot of replies; but, no one said anything about the spreadsheet. I didn't know a Z22 would handle spreadsheets at all.

I don't need to do spreadsheets; but, are there any applications that allow the Z22 to do documents of any kind?

Next question: I have a TX which I would like a lot more if it hadn't spent three months of the last year gone for repair. I know the Z22 handles contacts (names, phone numbers, addresses, etc); but, does it allow notes to go with those contacts like the TX does?

And while on the subject, where can I get the best price on a Z22 with a warranty?

I think it can attach notes to contacts (if you really want to know I can dig up my Z22 tomorrow), it runs Palm OS 5.4, so everything will be pretty much the same. It is a very durable, stable device, but the screen is not nearly as good as the T|X's, and appears a little yellowish. Memory is always a problem, with only 22MB out-of-the-box and no expansion slot. If you want to use it as a digital organizer it'll do the job well, but anything else I don't know. What exactly do you need to use it for?

With as much as my TX has been off for repair, I feel I need a backup device, at least for phone numbers and notes that go with those phone numbers, also appointments and alarms for those appointments. I understand the Z22 will do that.

As much as I hate the idea of giving Palm any more money after the poor service I've gotten from my TX, I am going to purchase an extended warranty before my first year runs out on 10/02/2007. At least then, when I have to send the TX for repair, I will have the contacts, notes and calendar in the Z22 backup.

Anyway, that's the idea.

I have about 500 Word documents in Documents to Go 9.0 Premium ranging from a few lines to several pages each (12.4 megs total on the hard disk); but, I know the Z22 will not help me there.

500 docs + the Documents To Go app is a little to much I think. But if you want to use it as a "emergency backup" while your T|X is down, I think it'll do a good job. (BTW the Z22 can have notes attached to Contacts).

(ref (http://www.dataviz.com/products/documentstogo/premium/dxtg_techspecs.html)) I would assume spreadsheets would look terrible, but I would think word documents would be at least usable.

Thanks, that's nice to know. I think I'll get a Z22 for a backup device and with this TX's history, I better get that extra year's warranty (for the TX).

It's really sad, though, that my TX requires so much shop time that I have to rotate one for the shop and one to use. With the repair I shipped it off for yesterday, it will have been gone for repair about three months in the first ten months of ownership (about one month per repair).

TejpWriter (twriter.atspace.org) does this quite nicely. no .doc export, but it does use a special format that you can export to html. It is especially wonderful on your T|X when you get it back ;-)

Good luck,

HTML is nice. Thanks.

Hi,
I second that. The Z22 makes a great backup unit.

As for mobilizing Word files - DocsToGo should work well. Just limit the amount of files on the machine.

Last but not least, if I recall correctly, the free RAM on the Z22 can be increased by deleeting some of the bundled apps. Not sure of that though!

You could look for a used Zire 31 which has a SD slot, right? That would seem to be the perfect backup for you.

Palm Z-31 is roughly the same price as Z-31! See link:

I just bought a used one, with no Cd ( an illegal copy is available ) for $50 it is like an M50x Palm but can play MP3 unlike the sorry Z-22. Good point don't use a metal stylus or an 4gb memory card.....(oh and z-31 isn't covered by the Vista update.)

What difference does it make whether I put a metal or plastic stylus into the silo?

Metal stylus will short out and kill the Z22 due to the ease of breaking silo and contacting circuit board with non-included stylus.

Sounds like a design flaw to me; but, thanks for the heads-up.

Been there, shorted that. there is no protection between the boards and the silo. (look in there...) so be careful! Yeaps, mine is a story for another time though ;) very 'fun' read

Don't put the stylus in upside-down either. It will get stuck.
