USB parameters vary according to Computer make and Windoz version. For windows xp you must turn off the computer and establish which usb users are being used. For instance when I use my card reader and then try to attach a hotsync cable I will get an error message.

Laptops users will plug and unplug various usb devices and if you switch the plug that is normally used for another usb device the computer gets confused. Thus port one should always use one particular device and port two use only another device.
