I currently have a Palm IIIxe and am thinking of upgrading to an SJ33. I plan on giving my wife the IIIxe, but I want to move all my info to the SJ33.

The IIIxe is currently syncing to Palm Desktop and the SJ33 will sync to the clie desktop software (or maybe Outlook, not sure yet).

Will there be any issues trying to move all the info to the SJ33?

Will there be any issues have multiple PDA desktop (Palm and Clie?) software on one machine?

Please advise.

I went from a IIIxe to a SJ20 in December 2002. I would not advise loading the Sony desktop. It's just an older version of the Palm software. As long as your 2 devices don't share the same username, you should be okay. Of course, changing the username will screw up any registered software you have. :-(

I ended up keeping my IIIxe for use with my Streetfinder GPS. When I set up my SJ20, I used the same username as my IIIxe username. I hotsync'd once (I use BackupBuddy) and everything came over fine. Some things didn't work any more, like JackFlash, but overall, I was pleased with the results. I now hotsync my IIIxe on my laptop, and my SJ20 on one of the 3 desktop systems I have. I don't know of any way to;
1) Run 2 versions of desktop s/w on one system (i.e. Sony and Palm desktop), or
2) Hotsync 2 units with the same username on one PC (without having them mess each other up).

You won't believe how much better the SJ display is over the IIIxe! You better keep an eye on the SJ33, so your wife doesn't try to pull a switch on you...

Good luck.

Thanks palmgeek.

Now I'm actually thinking about getting an SJ22 instead of a 33. All I use my palm for is a glorified address book/calendar.

Have you been happy with your SJ22? I wish they would have put the 66mhz chip in it, oh well. I agree the screen is great. I spent 1 hour in Circuit City in awe of the great screen on the SJ22 and 33 compared to my IIIxe. I like the smaller size of the 22. Not sure if you even use it, but does the included flip cover provide enough protection for keeping the clie in your pocket. My IIIxe is in the Palm brand slim case and gets a little bulky at times.

Thanks again for the info.

The 22 is great. Got one two weeks ago. Does everything you need if you don't need music, a camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, movies, or your coffee made in the morning. I do wish it could run to the fridge and get me a beer, though. :) Pictures, like with SplashPhoto, are really nice. I had a TRG Pro and HandEra 330 before, so my jaw is still dropping every time I turn it on and look at the screen. Around home I usually keep the brightness slider at half and below. At that setting the battery life looks real good. At full brightness it doesn't look real bad either.

At 33MHz it still seems pretty zippy. The only place it bogs down is when doing something like loading a large book into WordSmith off of the memory stick.

The flip cover is OK, but when I was using it (last week before getting a MarWare SportSuit) I kept putting a rubber band around the whole PDA/cover to keep the cover from flipping up. It would probably work OK in a pocket. It's still nice having it be cloth, instead of some cheezy piece of plastic. I got a BoxWave ClearTouch screen protector for it. I'll be getting another one when that one wears out.

If you can, go through a bunch of them, because there are slight differences in max display brightness. I went through 20 of them that we got at work just to fire them all up and get them running and noticed that. There isn't a lot of difference, but there is some. Usually the dimmer ones have dark and light areas along the botom and sides (like you can see there the "bulbs" are).

I carry mine in my front pants pocket frequently. Just to clarify, I have the SJ20, which shipped with a semi-flexible flip cover. The SJ units are built much more sturdier than the IIIxe was. The included cover affords plenty of protection in a pocket (unless you're playing Rugby or something). I wish I could find a simple leather version of the original flip cover, with a couple pockets in it. I have a Krussell, which is okay, but as Bob mentioned... a little buly at times. So, I usually just keep the old flip cover on it, and toss it in my pocket. I also swiped a strap from an old cell phone and put it on my Clie. The flip cover affords *no* drop protection.

Ultimately, I'm looking for another neoprene case like the PalmGlove I had for my IIIxe. My SJ20 “swims” in my old PalmGlove case (which fit my IIIxe perfectly). Bob mentioned the MarWare SportSuit, but I looked at the dimensions, and unfortunately, it is as big as the PalmGlove case. (sigh) Why doesn’t somebody make an SJ-sized neoprene case?

BTW, don’t be ashamed of using your PDA as a “glorified address book/calendar”. That’s what they were designed to do, and they perform well in that area. I too use my PDA as a PDA… (If I had wanted a Game Boy or MP3 Player, I would have bought one of those, instead of buying a PDA!) I wrote a couple databases (ThinkDB, now Smartlist to Go) to keep track of my bill payments, gas usage, and other stuff. I have 3 years of valuable information stored on my device (taken from my Palm Pro, to my Palm IIIxe, to my Sony SJ20). Tracking medical expenditures and gas usage sure comes in handy at tax time!!! My wife still asks me for phone numbers, even though she has a “memory of steel”. I guess my Clie just has more (better) memory… :-)

I have a PalmGlove that I had for my TRG Pro. The SportSuit is actually quite a bit shorter -- about 1/2", but about the same width. When it's all zipped up there isn't a lot of spare room between the SJ22 and the zipper, and what spare room there is is good in case of a drop (I just don't get these people that want metal cases that transmit the shock from an impact directly to the PDA via a thin piece of foam). The SportSuit will probably make the PDA too big for your pocket, but it is smaller than the PalmGlove.

You better not let her see that you wrote that. :)
