View Full Version : Strange middle-of-the-night behavior

I was up last night until almost 3AM. So was my wife. :)
As we were finally going to sleep, the clock read 2:58 on the VCR. (Which is about the only use for that device, come to think of it.)
The room was suddenly illuminated by the TX's glow for probably 3 seconds. It obviously turned itself on and then back off again quickly. There was no alarm sound, no alarm set, nothing. It did not crash. . .if I hadn't been awake, I would never have known. (My daily back-up runs at 1PM, FYI.)
My wife commented that she has noticed it before--she wakes frequently during the night, but not always at the same time.
Any ideas what might be happening?

3:00am just happens to be the default time that DateBk6 does a scan to move floating events to the current day. You can change this (or disable it) on the Date/Time preference screen

My guess is that some application is performing some maintenance activity (such as DateBk6). I would suggest running Erwin Schomburg's Alarms? (http://www.erwin-schomburg.homepage.t-online.de/indexe.htm) application. This will display a list of all applications on your device that currently have an alarm set, and the time of their next alarm. Presumably you should see an application with a time near 3:00am. If the application in question is something that potentially maintains a lot of alarms (like DateBk6) you might have to run it late in the evening to see the 3:00am alarm.

I'm an Agendus uservictim, but I would imagine that it does the same sort of thing. I'll check it tonight when I set the alarm clock.
Thanks for the ideas.

You can also get Alarms from here (http://www.freewarepalm.com/clock/alarms.shtml) and see what alarm goes off at that time.
I don't think agendus does that btw...

The version of "Alarms?" on freewarepalm.com is v2.0.0Q posted June 16, 2005. The version on Erwin Schomburg's site (http://www.erwin-schomburg.homepage.t-online.de/indexe.htm) is v2.0.1Q posted Dec 16, 2005 (slightly newer).

I know everyone, EVERYONE, has been anxiously awaiting my findings. . .so without making you wait further:
Snappermail. It set a 3AM (actually 3:00:05 AM) to do something. . .can't find anything in the preferences to control this, not that it really bothers me that much. Anyone happen to know what it does at that hour?

It does a couple of things,
a. Deletes old emails from the device (based on your settings)
b. Moves old emails to the card to save space.
Open the menu, go to Options->Preferences and select storage. The default setting is there. You might have set up certain folders to behave diferently so you need to check them individualy.
I remember that in one of the recent versions of snappermail made sure that the device won't wake up if it was setup up to do nothing (there was a bug where it would wake up eitherway). You might wanna check that you are running the latest version.

Some references:

1src SnapperMail 3am crash & battery drain (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78938)
SnapperMail Version History (http://www.snappermail.com/support/history.cfm)
Under 2.2.5: CARD: Archiving '3am' task time can now be modified by the user on the Preferences->Storage tab.
Skimming some of the Google finds, it appears that the 3am event is used for archiving. Apparently moving older emails and attachments out of memory and on to the SD card.

Wow--that was really kind of you to research all that--very much appreciated!
