You know i want to make a new expansion, like the shire, thrimithia or those exp packs not created by the redshift team, but i dunno where to start, as i havent found an editor or something like that, so i want to know how guys like doeni, dan & Q&A do to create a new world, cause i think mine could be very interesting :)
so if someone could help me i would apreciatte it. :D

P.S. Pardon me if i´ve made some spelling, grammar or any kind of mistake, due to the fact english is not my mother tongue :p

I'm also interested in using the editor. I have some questions about it, but wasn't sure where to post them.

1) In the screenshots for the FOTR expansion, they showed mountains they had created. I thought those were clever, and wondered if that was something THEY did, or if they are in the Vanilla Quest game and I just haven't seen them yet.

2) Is it possible to add items, NPCs, buildings to the EXISTING Quest map? For example, adding an NPC or building to Matras? In the original description for the game (before release) it sounded as if this would be possible. Or are all addons/mods considered worlds which must be traveled to as was the case in Legacy. Just curious. I would LOVE to be able to add things to the existing world. Like a player house!

Thanks

1)Those mountains can be seen in the offical Expansionpack ;)
Basically, they are just roofs placed on the ground ;)

2)Yes, you can edit an existing expansion.

------------------------------

If you want an editor, email stewe(at)redshift(dot)hu (same for all others)

But before that please consider the following things:

-You need basic knowledge about programming/scripting
-You need to learn the Redshift engine's syntax
-For own graphics, you need some graphic editor to create gifs
-The editor is still beta-version, and not released, its unstable and has bugs
-The editor opens many possibilties, but due to this it is a very complex application. Don't think you can just create a little expansion during lunch break ;)

Trimithia e.g. has a size of 4x4 fields, is 2/3 finished and i put about 15 hours of work in it. (without graphics creating)

I say this to
1) prevent redshift of tons of unserious editor requests
2) To prevent players crap expansions/half finished beta versions etc

Please only email them if you have seriously planned something

Perfectly understandable! I'll admit, I don't have anything ground-breaking planned. BUT, I would like to be able to dabble with it and see how it works for myself.

I do have scripting/coding experience, although by no means expertise. Also, I worked with the Legacy editor a bit and was fairly comfortable with it, though I never developed anything to release. Finally, I'm a graphic artist and (should I get that far) can handle new graphics fairly well.

However, my ideas for addons are small. I like working with content already in the game and adding to it, rather than developing things from the ground up. A basic player house for one example. How complicated (in your opinion) is something like that?

Anyway, thanks for the help! I promise not to annoy Stewe and crew. ;)

One fast note: You can add things to an existing expansion, but many of the maps have used as close to the maximum storage space as they can and even the adding of one new element can make the game lock up and crash. So keep many backups, save after each change. Almost always, game crashes will occur when crossing boundaries from one map to another. That, I beleive is due to memory overflows where edits or changes have made a map too large for the internal structures that have been allocated for them.

As to a player house, keep in mind that there is one already in the Basic game, you just may not have found it yet (or earned it).

Cheers,
Magicman

Magicman:
I did not know there was a house! (I avoid looking for spoilers) So I guess I need to find it and earn it. :)

That's interesting to note, regarding the map sizes. Thanks. I'll follow Cat's advice and now ask further questions at the link he provided. Thanks all!

Catacomber:
I agree with regards to people clamoring for the editor. I don't know what state the editor is in, and whether he plans to release it publicly, but I know that having an editor is what made the TES games as lasting as they are. Great games, made even better by player contributions, big and small. Yes, there will be MANY bad player addons, but that is what forums and rating systems are for. Eventually, you end up with a 'Hall of Fame' list, and must-haves, etc. It generates continuous interest in the game.

Does the editor allow you to create weapons and armor? OR just maps?

Almost everything can be customized, its very open system, but therefore somewhat complex:
New weapons, armor, scripts, items, spells, cures, recipes, world graphics (monsters, npcs, walls, trees, skys, ground, whatever), sounds, spell animations, diseases, Interiors....

Basicly, the only thing that can't be changed is the game's engine :D

o.O Danega is our private forum, stewe is not involved in this :)
Stewe only unlocks the users for the PDAGround Beta threads.

I sent you a pm ;)

I've just opened a new section on my site for the editor.
People who are interested in the Editor should take a look there ;)

Also, there is a archive of free monster graphics and map objects to download (still growing).
