I have just bought a Clie NX60 after studying these postings for a few days, and was very excited to use it with my mac (OS 10.2), docs to go, etc.
I tried to install Palm desktop 4.0 on my mac after downloading from the palm website. I got a message saying a palm desktop program was already on my computer (news to me) as a system 9 application. Then the installer continued and I could open Palm desktop but when I tried to hotsync, nothing. With some maneouvering I managed to uninstall palm desktop from system 9. But when I went back to system 10 (many restarts), and tried to install or uninstall i got a message saying "sorry...system error: access denied." The application is gone, too, leaving just an empty folder. What can I do?? Thanks so much.
I have a similar problem with my NR70V. I updated to the new iSync, and syncing begins to freeze. So I tried uninstalling PD, iSync, and Missing Sync. Now I can't reinstall PD with the same error message as you. If you find out anything, will you please post a reply, as will I?

login a root
I can install other software, just not PD. Shouldn't the same problem apply to all? And how do I log in as root? Terminal - su root or something?
And how do I install after logging in as root?
Thanks for your help, btw.

I'm having the same problem. Can't figure it out. The Mac won't even detect the hotsync request. I checked to make sure that all the right processes are running ("top" command using terminal). Has anyone gotten NX70v to work with OS X 10.2.3?

have you tried deleting EVERYTHING related to PD? (pref's,...) ?at the login screen choose "other" (dont know exact translation) , than type Root and password. If there is no Root enabled; enable it in utilities>netinfo mgr

The ever-friendly, it's-a-Mac-honest, you don't need to ever mess with the Unix underpinnings, OSX strikes again!
This kind of thing is really alienating me from a product that I've loved/been loyal to for 12 years. Each time I think OSX is mature enough to migrate to I see something like this and tell myself to wait a bit longer (forever?). Come on Apple, sort out all the weirdness in X.

No need to wait to migrate to OSX. OSX is ROCK solid, never crashes! i have an uptime of 28 days, try that with your OS9 :-)
my father knows nothing about UNIX, and even he says OSX is the best operating system, even for a computer dummy like him. Adrian, it's time to say good bye to old crappy OS9 and upgrade to the futurue!

I don't doubt that it's stable. But what's the point of it staying up if during that time it keeps saying arcane stuff like "user access denied, insufficient permissions" etc? Just seems that trouble-shooting can force you to confront the Unix bits and it ain't pleasant.

we have 2 persons here who are complaining? I don't here much of the other million users.
Ok, everybody with permision errors:
go to programs>utilities>disk first aid (don't know the translation in english).select the second part (disc EHBO in dutch) and select "control permissions" (translation), this should work!.
Unix aint pleasant?!?
2 years ago i was a conservative as you are now. Rightnow I enjoy every minute in OSX
Thank you for the help. Logging in as "root" did allow me to install the software. The solution was easy enough, once I had the right information.
As an aside, I'm a recent PC to Mac convert who, while fairly ignorant of UNIX, likes OS X. It isn't difficult (or any more difficult than Microsoft, which is an important distinction). When complaining about something, one should look at the field of products and realize that, while not optimal, a particular product may still be best.

i fully agree on that. I'm glad logging in as root did the job!
noco, you've made the right decision switching to the mac platform! :-)

Ok, so we can now install the Palm Desktop. Is there absolutely no way to get it to sync with NX besides paying $30 for Missing Sync?

That's correct ianjeklim. Except for this;
Buy the MSB1 bluetooth memorystick for the Clié (costs 220 euro) and you also need a USB bluetooth dongle (80 euro).
Ianjeklim i wrote a driver myself and it works with all cliés ; you can hotsync. email me @ koenwastyn@mac.com
similar problems....
i first f'd up by installing missing sync BEFORE palm desktop 4.0,
mackspace said to reinstall PD first, then install MisSync over again
then i f'd up by trying to uninstall palm desktop: i tried to delete the palm desktop folder from mac HD/applications.
now its all f'd up because i can't reinstall PD and i get an "access denied" message.
i tried getting a new PD 4.0 from palm, but still, no dice.
confused and ignorant,

log in as root
thanks for your last reply, i actually don't know where to actually "log in".
also: i had no problem hotsyncing with the IR port but still, I cannot hotsync with the cradle.
when in the hotsyncing menu, i click activated the USB and IR, but the settings button is "grey", i.e. I cannot click it.
any ideas?
much obliged, aod
