Ever since i downloaded hackmaster and the uptime hack, my clie has been crashing very often. it never did that b4. the first few times, i just removed the batteries for a while. this time i was not even able to turn on the clie, and the batts were fine. i pushed the reset on the back of my SL10 and it was fine. i hotsynced and was finally able to get rid of the uptime (rechargeable battery) hack after that.

now it crashed again. Will a hard reset solve my problems- what more does a hard reset erase, and do i have to edit (remove uptime hack) what to hotsync b4 backing up the data on my clie?

Hard reset erases everything except the built-in applications. Also, realize that hotsync'ing doesn't back up everything on your handheld. You will need to use something like BackupBuddy if you want to be backed up completely. There is a "reset" which bypasses hacks, but I'm not sure how to do it. It is something like holding the up button while pressing the back reset switch - but verify that before doing it.

No,  I was suggesting a WARM reset, before doing a (last resort) HARD reset.  Here's the info - I went and looked it up:

The Palm can be reset in three different ways:
1. A Soft Reset
2. A Warm Reset
3. A Hard Reset

Performing a Soft Reset
A soft reset tells your Palm to stop what it's doing and start over again. All records and entries stored in your handheld are retained with a soft reset. After a soft reset, the Palm logo screen appears, followed by the General Preferences screen.
To perform a soft reset:
Use the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or similar object without a sharp tip), to gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your handheld.

Performing a Warm Reset
A warm reset bypasses any system extensions (such as HackMaster hacks, OS patches, etc) that are loaded on your handheld. Performing a warm reset will often bypass the "boot loop" error, allow you to remove any third party application that has recently been installed that might be causing the problem.
To perform a warm reset:
1. Press and hold the Page Up button on your handheld.
2. Use the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or a similar object without a sharp tip), gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your Palm.
3. When the Palm logo appears on the screen, release the Page Up button.

Performing a Hard Reset
With a hard reset, all records and entries stored in your Palm are erased. Formats Preferences and other settings are restored to their factory default settings. You can restore any data previously synchronized with your computer during the next HotSync operation. You will need to re-install your 3rd party applications unless you are using Palm OS™ 3.3 or a third party backup solution that automatically backs up and restores installed applications.
Never perform a hard reset unless a soft or warm reset does not solve your problem.
To perform a hard reset:
1. Hold down the power button on the front panel of the Palm.
2. While holding down the power button, use the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or similar object without a sharp tip), to gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your handheld.
3. Release the reset button.
4. When the Palm logo appears on the screen, release the power button.
5. When the message appears on the Palm screen warning that you are about to erase all the data stored on your organizer, do one of the following:
Press the page up button on the front panel of the handheld to complete the hard reset and display the Digitizer screen.
Pressing any other button will perform a soft reset.

Hope this helps!

Thank you very much for taking all the time out to type that up (and look it up too)!!! It's very helpful as the EBay seller where I got my Clie did not send me the operations manual (i didn't realize till now since i did have 2 other manuals ("Getting Started" and "Third party -apps" manuals).

Thanks,

Most SL10's sold in the U.S. don't have Flash ROM, so JackFlash does nothing on them. If you want to remove JackFlash from your SL10, do a Warm Reset, then remove it.

(What is meant by "all kinds of resets"??? )
