Check your palm desktop and see if you have the right name for hot sync and that it is set to usb on the NR go into preferences, hot sync settings and make sure it is cradle, cable setting.

hi 4141048,
I had this problem once. Mine happened when a wireless (bluetooth) hotsync failed. After that I got the same error. As it turned out my bluetooth software or the hotsync software blocked the port and kept it open. I had to to deinstall the palm desktop software and the bluetooth suite to get rid of that problem. It is rather annoying and took me quite a while to solve.
You might check the support areas of palm and sony. It is a pretty common problem and I think I read something about it one of the support pages.
Good luck

you answered ur own question.
you're gettin that error cause ur
"usb port is in use by another application"
unplug whatever other usb device you have when u hotsync
then u shouldnt have a problem

not always, do you get that error message that it is being used by another port, sometimes the setup on the pc is not the same as the setup on the handheld.

Hi 4141048
I wish technology would work first time without having to spend a whole day trying to tweak things. I dread buying any new devices or accessories now.
I am currently battling with the same problem so you are not alone. I have tried everything without success so it is not due to other usb devices(I have none except the Clie cradle which I disconnected) or incorrect setup. I thought it might be due to other device drivers such as Psiwin but uninstalling hasn't worked. I will now try uninstalling and re installing the Palm and Bluetooth software.
If anyone finds a patch or solution could you post it please in case this is a recurrent problem.

Odd...I was just coming here to post my identical problem.
I hotsync'd just fine yesterday and now I'm getting the same "the port is in use" you guys are reporting. I have made zero changes to my system since the last sync so I'm at a loss as to what happened.
I'm leaning toward uninstalling palm desktop and sync software but I have one major problem: I don't have the original Clie install disc. Is there somewhere I can download it? Will the Palm version work? I don't even know if the Palm version is downloadable.

Found help at Sony's support site:
http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/top10/1670008908.html
Somehow my NR forgot my user name. I had to do a hard reset but it is working now. Hope this helps you guys too.

Hi SiliGoose,
Thanks for providing the Sony Support site address.
My problem does not appear to be related to a loss of User name on my Clie so it must be something to do with the sync software.
Fortunately I have all the disks. I hope however that uninstalling and reinstalling the software will
a) work with the port problem
b) will not result in yet another slow sync with loads of duplicates on Outlook and the Datebook which I will then have to spend hours cleaning up.
So before I launch into this venture can anyone tell me if an uninstall/reinstall results in the Hotsync manager forgetting the previous syncs causing a first time sync scenario?
If it does I might have a Bluetooth MS for sale or destruction.
