My clie recently died (would not charge) I backed up the whole thing to a memory stick and purchased a new clie from Sony. now, when trying to restore the information saved on the MS, I gte the following message: "The back up set that you selected is not the back up data of this device......."
How can I restore the information on my MS?
P.S. the unit mentioned is a PEG T-615, and it was replaced with the same model.
thank you, your help is greatly appreciated

What backup program are you using?

If you backed up through the built in MSBackup, I would have thought you could have used restored your data using that same program. If you are limited to backing "only the same serial number", that would defeat one of the purposes of the backup, which is incase you damage your organiser. I Doubt this is the case. Maybe MS Backup requires the T615 to have the same user name, already installed, which is an inconvenience if that were the case. However, I think that sounds even less likely. However, the very fact that MSbackup recognises it is a different machine does suggest it either checks the serial number, or user name, of the machine. Unless, ofcourse, the database is corrupted.

(Assuming you can't restore data from within MSbackup, and you have no backup or sync with a computer)
My Suggestion is to do the Following: -

Open MSgate

Select "MS" in drop down menu on upper right.

Towards the top left of the screen, you should see the name and path of file you are browsing, on your MemoryStick. This would most likely read "/PALM/Launcher". This is the "Default" folder where your applications go when you move them from your RAM to Memorystick.

To the left there is a square with an "L" shape with an arrow on top. This, like on a computer, takes you out (Exits You Out) of the current folder you are viewing.

Press this Exit arrow, until you cant go any further. There should only be a "/" directory at the top, and on the screen, there should be the Folder "PALM".

Press the folder "PALM" once, to enter it. Above, the Directory now says "/PALM". You can see The folders available. (When finishing, but not now, you will want to enter "launcher" file, so the next time you use MSGate, you will be in the most useful place)

Press the file "Programs".

Press the file "MSBackup"

You will see a backup number like "0" or "1"

Before doing anything, if there is more than one backup number, Enter them all, to determine which is the latest, or even has any data in it. Do this by pressing the first file, examine it. Press exit arrow at top left to go back into MSBackup folder, then press the next, and so on.

Within the backup file, you should see all the programs and data, you backed up.

You can highlight an copy to RAM any files you wish (I suggest copy, rather than move, incase you have more difficulty, and for safe-keeping) Although I cant remember doing it, I wouldn't be supprised if it allows you to copy all the backup files together, in one go, to RAM.

When you are finished, exit the files, until you are in "/PALM/" and press "Launcher" file to return to where you are most likely to want to go to next time you enter MSGate.

Note, after restoring files, I have occasionally had difficulty with "LauncherX" and had to delete it to avoind crashing. In that case, after the reset, the preferences screen shows, don't press Home (taking you to LauncherX) select "Buttons" select a hard button to Applications, or MSGate, and delete LauncherX.

Good Luck.
