I went to my Apple store and took some pictures. Here is what I gathered.

1. The iPhone is nothing short of amazing.
2. The screen is amazing. It is a lot better than the UX50, and even looks good in light.
3. It doesn't get fingerprints at all, and also is pretty scratch resistant.
4. The device is small and light.
5. The camera is great.
6. Loading a webpage on the iPhone is faster. Not to mention it renders it great and viewing the page is a dream.
7. Videos look gorgeous!
8. The keyboard is very smart. I thought I would have to go back and fix everything... but it fixed it for me! Very nice!
9. The multi-touch screen is great.
10. Coverflow is great, and being able to click on the album cover and seeing the songs is great! It is fast too!
11. Finding music on the iPhone is quick and easy!
12. The iPhone is fast! Those videos on TV are not fake!

I wonder if I can buy one unlocked and just use the wifi for internet. ATT doesn't serve my area. And I wonder would it be worth the expense just to have a fancy PDA device without the phone. And I wonder if I shouldn't just wait as something has to come along soon with Apple for PDA needs. Whats everyone's thoughts? I want TH55 stuff with this great Apple interface.

You can't, it won't let you sync unless you activated it.

Bummer. Looks like I won't be jumping for the IPhone at this time. My TH55 is still working great. Hope it hangs in there until something comparable comes along.

Does it work in Linux? :D

Neither the iPhone nor the TH55 work under Linux.

If the iPhone really uses something near mac OSX, it has some family bounds with a Unix system, and so could be considered a kind of relative of Linux ... but it's definitively not really a Linux.

i can confirm what dg says above, and also note that if you are willing to risk bricking a $600 device you can use Jon Lech's hack to activate your iphone for use as a wifi enabled ipod, with no cell service.

i'm happy to answer any other Qs, and for a review check out this week's PA podcast (#79)

You know what would be an awesome application? Turn the iPhone into a wifi wireless access point connected through EDGE. Not the fastest connection, but if you are traveling stuck in a hotel room, I could think of no cooler feature.
