Hi:
I've downloaded both Sunrise .042j and Sunrise XP. When I start installing Sunrise.042j it complains that I don't have the Java runtime installed, though I do, and says I have to have 1.42 or above. Even if I install 1.42, it still complains. I can't seem to get .042 to work no matter what I do. Any suggestions?
SunriseXP seems to work and will send pages to Firefox but everyone warns about the bugs in SunriseXP. Should I just stick with SunriseXP?
I'm using Plucker 1.9 and would like to find a Unicode font or any font that will enable it to display Chinese. I have CJKOS, a Chinese environment on my Palm.
SourceForge has some font packages for Sunrise/Plucker. Should I install all or is there one better than the others?
Lastly, there doesn't seem to be a way to get Plucker to look for files on my SD card. I believe that Plucker will just look for files in its current folder, internal or SD. So I assume it's time to use a launcher that will allow me to launch apps from my sd card. With CJKOS, Mobi-Systems Office, Pleco Dict Chinese Dictionary and the host of other utilities I use, I'm down to about 17 megs free. I can see the writing on the wall.
So what launcher would you recommend that will coexist with UNcache, Warpspeed, Off Flush etc. I really just need it or some other way to launch apps from my sd card.
Any help and hints how any of you have successfully used Sunrise/plucker would be greatly appreciated. Once I get it down, I'll be passing on to eight other Palm users in my area. We're all on Windoze.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi:
I'd like to be able to open Plucker from my sd card so I don't have to store all of the web pages in internal memory. What's the easiest launcher to use, LauncherX, Zlauncher, Resco Explorer or perhaps another stand alone application?
Thanks,
Tom

IMHO, the easiest launcher to install and use is LauncherX. It's pretty much usable with very little configuration. While other launchers have more bells and whistles, they tend to either be harder to use, configure, have a bigger footprint, or all 3 (read ZLauncher).

I haven't used Sunrise 0.42j on a Windoze box in a while (I use Linux) but IIRC, you need to make sure that both Sunrise and JRE are installed in the same directory. I would try to uninstall Sunrise and then make sure JRE is installed first. Then reinstall Sunrise.
I know that SunriseXP doesn't rely on JRE so that might be an option for you... you might have better luck than I did.
Plucker will automatically look for files in the Palm/Programs/Plucker directory of an SD card. I just put all my pdb files there and then use the viewer to organize them into categories.
As for the Chinese fonts... sorry can't help you there.
Do let us know if you get Sunrise 0.42j working. Or perhaps someone using Windows can tell you how they got it to work on their box. :-)

One orher way of doing it is making sure that the java executable is in the path.
Open a command line and type 'java'. Does it give any feedback apart from 'unknown command'?

Hi:
I tried getting Sunrise .042j working on my XP Pro Windoze desktop but had no luck. Java is in the path, as I can hit start, run, java and it comes up with a prompt with all of the possible commands. I even had the java teacup/candle icon running on the tray indicating that java was running, installed and uninstalled but always got the same error. The Sunrise .042j plugin for Firefox works up to 2.0 but not with 2.004. If any of you Windoze users have any suggestions, I would be grateful.
I've had better luck with Sunrise XP. Chinese sites convert as well, given that you have CJKOS or some other Chinese Environment on your Palm. I took a couple of sites with Bios commands/Configuration stuff that I had in Adobe Acrobat Reader for the Palm and happily converted them to Sunrise/Plucker use--much faster. Plucker indeed automatically looks for documents in palm\programs\plucker on the sd card, which takes care of the storage problem.
I haven't tried any huge conversions yet. What depth and color settings do you use? Pincushion Queen, could you post a link to one of those huge textbooks you've converted? I'd like to try it for the experience. Also any websites that you had trouble converting with Sunrise XP.
I managed to delete enough applications, chiefly mobiplay, an adware newsreader, to stave off the immediate need for Launcher X but that will be my next project.
Sunrise has a lot of promise as it can be installed on all of the computers you come across and then all you have to do is use a card reader or Drive mode and put it in the plucker folder.
For those of you that haven't tried Plucker/Sunrise it's really useful having the capibility to to view any web page offline.

I still need some help with settings. Thanks.

Hey thenrik,
Glad that you've at least got SunriseXP working. Don't know what going wrong with v0.42j
Anyways, here's a link for a Biology text book that I made: http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/ It's really a decent text site if you need one for Biology - it was written by a retired Harvard professor.
I personally vary my settings somewhat depending on what I'm parsing. I usually set link depth to 3 or 4 and then "Restrict to Host". That prevents me from parsing advertisements that might be picked up. For this textbook I wanted to allow links to outside webpages for some of the articles so I set it to "Restrict to Domain" instead.
I set the output "Thousands of colors" & the size to 320 x480 max images and I check "Include full size alternate versions". That way I can see a small version of an image as I'm reading through the text but if I want to see detail, I just tap on the image and I get a blown up version (this is one of my favorite features).
I've never messed with the Content encoding, I've always just used the default settings there. I've also not needed the filters much or the advanced setting to be changed.
I would use filters if you're parsing a portion of a really large site and wanted to just limit the pathway - eg: Say I only wanted the "B" portion of the above mentioned text book then I could set up a filter for http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/B/* and that would just give me the Bs (I used an * to indicate a wildcard to grad all of the terms in B/...)
Hope this helps!!

How does the Sunrise/Plucker combination compare with iSilo?
I don't really understand this Sunrise thing... Do you need Plucker to make it work? Seems a little complicated to me.

I can't personally compare Sunrise/Plucker combo to iSilo, but I did look through the stuff on their website and it appears that they are very similar in form and function except that to get all of the style and functions that Plucker gives you for free, iSilo charges you $20. The free version of iSilo has a lot less of the exact features that make Plucker so awesome.
As for why to use Sunrise - it's really a matter of personal preference. There are 2 parts to Plucker: one part on the desktop for making the documents and the other part on the handheld for reading them. Sunrise is an alternative to the stock Plucker desktop parser (you only need one or the other). I personally just liked it's GUI and it has a plugin that will work with Mozilla/Firefox such that if you right click on a webpage you get an option to send to Sunrise --> then Sunrise will make the document as per your "Quick Document" settings.
The basic documents really aren't complicated at all - like turning a text document into a book is really easy stuff... There's just a lot of options when doing webpages or entire chunks of websites, that stuff can get complicated but only because you can tweak individual setting around to make the document exactly what you want. I haven't even played with all of the possible settings available.
However, I must in all fairness say, that if you already own a copy of iSilo then I can't off the top of my head give you a compelling reason to switch. Hope that helps :D

Sunrise is for more advanced plucker users.
Plucker teaches you how to set the dept of the download. For instance for the website slash dot(they used to have a download for plucker made every day) they have a mobile site that will give the top five comments after each topic. Dept follows links to the number of times within a link. (Very difficult to explain, it is easier to see by example)
I am not sure how to explain filtering but on 1src there are sections with ads. Supposedly a filter takes out some of the things presented on a website. One way to avoid using filters is to select the mobile edition of a website like for instance 1src:
http://www.1src.com/mobile/
I am using the sunrise version .042j and can only use sunrise with the explorer browser and not the firefox browser. When you see an article you want to send to sunrise you have to right click your mouse and press the selection "send to sunrise" if you have sucessfully downloaded and loaded sunrise.

Hi:
After Philpalm's post I decided to revisit Sunrise .42j. I'm familiar with filters and length depth as I've done a lot of offline web archiving for BBC radio and old time radio projects.
I can't get Sunrise .42j to load on my Xp Pro system at all. It won't recognize It always says it needs javarun time 1.42 or newer. I have the newest runtime, many of the old ones and reloaded 1.42 to boot but it still won't run. The mozilla plugin won't work with Firefox after version 2.0 and the send to Sunrise appears in IE when right clicking on a web page but won't send anything to Sunrise anyway.
Sunrise XP works with both Firefox and IE. While both will download 1src mobile forums, typical being about 15mb, they both come up with need to log in error messages, though I already logged in, when you try to view the file with Plucker.
I'll try .42j on my old Windows 98 laptop at work, perhaps it will work with an older OS.
Perhaps it works great on Linux all the time but on Windows some web sites work great but other don't at all.
The best I've been able to do for offline viewing 1src forums is an Avantgo Rss feed
Tom
I got mine to work with the AOL/explorer hybrid browser.

Looks like I have to figure out how to enter my password and enter into the mobile download. On Brighthand a patch was suggested:
http://www.splitbrain.org/blog/2007-03/26-a_plucker_webinterface
via :http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=257772&highlight=plucker

However if you put this website into the URL section of plucker it comes out pretty good: http://starbulletin.com/indext.html
because they need no password. Usually if you want a picture with the article Sunrise is usually the easiest method to use.

I wonder how to use sunrise when you want several pages of a forum question?
