good converting programs

I want to convert movies to make them smaller and stuff. Is there any programs out there that I can use (free) that can convert movies to different formats or maybe even change the extension (from mov to mpg for example). Thanks!

Well I found a converter (EO-video) but it is giving me errors and is really messing up.

I use VirtualDub which is very good (and free), as long as you have the codecs.
