I own a NX70V and it is definitely one of my favorite PDA's. I am confident Sony will be releasing a 400MHZ unit shortly. I also have a new Tungsten C and just want to share my intial impressions.
I just received my new Palm Tungsten C PDA. First impression -
fast, fast, fast!!!! Set-up was easy, Wi-Fi connection to the Apple
AirPort home network was a snap, and the transflective screen is
awesome, although I wish it matched the Sony's 480 X 320
resolution. Pages rendered in the web browser quickly and the
overall response to any input is almost instantaneous with the
Tungsten C. Other than the intial set-up hotsync, all other sync's
have been via Wi-Fi (same with my Clie NX70V). I only used
the built-in keyboard briefly; however, the touch was fine and the
keyboard should ultimately be a nice input device. VersaMail 2.5
performed very well. I configured 4 email accounts without any
problems and the downloads are quick with some of the best text
formatting available on a PDA email client.
I use JFile 5.50h as my prime database because its filter execution time is faster than other PDA under US$100 databases. Following are the filter execution times for a 3700+ record JFile database:
PDA Time
Palm IIIc 8 seconds
Visor Prism 8 seconds
Sony Clie NR70V 4 seconds
Palm Tungsten T 2 seconds
Sony Clie NX70V 1 second
Palm Tungsten C 1/2 second

The screen on the T|C has a kind of yellowish tint.

Or maybe we are use to the blue-ish tint on our Sonys......
Either way, both are nice screens. I did notice the colors on the T|C being a little too saturated however....
Back to topic, I made a video of T|C vs. TG50 and boy, does the T|C ever fly!

It must be nice knowing that extra memory is there, too.

People have been asking for such a device for years, your request will fall on deaf ears.

I so agree with the mp3 thing. I am still chugging along with my T615 and want to leap to something better. The TC has it all... except mp3!!! Sony, Palm - I don't really care too much who takes me there - but the move needs to be significant enough for me to be able to afford it. I've heard people ask about some kind of stereo conversion plug... Is this possible? Anyone?

Vince,
You could ad some kinda confersion plug but you would hear a mono sound in both ears. The only other way I would expect is to open the case and 'play' with the innards.
This is the only reason I have not bought a C......I too love the option of playing MP3 and I feel let down that the high spec Palm has mono output.
Sony have got to get thier finger out and produce a similiar spec device with the MP3........

How on earth Palm miss that MP3 ??? How much added cost would that be vs the potential revenue loss !!! even Palm aim the C for corporate buyer and not a multi-media machine....The C should put Palm ahead of Clie except with that mono stuff and now it let Sony a chance to kill Tungsten once and for all....What a big blunder.

Mowog,
Yeah - that's what I was afraid off. No real way to get around mono.
I guess I've got time, so I'll wait for Sony and see what they can do. Knowing Sony they won't be long!

I am really tempted to get this C. Forget about the MP3. Even if they have it, it will be phatetic. For the MP3, I will get the new IPOD or get Sony Net MD. If i were to abadon Palm OS, I will get Nokia Communicator 9210i (9290 in US). I can't wait for Sony...I have given myself enough excuse to splur my hard earned money for the newest PDA...

ive a sony md which is soo cool and quite a cheap alternative to cool music too (md media cost ~60 cents USD in japan) ive a creative mp3 player its small its accepts sd/mmc card for expansion. since i got a clie i hardly used this things anymore. i love the convenience of enjoying music while travelling and reading web clips at the same time without logging along to many device.
that said, it REALLY IS A BIG MISTAKE by palm not to include stereo jack on the tungsten c. what are they thingking? will it really cost them much to include this thing? they just blew their chance to get even with sony.

The only complain i have using the MP3 in my T665 is it suck a huge juice on the battery and I often find myself looking for my battery charger....Net MD or IPOD won't consume that much energy and I can really concerntrate using the Clie just as PDA. As a matter of fact, I used the MP3 last week for my trip and I don't have a chance to charge my battery and it leave my Clie totally dead and hence some problem occured and I need to do a hard reset.

Tungsten C is for business oriented users. If you consider getting a PDA more for entertainment then I guess you should stick to Sony... and wait for the NX replacement.

sure it is. but a little music wont hurt, will it?
sony has stole so much of palm market share with theire "personal entertainment organizer" for so long and palm had a chance to get even with tungsten c.... i as said in my previous post... they blew it.
sure sony might come up with an answer (im eagely waiting for it) but im afraid its wrapped in another brick clamshell :( i will keep my t665 for now

The Tungsten C is cool, but the lack of stereo does stink. Also, I have started to envy my husband's CDMA connectivity to the internet and e-mail via his Treo. For folks who don't have WiFi access and whose carrier does not yet provide a BlueTooth cell phone, a CDMA enabled PDA is pretty sweet. You can have your PDA apps and voice simultaneously on the Treo 300.
The Tungsten W has cellular connectivity but you need the headset for it to work as a phone, and it's not CDMA, which is the only data option I can afford. Okay, fine, I can live with the poor cell phone experience of it, as long as the data part on CDMA would be good.
So I guess I'd be looking for something that's like the Tungsten W, only CDMA, and with the Tungsten C's amazing specs, and the TG50's stereo features and one-touch voice recording via built in-mic.
Hmm...is there any way we can breed these little devices to get the features we want? I get pick of the litter! ;)
I have a feeling, for some reason, the manufacturers know what we want and just like to torture us by giving us CLOSE to what we want, but not exactly. :p

I could care less about the Palm. Too many coming on here trying to tell us how great it is :D! Nothing beats the HiRes+ screen and I could never go back to a square screen again, I'd do without it first. Color me spoiled and whatever else you'd like... :)

The biggest stink I have with the T|C is the fact you have to buy a seperate headset (the same one used for MP3 playback) to record voice memos! Palm seems to have a record of taking two steps forward, then three steps back.

I e-mailed PALM about the mono jack and this is what they replied:
"Thank you very much for your inquiry. I understand that you need a
stereo head phone for listening MP3 with both ears using your is
Palm(TM) Tungsten(TM) C handheld. Chris, the headphone jack of your Palm
Tungsten C handheld is a 2.5mm mono headphone jack. Mono sound mean it
only consists of one channel. Stereo sound consists of two channels
(left and right). In order to hear sound from both speakers in mono
sound you must purchase a compatible 2.5mm mono to stereo adapter. I
suggest that you contact a retailer or a local vendor in your city to
purchase a mono to stereo adapter."
Wouldn't this adapter just take the mono channel and times it by 2? So it still wouldn't be true stereo?

let me translate - Hi, we stuffed up and we know it. We think your a f*ckwit and think that you will do what we say and therefore purchase a T|C giving us more money. We wont tell you that it isnt really stereo as most people wont notice the difference.

You would be surprised at how many people think this solution would indeed make the unit have stereo sound through headphones.

I sense silliness here.. If most people don't discern b/w true stereo and mono coming through two channels, then the stereo issue is less of a big deal than people are making it. I consider mp3 playing on my palm a nice "extra" that comes with it, and I can fully enjoy my music with false "stereo" because I only notice the difference when I'm actually making an effort to...

I don't think too many people here are saying how great the Palm is. I think too many people are bashing its lack of stereo sound! The truth is that you should appreciate people giving kudos to Palm for the Tungsten C, because that is what our market system is driven by. The more people we have coming here praising the Tungsten C and expressing hope that Sony will meet their match, the more likely Sony will come out with a killer product as their retort...

Yeah, I understand that two mono is not that different from stereo, but at the same time, WHY could they not make this one single jack STEREO??? I think that palm needs to realize as sony did that there is a big market for gaming and media in pdas.

Exactly, and this is why SONY has the majority share.
If I spend $400 - $500 on another PDA it better halve all the bells and whistles.
Here's what I wrote to PALM if anybody is interested:
"Not a tech question, I would just like to give praise to the moron(s) that decided to ship this thing with a mono headphone jack.
Bravo!!! Wait, I mean Brvo!!! It doesn't need the "a!""

Palm devices are nice if you can put up with a small screen because it does not feel like Palm enjoys pissing off their customers.
Sony clies have nice screens and some cool features, but it upsets many people (ME!)because Sony is such a lousy, money grubbing company.
i.e. not releasing there own CF driver, what in the heck were those bozos thinking?
If palm (or any company) ever made a device with the larger screen and similar features like those found on my NX70v I would drop Sony like a 10 day old rotten sewer stank egg!!!
Sorry thats my tourette's syndrome kicking in again.
Go eruware!

This VersaMail thing sounds great. By any chance were those AOL accounts? Anyone know if VersaMail will work with AOL email?

Hi:
Configured 3 POP accounts and 1 IMAP (.mac). Do not use AOL, I'll post again if I find anything out about VersaMail with AOL.
