Have any of you tried out the new Opera Mini 4 Beta? Now do keep in mind I was never a big fan of the Picsel Browser web experience-never got used to the zooming in and out thing, but OM4B amazed me! I took a look at 1SRC and it rendered the page AS WELL AS MY DESKTOP BROWSER! This release puts all my other browsers on my palm to shame (and I have them all). I did have a few lock ups while using it, but I'm sure it will get ironed out by final release. Have any of you tried it? What do you think?

I don't think it will be ironed out in the final release, for the glitches are the fault of the IBM Java VM, and not Opera. The Java VM has been quite easy on OM2, not so easy on OM3 and as features grow, I think it will make OM4 unusable.
Also, shame on you Palm to include such a crappy browser like Blazer, and still claim at your last conference call that Palm provides the "best mobile web experience" in the industry. My ***.

I was aware that if a Java Midlet freezes, it was the fault of the JVM. This would be really bad if that was the case.

OM froze like there was no tomorrow. The smart zoom is interesting but not exactly practical (FYI blazer does it just fine in the wide page mode without freezes). If it were a native palm palm app it would be a nice browser, but in its jvm incarnation, the person using it would be a masochist (I went through 5 freezes in 10 minutes).

1SRC full site (not mobile) loaded in 10sec with OM, how long does that take with Blazer?

And one of the news sites i use didn't load at all... Myspace and PalmZ.in both freeze on login attempt. Inadequate to say the least
At least Blazer loads most of the pages out there (even though it does run out of memory on PalmAddict - that site is huge....so only about half of images come through. oh wait OM freezes on that one as well)

Yes I know it sucks that OM freezes, but then again it is not a OM problem, it is a JVM problem. If there was a real JVM for Palm (something from Sun and not IBM) then I could see OM replacing Blazer altogether, but that's never going to happen. I think that that if OM was as stable as Blazer (not that it is a rock or anything, crashes my plam if I launch it with WiFi connected) it would be a much better browser. Do you not agree?

I have just tried out OM4 and WOW, it's looking great. Just iron out all the freezes, and verious other boogers and it is great. I did not get the chance, but can it handle downloads yet?
"then I could see OM replacing Blazer altogether, but that's never going to happen." remeber that palm and Opera are working together on a foleo browser? So, maybe a standalone palmos one is in the works?

I wasn't talking about a palm os version I was talking about a better JVM (which would make OM better), sorry if I didn't make myself clear :) But if Opera made a palm os version for my TX that would be awsome!

I know what you meant. what I was saying is that hey, they are working on a foleo one, maybe a standalone palmos app is onthe way since the are working together.
And, yeah, we need a better VM, too :D

BTW it CAN handle downloads, at least on my TX.
Yup. Looks great on the TH55/E and the LifeDrive :)

I don't like installing java...I'm sticking with PB and netfront for TH and blazer for treo. Sounds like with all the lockups, I spared myself a headache >.<

Hey LV, don't bother installing the JVM just for this app, because it's pretty unusable on my TX. If it were stable on palm devices, it would make NF/PB and any other browser look like toys. It renders the pages just like my PC with Firefox! I'm just making myself madder, us Palm users never get anything good.

hmmm, i have OP3 and its stable, ill try OP4 later since im on BLAZER right now. to tell you the truth guys, blazers is quite good. I have no crashes at all; im even able to use it in Warm Reset Mode!!! Yes u read right, warm reset. Dont ask me how but it connects to the internet (and is the only app to do so in WRM) eventhough the wifi symbol is not in the statusbar. And is WAY WAY WAY faster than anything else in...

I agree, and have said so in previous posts Blazer is the best browser available, but that was then. OM4 is the new best browser IF it was stable on the palm. You don't know how good it is until you see it in action. I believe it's faster than IE on my desktop (but not Firefox).

As I said before, it would be great IF it were a native palm app but as a midlet its too unstable to be a viable option.
Yep, also it can't be your default browser so it has limited integration with the system.
But I would be jumping for joy if I was still using a SE phone, this is a big advance for phone browsers.

I have no problem with blazer, the only problem is that blazer always receive the mobile version of the website when available, which is, quite useless at some websites. thats where opera mini comes into play.
So far the only problems I have with opera mini4 beta are
1. it forgets cookies very soon, need to repeat logging in
2. crash from time to time
3. under full page view, all fonts are lines
4. have problem interacting with input areas in the webpages.
