count em up, feel alive
pretty pic, I earned it too

post counts grow far too fast
Suddenly you're no longer last
reply to two in one message true
write less, type only a few
to keep from being number one

Only in my spare time :) I am actually a computer programmer first and foremost, we're an excentric bunch. :) I chose poetry for my eccentricity. :)

i'm thinking about going into programming. What book should i buy. I dont have a clue what to start with.

SamuraiCatJB
01-24-2003, 08:55 PM
that is the worlds second largest open ended question.... why do you want to program? for what machines? and do you have an idea of what language? Java is the language of choice most of the time now as you can use it in webpages or as a local application on most machines.... there are lots of intro books available, not sure which is best.... I program in C/C++ and translate modules from everything known to man.... :)

I am no expert, but based on what you just wrote, you have a lot of books to read and a long way to go! I am not trying to insult you, as I am the furthest thing from being a programmer, but I just found your reply funny! Good luck and best wishes!

Well once you hit 100... below the page where you select your avatar, a "Custom Avatar" table appears where you can select an image from your hard drive to have as an avatar.

I appologize for going over your head. :) bad habit of dealing with only computers most of the time. :)

If you want to write games, most are written in a language called C or C++. Some are written in other languages. C and C++ are not good languages to start with, though C++ is better than C to try to learn.

You will find all kinds of books at the stores, including a Game Intro book with a free version of Microsoft C++. If you want a start, that is a good one. The free compiler will not let you distribute executables, but once you have learned you have an excuse to get the real thing. :)

I still think they should make the posts count as some sort of "Level" in a Cliesource RPG.

You should get certain things at 1000 and 2500 and what not...

JenixSJ30,

Your photo has to be within the size limitations. Without going to look, it's something like 80x120 or 120x80 pixels. So you will have to find something within that or use a photo editing tool that will do it.

In fun, why do you want to become a programmer? Most programmers I know pass you in the hallway sliding down the wall with their backs to you so they don't have to say "hi!" :D Don't know what it is about years of programming, but there is danger in becoming socially disfunctional! :) Just poking a little fun here, but there really do seem to be a lot of programmers that fit that description. My advice, stay sane, become a professional ClieSource contributer! :D

thanks for the tip. It is my dream to make my own game. Its just an idea. I have always loved computers. I'm not a geek or anything i'm on a soccer team to. Most people dont know i cna even type or turn on a computer. its a image i try to keep. But little do they know that i know more about computers than they ever will kno. Well anyways does Bill Gates ever pass you in the hall?

Actually, I just bow my head and slouch. :)

Seriously, I started giving speeches three years ago, forced communication keeps me from ending up in that hallway scenerio. ;) :p

But it is easier not to talk... I don't like lying, and most people don't want the truth when they ask about your day. :) Now I don't mind anymore. :)

Hey T, diggin the bald.

I took a C++ course at my high school, but the teacher was learning it as he taught it to us. I didn't learn much, but I can understand some of the basic structure of the language. I may enroll in some computer science courses at NCSU, but I don't intend to make a major out of it.

As far as programing a game... That is a great goal, but don't expect your first compiled program to be Half-Life. I never got passed text based programs in my 18 week course. There is so much to learn it can be overwhelming if you are expecting to be pushing QuakeIII level games out of the door in your first month of study. Stick with it though, and you will have a blast.

So what kind of RPG level do we hit at 1000 posts?

JenixSJ30,

Until you get 100 post on ClieSource to be able to upload your avatar you can just create a signature with your custom image.
That's one way around it.

Try www.gifworks.com and set up an avatar from there and download to your hard disk. Good luck.
