On my clie, I can play normal MP3's on any type of memory stick. The Magicgate stick is for a special Sony music format called ATRAC3 or something like that.
You don't need magicgate at all. On the TG50, I think you may have to encode your MP3s in a certain way, but I'm not sure how.

Magic Gate MS is a type of MS that is required to use Sony's ATRAC3 audio format. ATRAC3 is a copyright protected audio format that sounds slightly better than mp3. MagicGate MS can also take mp3 as well...

I can second that. I can play mp3s with my blue sony 16, lexmark 64, sandisk 128 MS and with my 512 MS pro. No problems. Every stick works... Just copy the mp3 using MS Import in the MSAUDIO folder and be sure that the bitrate is supported (have a look in the manual) and that it is not VBR.

ATRAC3 also has better compression that mp3, so it takes up less space on your shtick!

*Basically, every sony MS slot reads the normal MS, only some lastest launched (higher end) products acccept Memory Stick PRO
* Some products in some categories will be able to accept Memory Stick PRO media by upgrading firmware or software. (Available advantage is high capacity only.)
