How often do you re-install all your apps? Sort of like a format and re-install on your computer?
Right now my Clie is getting a bit buggy and I sometimes get errors. I was thinking about doing a hard reset and installing each app again.

twice a day, at most. i prefer a hard reset instead normally.

Not to often..
Actually after I got my memory upgrade I did not do it for a long time...up until next memory upgrade in six months ...

I wouldn't choose to do it intentionally unless the system became really unstable, but I have had to do it twice in 2 years.
The good thing was that I freed up over 1 MB each time after reloading everything (fragmentation?).
I'm thinking of doing it again intentionally just to see if I can get some memory freed up.

I haven't had to do it since I bought my T665. I've noticed that although I use it enough to almost completely run down the battery most days, I only get a soft reset problem once or twice a month maybe.
I've deleted a lot of trial software from my device, and apparently some leave crap lying around, but it hasn't become a big issue for me. I think I've found most of it by poking around in MS Gate.
I HAVE considered it, just to see how much would be freed up, but I suspect not TOO much... I AM curious though.

I just did it last week. All my problems are gone. No more crashes and it seems to run quicker too. I would highly recommend doing it.

I did it a couple of weeks ago. I about doubled the amount of free space left on my Clie.

Are you talking about doing a hard reset and then manually installing all your programs? If so, how do you know which files to reload? For instance...to make sure you get all your addresses and appointments in Agendus?

It's best to be pretty careful about this, you need some preference and data base files, but you want to get rid of the stranded ones.
I printed out a report from Filez (saved to wordsmith then synced and printed from the desktop), that listed the type, creator, size, etc.
Using the files in my BackupBuddy archive, I matched up db's to their ap's (using Creator IDs as clues), and loaded a little at a time to see how it went.

Just use Cleanup...carefully. It comes with UnInstall Hack.

I haven't done this since early in my Palm Vx days. BackupBuddy covers me nicely if the very rare hard reset is required.

I am going to do it this weekend when I have the time.
Step 1. Write down all programs
Step 2. Go through sony dir on computer and move all backup and update folders
Step 3. Hard reset
Step 4. Sync (only Addy, To Do, Memo, and Date should sync)
Step 5. Update Sony software
Step 6. Install 3rd party software
I think it'll prob. take me about 1 hour...but I should be able to clear out some problems I am having.

Use MyPalm (http://dpug.org/join/mypalm.asp) (freeware) to record the apps on your device. It saves the list to a memo which you can Hotsync and print if desired.

I re-installed everything last night. I wish I could say that it wasn't painless, but I did get through it. Here is how I did it (be it right or wrong, I am up and running now):
Write down each category and all the apps in each.
Do a fresh backup on the MS. (Then I removed the card.)
Hard reset my Clie. (I didn't do anything with my programs in ROM.)
Move the "Sony Handheld" folder on my laptop and rename it.
Uninstall my Palm desktop and reinstall it.
HotSync.
Put my MS card back in and start installing the apps I want to restore, including the databases, preferences, etc. (I use BackupMan.)
Open the renamed "Sony Handheld" folder and find the address, memo, datebook and todo folders and copy the contents of each to the newly created corresponding folders in the new "Sony Handheld" folder.
Configure my WiFi settings.
Re-install all conduits (Clie Mail, etc.)
HotSync again.
I believe that is all I did. Now for the good news. I saved 2.2MB of RAM :D

Since I have 9 megs free RAM, it's running superbly, no fatals or resets, why fix it :)?

I usually only do a fresh re-install when I get a new device, which is now looking to be about once a year. otherwise, I only hard reset when I have to and then I just restore from a card backup.
One of the benefits would be to recover RAM from files that are no longer used but after going back recently to see about how much I would recover, I found only 125KB so I didn't think it was necessary.

so far I've been lucky......Visor to S360 to SJ30....and no hard resets or resintalls. I do have zlauncher and go through the file manager looking for orphaned files to delete.

I do it every couple of months. I'm always amazed at what I get back. I did it a couple weeks ago . . . I even cleared my card & JackFlash and re-installed EVERYTHING!
I ususally get an extra 2MB or so of ram back extra . . . not sure why, but hey, it's worth the agony . . . ;)

I guess the 2mb would be from not reinstalling "dumb"/"unused" stuff you didn't realise you had on your clie in the first place.

I have not had to reinstall since getting the NX last year - have about 6.5 Mb RAM still free. I will test the process soon and also backups work OK

This is an interesting and yet puzzling thread as I've read through it. I would guess ... those who have responded in here .... also reformat/reinstall their computers on a frequent basis as well.
I really don't see the need to hard-reset, or I've just not come across a situation having to do so as of yet. OK... that isn't true. Each time I've sold my PDA or given one away ... I've done a hard reset ... only because it is the easiest way to clear all data.
I've been a PDA Owner for several years ... and I can't say .... that I've had to hard-reset ever ... due to performance problems.
I've done some soft-resets (last one about 3 weeks ago ....was because the Video-Recorder in my NZ wasn't working .... soft-reset cleared it right up) but not warm...nor hard resets.
I certainly wouldn't want to give anyone an impression... that Hard Resets are 'no big deal'. Sucks to have to reload everything.

Agree with you - that's why not done a hard reset. However, I will test the process to recover in case I ever need to restore from my backups. Apart from that I would not do a hard reset - having to reinstall all apls every few weeks would be a real 'hassle'

I had to do a hard reset just this morning. Right now I am down to having to do a hard reset once a month. But that's better than when I first got my NR70V. I found that YiShow and Planetarium were the biggest causes of my problems.

Amen to that. I've never hard reset mine and I've been using them for several years too. I wouldn't want to go through the hassle. Of course, I don't clean out my sock drawer either...

i play around with too much new software and it crashes it so that my only option is a hard reset... happens about once a week. Reinstalling everything is crappy, so I normally try to test a bunch of new software all in one day.

Ive done this a couple of times in the past including when i got my NR-70.
Now though i have so many programs it would be kind of dificult. Lets see 1,2,3,4..........249,250. So thats 250 apps =all of my hacks thats...25 hacks=all my ebooks. I f i did it now it would take forever but i am currently working on it and will tell you all when i am finally done.

I did a hard reset earlier today after coming across this thread. I have never done it before. Everything has been working fine on my NZ but I was curious.
I had 5mb free before I started and after re-installing everything one at a time I have 6mb free now. I didn't bother with messing with Jackflash. Overall I think it was worth it.:)

Okay i lied! Ive just spent the last long while sorting my "Downloads" folder which contains all my palm stuff. Including butn not limited to:songs, skins programs, movies, etc.
This downloads folder before i started was 11.2 GB (yes thats GB) and now its 1.97 GB. Thats a lot of extra crap i got rid of, lots of duplicate files in diferent foloders and stuff. I reorganized all the files into a more sensible and understandable set of folders. I have one folder now for all of my palm program downloads, One for digital media (with sub folders for books, skins, songs, movies) one for a back of my cards and an emergency backup of my desktop folder (you could say sometimes i get paranoid with computers, you cant trust em), and last but not least a folder for desktop programs (not palm related of corse!). So this is what i have been doing al night and a good thing to, after all i did lose almost 10GB of ugly crap!!
I will probably work on my PDA tomorrow or the next.

Sorry for the multiple post this is kind of an after thought.
I loaded Mypalm a minute ago and ran it. Only problem is it dosent read the car launcher folder. Now this is a real problem since i have close to 200 or more programs on my card(Yes i am a packrat and yes thay are almost all games!) So i guess that means back to square one unless anyone else nows of a similair program!

I tried CleanUP but was not too happy with it. It considers the DateBk5 preferences as orphaned files as I had to find out after deleteing them via CleanUp! Good idea but use with caution! Now use Uninstall but still leaves the odd orphened fil here and there!

that should read orphaned and file. Sorry!

No re-install yet.
But I am seriously thinking about it as I have tried sooo many programs when I got my NX60. There must loads of trash on my NX now. I am still hesitating to re-install as I do not yet know which would be the easiest/most convenient way to re-install all needed applications without losing any data and cleaning up the data garbage.

I use the POSE (Palm OS emulator) to test 95% of the software on the PC first.... most of the tested apps (and orphan problems) never make it to the Clie.
Actuall I have not done this ever on purpose. I watch carefully with both Uninstall Manager, CleanUp and my file managers what is installed and what needs to go.

I guess that I am the only one who memorizes what's in memory. Anytime I add a new app, I keep a mental picture of it. Using the delete in the default launcher has worked fairly well for me. If I find something strange, then I look at the creator ID. I do things similar with the desktop PC too. Most cleanup apps leave a lot to be desired. So, I am left to take care of it myself, but I don't profess to be perfect. It does keep things running pretty smoothly :).

How often do I clear everything out and reload it?
About twice a year, either in response to something I did that messed things up or because I got bored with the configuration adn wanted to try something different.
Last night, I got a MemoryMgr,C.Line43something error that drove me bonkers. Tried reloads, but various things I had done were tripping over each other and complicated the whole mess. Even venerable Backup Buddy failed me for various reasons.
Today, things are working fine after several re-loads and much tinkering... but...
I am now thinking about tearing it down again and rebuilding from scratch- newly downloaded/upgraded programs, thinking about each app and my history with it, etc.
Heck, I am even thinking about some sort of log (something I can hotsync and keep on my PDA and computer) with each program, version date, associated files, and usage notes.
I DO have to admit that I often need to reset my PDA and computer, but then again, I must also admit that I keep tinkering with them- adding programs, deleting programs, leaving lots of garbage in the wake, etc.

I am currently on vacation and had to do a hard reset and restore from MS Backup. The only problem I had was that I lost my icon set. It just disappeared. The only thing I can think of was that it was stored on the card when I did my last backup and I had since moved it to main memory. This really stinks because my icon set was heavily customized from the original M3 set and it will take forever to recreate the icon set for Datebk5 to line up right again. Oh well, at least I learned a lesson... always keep a separate backup of this file on my PC so I don't have to go through it again! I can't wait to get home from my vacation now (I can't believe I'm saying this!) so I can get my NX70V back to full working condition!

Not since I bought my NR70V last September. Very stable, in spite of running a lot of sotware in RAM and from the MS.
