After getting error messages every time I used Mapopolis, I hard reset my T/X and lost Mapopolis. I went to their website and found that they no longer sell to consumers. Does anyone know of a replacement that matches or exceeds Mapopolis?

I got all the maps for my entire state before my subscription expired.

I wonder what happened?

I guess I too will have to find a substitute. Frankly, I never saw the need for a $300 or $600 GPS unit when I could get Mapopolis to work with my tx for only $30.

Boy, this is a big disappointment.

Google Maps is so much better than Mapopolis, as long as you have a BT cell and a data plan. It's brilliant.

Tomtom's Navigator software is excellent!

tt is good but expensive and like mapoplolis stores data in an sd card - hence work offline.

google maps is very good online but does not support 480 x 320.

K maps does go full screen if you got java web sphere. But at the moment im getting java lang error!

There are several pograms from pocketgpsworld.com , importing your own maps is not a bad option at all and free.

braj,
If I need a BT cell for Google Maps, I don't want or need the extra cumber or an on-line service. I don't know what is meant by a data plan.

The Palmster,
Does Tomtom's navigator software work independently of GPS? All I need is turn-by-turn directions. You know--enter the starting and ending addresses and it generates a list of streets, turns and distances between them.

I work in Public Safety, and Palm's interface was quick and the maps were pretty accurate. I had hoped to find software that was compatible without breaking the bank. My truck has a GPS unit but the clunky interface takes ten times the amount of time to use. Another consideration is that I'm out here in the boonies and some software doesn't carry my county.

Yes. It has a feature called "Advanced Planning" that can be used without GPS. It will give you the ability to browse the planned route by text, by map and by images. In fact, it even has a Route Demo feature which allows you to see the entire route as if you were travelling it via GPS.

TT is definitely one of my favourite programs.

If that is all you want, then I suggest the new DeLorme Street Atlas 2008, which comes with the software for the Palm. The HandHeld version, as I said is included, and it can be used with or without a GPS attached. You also get the PC desktop/laptop software. Both the HandHeld and PC versions will do routing, and with much better user control than Mapopolis did on the Palm, and both will generate great looking maps and directions. You can export the routes and maps from the PC version to your Palm, or generate routes directly on your Palm. It sells for about $40 so it doesn't break the bank.

Street Atlas HandHeld was never as good at GPS realtime navigation as Mapopolis, but for what you want it is a great inexpensive option.

Does anyone know of a replacement that matches or exceeds Mapopolis? You can check out the following folder on your computer to see if you have a backup of the Mapopolis files. This assumes you HotSynced the files to you Palm.

C:\Program Files\Palm\DeviceID\Backup

Where DeviceID is the name assigned to your Palm when you installed the HotSync program.

BTW: Always keep a backup of installed files in case of a hard reset.

iboar,
Thanks for the info. Tomtom is $100 and seems overpriced compared to Delorme. I'm off to the Delorme site to see what's available.

C:\Program Files\Palm\DeviceID\Backup

Where DeviceID is the name assigned to your Palm when you installed the HotSync program.
Where DeviceID is a shortened version of the Hotsync name assigned to your Palm. Example: If your device is called "John Smith", then the shortened version might be "SmithJ". It is my current understanding that the shortened version is generated from the full version by:
If the Hotsync ID has two or more words, take the first six characters of the second word followed by the first character of the first word. Examples:
"John Smith" becomes "SmithJ"
"James Johnson Smith" becomes "JohnsoJ"
"Jane Q Doe" becomes "QJ"
If the Hotsync ID has only one word, take the first six characters of that word. Examples:
"PDAMaster" becomes "PDAMas"
"John" becomes "John"
If there already exists a directory with that name, appends a number to the end of the name to make it unique, starting with 0. Examples:
"John Doe" and "Jane Doe" both sync against the same desktop, John's was synced first. Therefore the data directory for "John Doe" would be "DoeJ" and the data directory for "Jane Doe" would be "DoeJ0".
Later their son starts syncing a new device to the same desktop. If this new device was named "James Doe" it would use the data directory "DoeJ1".

Also, check C:\Program Files\Palm\DeviceID\Archive

Earthcomber is a free alternative you might consider at www.earthcomber.com. You can download maps by state/county and store them on an sd card. You can search for addresses and it covers everywhere.

While they don't still sell to consumers, the latest version of the Mapopolis Navigator application is still available (http://www.mapopolis.com/nav.zip) for free download. {Prof. Jonathan}

Here's a question:
How many of the above carry non-US maps?
Here's the ones that I know do:
GoogleMaps (and by extension, KMaps)
TomTom

Any others?

I still have Mapopolis. I still have the demo map I downloaded, which shows it has expired. What I'm not able to get is the unlocked map I used. Delorme seems to be the solution to my problem. Thanks for the input!
