Yeah ... It's a wonderfull machine ... but not perfectly easy to dominate ... it takes time to use it at its full potential.
Lupe where are you from ?

maybe you could save it by:
- not taking any of these morning coffees.
- selling one of these useless treos...
- stop smoking, if applicable
- stop taking your car and start biking
- start a low-cost food diet
- whatever else you can think of...

Pity for you because the VZ is a very special machine.
Note, maybe you would not like it ... it's thick heavy, not so good for video, no Bluetooth ... Wifi doesn't accept WPA protection ... HHE is slow on non optimized softwares ...
But battery life is wonderfull (About 30h music with the built-in player, more than 10 hours video at minimum light). Screen is to die for (viewing angle is perfect, no limit, colors as vivid as on a plasma screen), the sound is very very good, a lot better thant on iPods ... Clié Organizer is a must have ...
Maybe you could get a part time job or kill some old lady to get her money ?

Well don't dream too much ...
VZ battery life is just e little bit less than twice the TH ...
But TH battery life is already very good, no ?
LupeValenz
06-07-2007, 05:48 PM
Yeah, thats right, the TH is very nice battery life, I shouldn't stress out on it because I hardly ever run out of battery life ....ok I'm back in the real world now. I really don't need the VZ battery life because I doubt I'll use it al at once , I always like to recharge my device nightly. -that should keep my VZ desires down lol-

Yes ... but what about the VZ wonderfull, amazing, lovely, eye caching OLED marvelous screen ???
Don't you neeeeeeeeed iiiiiiit ????
Before anyone start arguing about this post of mine, please note that all I am saying are just my personal thoughts about VZ90, I know everyone have their own point of view, and I respect that, so I hope everyone would respect my own point of view too, please don't start a flame war here, because it's not what I intend to do, thank you :)
After receiving my VZ90, I am very disappointed about the CPU, if they give it a 480x320 screen they should at the very least give a CPU that can run 480x320 video smoothly (I know there's Media Launcher or FMP, but even these can't run 480x320 videos that smoothly when it comes to a certain videos that have fast moving shots), so I am forced to scale down to 384x256 with fps at 17.6823 if I want to be able to play those videos without those "lag".
SONY said VZ90 is suppose to be a Multimedia Device rather than a typical PDA, personally for me, I'd think a Multimedia Device should come with better CPU, least 200Mhz~250Mhz least.
I know I could use 360x240 but it's just not acceptable because of the color difference when using TCPMP, even with dither color turned on the color difference is still very visible and annoying, while 384x256 makes it look a bit sharper and with the color difference less "annoying", using 17.6823 fps to make VZ90 being able to play video with fast moving shots with dither color turned on while the the screen movements are still acceptable ang not that "laggy" (once fps goes lower than 16, the lag is rather noticeable and unacceptable for me).
I am, however, very happy with the OLED screen, it's just too wonderful compare to NX80V screen, it managed to play NES games smoothly without any lag with LJP, while SNES is totally out of the question, GB games is lagging (but playable for something like Pokemon Yellow, RPG games) which is funny because I thought it doesn't require too much CPU power.
In case any of you guys are interested, here's my settings for PocketDivXEncoder 0.3.96 (Note that this version can't seem to encode DVD subtitles for some reason, I use 0.3.60 for DVD video if I want subtitles)
=============
Video Quality: 13
Audio Quality: 1 22050Hz 24Kbps Mono
Brightness: 0%
Saturation: 0%
Sound: 0%
Output dimensions: 384x256
Advanced Options:
Use 2-Pass Encoding
B-Frames
FPS: 17.6823
IVTC
XviD
I get good results with these settings, especially for videos with fast moving shots (mostly anime), note some anime with "really" fast shots it still lag, some I don't care because lag is unnoticeable or acceptable, some are too bag then I reduce more quality.
I'd appreciate if someone has better ways of playing video files with resolution bigger and fast moving shots and still able to play rather "unnoticeable" smoothly.
Overall, I still love VZ90 for the OLED screen, it's just perfect, I also love the battery life and the built in wifi, hate the weak CPU though, to think that with GE2D support, at 250Mhz~300Mhz it should be able to match 400Mhz Intel PXA CPU performence for video playback, in any case, I love it, and I'll continue to use both NX80V and VZ90 depending on my mood :P

Semi,
Nobody is supposed to argue with you here 1src is a good place you will not be bashed to give your opinion.
I agree with you. VZ90 is not so good for videos.
Especially when you watch movies with subtitles, you need the 480x320 resolution !

Do you use the TCPMP and the HHE plugin? It does a pretty decent job running full scren video (at least on my TH55), it only slows down on big action sequences like in 'Hero' the forest scene with all the flowers flying around.

Lupe, Are your videos encoded in 480x320 ???
For me it seems pretty impossible to have good video quality/smoothness in this resolution. But no problem in 320x240 ...
I've tried it on the 3 modesl based on HHE (UX50/TH55/VZ90) and none was good enough.

Can't...think of screen....music player! Screen will be off, won't see it...resist temptation! >.<
Yes ... BUT ...
TH55 doesn't have the remote.
VZ90 have it.
It's sooooooo convenient. Actually, it's the same remote than the NX series, but in black ...
Lupe, yes, I am using the HHE plugin :) but you'd be surprised how much frames it'll skip if I use 480x320, I don't know what kind of encoding you do, if you can play 480x320 vidoes smoothly most the time, mind sharing your secret with me? :D

I'll have to get back with that, I forgot what the videos were encoded at, I do'nt think it was at 480x320, think somewhere around 480x270...something. Mostly been playing videos on my treo so I had to make the videos smaller to watch since it doesn't skip on the Treo >.<.

Not a problem, when I finish converting a file I'll see what the specs where when I used them (went treo format to watch movies on there, high action sequences doesn't skip on that ^.^)

Hiya (^.^)/ ....errr..hmm. My mistake, it seems that I always had TCPMP to default for full screen and so I always thought my movies was conerted to full screen format..Totololo was right, the video formats were at 320x240.
(-_-)' I tried the 384x320 (closest possible I can get to full screen) and it was a painful sight to see Iria skipping egh.:( Sorry if I killed off any hopes.

Hahaha !
I knew it.
On my mac, i use these setings to get quite good quality full resolution videos on the VZ :
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127610&page=2
4th post from the top.
Lupe, you actually meant 384x320 or you mean 384x256, if it's 384x320 of course it'll skip tons and tons of frames :\
The only reason I choose 384x256 over 360x240 is because the color difference (like... from dark red to light red during a video play), 360x240 even with dither color turned on it's too obvious, while 384x256 it's more acceptable for me, not to mention the video looks sharper too (in a way it looks closer to what 480x320 would look like, of course, less sharper.), I am not too sure on how to explain it, just do a random encode yourself with both 360x240 and 384x256 and compare it on VZ90, I think it's about looking more like.... film? anyway ~___________~;;
For videos like 640x480 I tend to strech it to 384x256 to make it full screen (since the radio still seems acceptable for me after the encode), for the videos that are wide screen already I'll keep the ratio by letting PocketDivXEncoder automaticlly adjust the height while I change width to 384x256.
For fps, you can increase the fps for "real life" videos if you don't like the frame skip (if you don't mind encoding again and again that is...), anime (cartoon type) fps at 17.6823 seems acceptable for me.
I am going to try increasing the fps for some of my videos, it is a pain to wait for the PC to encode but worth it.
Thanks anyway Lupe :D
Lupe: I've encoded the video once again with 384x256 @ 19.980 fps, I encoded it from Star Trek DVD, which so far there's no skipping happening (usually it'll skip at the opening theme where there's a scene that the screen pulls up through a planet's ring, still there's noticeable "skip" due to the fps, you can try 19.4805 though, might make it look less "skip")

Thanks for the tip :). I'd use this but video sucks the life out of my TH :(. So far it is ok for listening to music and my journal. My treo is my lil video iPod and had lil battery test at work, was able to play videos for 5:15 so that's better than less than 45 mins on my th :(
Oh, ok, sorry, didn't realize you're usint TH55 and not VZ90 (should have known by your signature thing lol...)
On my NX80V, with CPU overclocked to 400Mhz to play videos, lowest brightness can last 2 hours exactly, and max brightness can last 1 hour exactly, and the battery used by NX80V is 1200mah, I love NX80V, but I am disappointed about its screen after seeing VZ90's..... lol

06-13-2007, 06:03 PM
Hahaha ... NX80V is one of the best machine ever ever made. I would really love to have again a NX80V ... do you want to exchange with a TH55 ?
NX80V screen is a looooooooot better than the awfull TX's screen.
So could you imagine to compare TX and VZ from the point of view of screen ?
When i had this machine, i didn't overclock soooo much for 480x320 videos at 30 fps. 266 MHz were really enough, sparing a significant battery time ...
Back to the VZ topic :
I finally found satisfying videos settings in FULL SCREEN NATIVE RESOLUTION :
-------------------------------------------------------
MPEG1 (yesss, it's a looot easier to decode !)
480x272 for 16/9 movies
24 fps
1 pass
400 kbps video bitrate
MP3 audio
22KHz
64 kbps
maximum encoding quality
--------------------------------------------------------
with this setting, no framedrop, smooth video, not too much compression artifacts ... AND it leaves enough power for enabling color dithering in TCPMP.
On my mac, I use VisualHub to encode ...

Not so big ! 90 Mo for 25 minutes ... About 200 Mo for one hour ... on a VZ, you can have 2 cards (CF+MS) ... quite some gigas ...
LupeValenz
06-13-2007, 08:06 PM
I forgot about that (>.<), in that case that is purty cool right there ^.^ I would make one card dedicated just for videos and other card anything else lol.
totololo: Any chance you could upload a short video that's about a few minutes onto badongo.com so I can try your video on my VZ90? :D I want to see how well it would turn out, I suppose I could do it myself but I need to find a program to do just that, since PocketDivXEncoder doesn't convert videos into MPEG1.

MPEG1 gave me very good results on movies, but not so wonderfull on anime, with a lot of movement ... so, for anime i make divX at half fps (12 fps for 24fps original video or 15 fps for a video at 30 fps) ... anyway, very often animation is already in a low fps, so i notice practically no loss in quality / smoothness ...
