I was wondering.......
Palm in the past released upgrades of their Palm OS 4.0 and called it Palm OS 4.1
If Palm upgrades their latest Palm OS will we be able to upgrade our Clie via some type of installation disk or download?
I mean we dont buy new PC's because a new Windows OS has come out (well actually not all the time) so why should we buy new Clie's?

Let me tell you what, I literally will eat my shorts is Sony comes out with an upgrade. Sony has only done it one time for the N710 to N760 upgrade.

Each manufactuer makes their own changes to stuff in the OS, unlike on a desktop computer. If there were to be any updates released, they would have to come directly from Sony.

hmmm...
what about minor updates that affect only the generic palm os side of things?
has there been anything like that before?
what about from palm direct?

Clean shorts of course :D!
Updates will only come Sony, not Palm, reason is Sony has it's own special version. Handspring was the same way. Sony also does it with it's PC's on certain Windows Upgrades.

n2ifp is absolutely right. I read that Sony's version of Palm OS is different because of the difference in architecture to Palms PDA's. This is the same reason we can't use some of the applications that are on the Tungsten.

It would be a snap for them to release ROM updates though, but that does'nt get you buying new Clie's.

maybe not. But it develops alot of customer loyalty. Customer loyalty = long term customer.
look at macs - really. They are all proprietary upgrades. Yet as apple releases them they have such customer loyalty that mac users like myself, go into bat for them even when they are severly outclassed. We also are almost guarenteed to buy them again and tell other people how good they are. It makes them do the customer making - apple spends very little on advertising, yet made a profit in 2002. One of only two computer harware companies - Dell being the other.
If sony could do the same with its known name and media coverage capability - think about the market then - we could probably wipe palm of the face of the earth.
Not to mention that nearly everyone has something sony in their house - even if it is a tape walkman ...

It would be nice to get new roms from Sony, but with the advent of JackFlash and Sony's choices of issuing updated software for RAM the boundaries get really blurred.

I do agree with your statement tho . . . I seriously doubt Sony has any reason to encourage people to keep their old PDAs by offering upgrades. Selling new models is SO much more profitable.
